Bactrim Ds 800 160 Tab Side Effects

My husband was prescribed this pill for a staph infection. He has dementia and has had total confusion, craziness, sleeplessness and anger since taking this pill (2 pills in am and 2 pills in PM). Could this be a side effect?

According to the MayoClinic... confusion, irritability, and trouble sleeping are all listed as possible side effects of Bactrim. However what's interesting to me is that they are reported under a category called "incidence not known", which makes me wonder if they haven't actually been able to prove that Bactrim is the cause even though patients have experienced such symptoms during their time on the medication.

My hunch says that Bactrim is a strong suspect, but I would still encourage you to discuss possible solutions with his doctor in hopes that he/she can make adjustments to your husband's dosage or medication and seeing if he has a better response from that point forward.

Does anyone else have suggestions?

Just so you know, Bactrim ES may falsely appear as marjuana in a urinalysis.

I was wondering how long it took for your husbands side effects to clear up? I too am experiencing anxiety, sleeplessness and confusion. I took 2 pills of Bactrim ds over 3 weeks ago and I am still having these awful side effects. The worst of which is insomnia. Thanks for any help or information you can share as I am getting very scared this is not going to go away.

James, are you still experiencing the insomnia? If so how long have you been off of Bactrim if at all? I am still experiencing insomnia among other neurologic issues 2.5 months later.

It has been 2 years this month since I took 2 pills of Bactrim DS and I am still suffering from a significantly milder version of the original side effects which were total insomnia, anxiety, depression, memory loss, confusion, weight loss, constipation, stiff cracking upper neck and others I'm sure. It was a long struggle and I thank god I wasn't fired from my job and my wife didn't leave me. But slowly over time I did get back to being mostly functional. I sleep decently most of the time and I know to just relax when I can't. My body has learned to function well off of 3-6 hours per night, but once or twice a week I'll get 7 or 8 hours. The mental fog and confusion has lessened and I'm back to about 70% of my original mental abilities. My only advise is to be patient and accept that you will get better, but it may take your body some time to fix the damage that was done. There isn't a day that goes by that I don't notice my side effects, but they simply serve more of a reminder of how lucky I am to be mostly recovered now. I have talked to a lot of people who were affected like many of us and it seems healing can vary widely. Some people take a few weeks and others take a few years like myself. I am confident that I will continue to recover, but I also believe that the scar will always be present. I pray for the best for all of you suffering, you are not alone and you will heal.
