Amlodipine Side

I was taking lisinopril 5mg for high blood pressure and had severe stomach and back pain after taking the med for 3 weeks. My MD switched me to amlodipine 5mg and the same side effects after 2 weeks. Since they are both calcium channel blockers, should I ask for a different class of drug to control my blood pressure?

These are not both calcium channel blockers, Lisinopril is actually an ACE inhibitor. It is also normal to experience side effects for the first 4 to 5 weeks you are taking a new medication, but they are typically transient and go away with time, once your body adjusts.

However, if your pain is that severe, then yes, you may need to try yet another class of medications to lower your blood pressure. One option would be to try one of the ARBs, such as Losartan.

The FDA lists its typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, increased urination and hypotension.
