Creatinine Serum
Updatedmy creatinine has always been normal. The result from 7/1/09 was 1.14. I am a type 2 diabetic with mild-mod hypertension. I take metformin 1000 twice daily, byetta 10 mcg twice daily, diovan 160/12.5 in the am and diovan 80 mg at night. I am really concerned about this sudden rise in my creatinine. Over the past year my levels ranged from 0.7 at the lowest to 0.83 at the highest - and now this reading. I had the study repeated this morning and am waiting for the results. About 1-2 months ago, my BP increased to 160-170's systolic and I was also started on Bystolic 2.5 mg. My pressure has since returned to normal since I stopped using Aleve. I now no longer have to take the Bystolic. The Dr wants me to do a 24 creatinine clearance. I'm really scared that this could be something serious. Do I really have something worry about? I am a 61 year old white female, obese at 229.6 (I've lost about 35/36 lbs and still losing). I try to exercise at the gym at least 3 times a week, and try to walk on days I don't go to the gym.

Creatinine actually shows kidney function. Your number is higher than normal PROBABLY ( and I say probably because I am a nurse & not a doc but your doc is doing the right thing by you) because of the metformin. I have seen a creatinine level as high as 7.0 and 10.0 is usually where dialysis starts. That was my experience with one patient and although he was 7 we caught it and saved him from dialysis by referring to the proper specialist. Your doctor seems to know what steps to take so pleases don't worry. Metformin causes a rise in serum creatinine and your level is consistent with what I have seen with long term use. You seem to be in great hands with a doctor who knows what he/she is doing!
What is meant by high urine creatine level? Tell me about function of kidney if urine creatine level is 224 mg/dl.
Most blood pressure medications can also affect kidney function, I know my cardiologist makes sure to check mine every so often, to be safe.
According to FDA reports, an elevated level could indicate decreased kidney function, or kidney failure.
How are you all doing, now? Has anything changed?
