Can You Get Addicted To Meloxicam

I've taken 15mg of meloxicam for years for joint pain. I can tell a big difference when I have to stop taking it for medical procedures. Is there a risk in use for years and is it addictive? My doctors office called today to reduce to 7.5mg daily.

The FDA classifies this medication as a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory, so no, it's not addictive in the same sense that an opiate can be, but your body does get used to anything you take on a regular basis for a long period of time and suddenly stopping it will be noticeable and may result in some minor withdrawal effects, such as aches, pain, headaches and diarrhea.

As to risks with long-term use, yes, there are some, such as stomach ulceration and liver damage, or failure.

I took meloxicam for years. My doctor took me off of them because they were effecting my kidneys. I now have only 40% of kidney function. Even though thy were the best medication for my osteoarthristis , I wished I had known about its side effects sooner.
