Anemia In Gastric Bypass

I had a gastric bypass in 2001. I have anemia now and someone told me that in order for iron to be absorbed, there must be presence of acid in stomach. After bypass there is no gastric acid present. Is this true? Has anyone else had this problem? And if so, how is it treated

If there were no gastric acid, then you would not be able to digest and absorb any food/nutrients. I suggest you speak to your doctor.

You have plenty of acid. Enough that acid ate thru my staple line, ate 6 holes in my pouch and stomach, and I take 3 Rx of antacids.

From what I've read, iron does need gastric acid to be absorbed. The way my surgeon explained it (14 years ago), the part of the stomach used to make the pouch is less elastic and produces less acid. And, my GI doctor said the bypassed part of the small GI tract is where iron is absorbed, so supplements wouldn't help. Since my bypass, I had to get 2 iron infusions (the form that took 4 hours). I'm waiting to be scheduled for my first round of Injectafer. And, I'm being treated for a 2nd ulcer at the gastrojejunal anastomosis. Thank God this one wasn't bleeding.

I guess all doctors say different things, as I always have very low iron and am enemic.
