Bad Reaction From Xyzal

I took Xyzal on April 20th and April 21st 2009 for seasonal allergies. I only took 2 5mg tablets and ended up in the hospital. I had hallucinations for 5 days. It was like being on LSD. I lost a weeks pay and put my family through alot. I am now going to see a phychiarist to deal with this. It affected me so much that they put me on Zoloft. I also contacted the FDA and reported this. I am currently seeing a new doctor and he has never heard of Xyzal. Has anybody else using Xyzal had a bad reaction?

Zyzal contains the active ingredient Levocetirizine, and yes, while it is not considered a common side effect, the FDA does warn that it has been known to cause hallucinations in some people that take it, along with visual disturbances, drowsiness, and dry mouth. NDC code: 28877-0070

I am very sorry about what happened to you and that you are still dealing with ongoing issues over it, that had to be terrifying.

I have never taken this medication, so I can't say that I had any reactions to it, but I am very well known for reacting badly to A LOT of medications, so I understand your pain, it can be horrible.

Has anyone else had such a bad reaction to this medication?

On April 20th and April 21st I took Xyzal. My doctor told me take it before going to bed because it makes you drowsy. Well it didn't make me drowsy. The pills were only 5 milligrams each. I had 5 days of hallucinations and did not sleep for the 5 nights. The hallucinations were so bad that I ended up in the ER because of the bad reaction. The doctor in the hospital said it was due to the medication. I then spoke with a phychiarist at the hospital which they sent in to talk to me. Since I had no hallucinations in the past and had not ever seen a phychiarist in my life she also determined that it was the medication. I also found the need to report the medication to the FDA and to the Manufacturer UCB. I am currently in treatment for anxiety and they put me on Zoloft because of the fear of going to sleep. I was just was wondering if anybody else had such a bad reaction from this medication or not
