Yutopar Aka Ritodrine (Page 4) (Top voted first)
UpdatedThis drug was used for women going into pre-mature labor. It was used to stop the contractions. Unfortunately it had major side effects on the babies. This was an experimental drug used from 1980 -1990 and was then discontinued. I was given this drug and my daughter was born 6 weeks early, had her by c-section. I begin to notice around 12 yrs old that problems were arising in her mental health, still not realizing that this drug played an important factor. I have found many women that this to has happened to, and I'm still looking for more families that this has effected. It is devastating and a nightmare for my daughter who is now 30 yrs. old. If you have any information I would really like to visit with you about your child. Thank you for reading this, we need to band together for our kids.
The law should take into consideration that symptoms don't emerge until puberty, and we are just now starting to lay blame where it belongs. The FDA is the culprit here if it led US doctors to believe this drug was safe for more than 2 weeks of use as originally intended by those marketing the drug in the Netherlands.
Had a Very similar experience with my daughter continuing to date. My neighbor tells of a similar story also. I would really like to speak with you about any similarities in symptoms they might have and if anything has worked for you. Symptoms seem to range beginning from early childhood to early puberty then seem to be ongoing for all these kids. Someone needs to collect the data, I bet we all have more in common than we know.
I was given this drug at 11weeks pregnant my son is 2yrs old and has started have seizers.
My son is living a life of hell due to this drug. Please file a report with FDA explaining the effects it has had on your child. If enough of us do this, maybe they will be forced to address this and give us answers. Anyone know the original reasons given for removing it from the market?
I think a woman in Australia died while on the drug, and that was what led to its being banned. At the time the babies weren't showing any ill effects, but some mothers were. One followup study on the children followed them to the age of five or so. Unfortunately the problems weren't manifesting until puberty.
I was given Yutopar in 1982 for premature labor and my son was born full term. He has suffered all his life with behavior disorders and has been given multiple diagnoses'. While taking Yutopar I suffered bad side effects and wondered if the drug would affect the baby, but it was difficult to get any answers because the drug was new and experimental (my insurance did not pay for it and it was very expensive), but no one knew the LONG term effects on the child. It's just too coincidental that there are so many (now grown) children of mothers who took Yutopar who have experienced similar life experiences. I need validation that this drug contributed to my sons' disabilities.
Another relapse for my daughter. This time she said she was close to suicide. Medicaid facilities are not cutting it for her, and I realize that she must work the program also. The problem is that both her mental health and addiction issues are not being addressed simultaneously. Yutopar has a major role in her issues and there's nothing we can do.
Reen, So sorry to hear about your daughter. I feel your pain and frustration, I have the same problems with my son. He doesn't have Medicaid and didn't qualify for Affordable Healthcare because he can not work and make enough money to qualify. You can't get Obamacare if you don't make a certain amount, and the state we live in - Virginia - didn't extend Medicaid to everyone. So, he is hard pressed on getting any help at all for his mental issues. Programs are free and do help, but don't address both issues at the same time. Also mental health CARE is not available in a lot of areas either. At least not for Ritodrine Babies. Maybe if they had a name and face then specific treatment plans could be developed. But that would involve people who cared and the all mighty dollard.
As much as I appreciate being able to connect with others on this site, we are still limited to what we can share here. Makes it impossible to communicate with others suffering from Yutopar. What is needed the most in this situation is to be able to contact each other, but sharing personal info (phone numbers-email addresses) is not allowed.
I have not discussed Yutopar with my children. My oldest has Anosognosia (lack of insight for illness/psychosis) along with many mental and emotional issues. I don't want to risk him coming across anything that I might post. I would prefer to talk to other moms via email or phone.
I often wonder how many suicides in children and young adults can be due to this drug. And people in this age group that have committed crimes and mental illness was determined to be the reason, could this drug play a part? Seems like in so many of these situations, the person is in the 20-30 age group. Could some of these people suffer from the affects of Yutopar given to their mothers for preterm labor? Of course, we'll never know because the damage that this drug caused has been swept under the rug and the makers of the drug have no one to answer to.
Wouldn't it be wonderful if there was just ONE lawyer in this country that would listen to our stories and take on the people responsible for our children's mental health issues!? Psychiatrist, psychologist, counselors, hospitals, rehabs, medications and lawyers are not free and their mental health issues aren't temporary, they are for LIFE!
Re: PatAdkins (# 96)
Pat, I've given up on the doctors helping. With all of the research that I've done on my son's symptoms, I honestly believe that I know just as much or possibly more than they do. I've been thinking about the doctors distancing themselves from this drug. I believe they fear a patient they've prescribed medications to of ANY kind, will come forth and sue them for prescribing the drug because it harmed them. So, they don't want to touch this. I did discuss Yutopar AGAIN with my newest doctor. He actually got his computer and looked it up. After reading a little info, his comment was "but how can you prove it was the drug?" A good question, but seriously, how are all of the other drugs prescribed that caused harm proven to be the cause? Obviously, with all of the tort legal suits you see on tv, there is a way. It's all a matter of finding just ONE person to listen to us and take our concerns seriously. I found the NYT journalist that did a report on Ritodrine in 1992. I wasn't sure how to contact her directly, so I commented on one of her tweets, which was totally off topic. Asked her to consider doing a follow-up on the effects the drug has had on the adult children. No response, of course. So I'll continue to search for help, but not from doctors. I've lost respect for most of them. I'd like to let everyone know just how serious this is by telling you that my son attempted suicide this week. Fortunately, he failed. But that doesn't mean he won't attempt it again. He is in absolute pain and agony. Ritodrine/Yutopar - spread the word.
Re: mig (# 108)
An update on my daughter's situation: She has zero copper... She goes to Dallas in Jan to get transfusions. Please read up on that as it could be the key to helping these kids. Merry Christmas Mig and hang in there girl.
Re: PatAdkins (# 112)
Pat, I’ve wondered about magnesium levels, too, since — as I understand it — Yutopar affected those levels. That was the deficiency in my brain that sent me into grand mal seizures after the twins were born. Good luck with the copper treatment. May it be an answer to prayer.

Thank you. Let’s get this info out there. We need to find help for our adult children from someone. All of our children suffering from similar mental illnesses after using this drug cannot just be a coincidence.
Re: PatAdkins (# 123)
Thank you, Pat. How shocking what happened to your daughter! That was a traumatic accident — 42 stitches! I hope she recovers soon. Also hope you get some answers. Praying for you all.
I was given this drug in 1983 and 1988. I always questioned the effects it might have because of the severe tachycardia and dizziness it gave me. Both of my boys have had issues..but no answers...he was born with a cleft lip requiring 7 surgeries and now suffers from different symptoms including heart related ones, but getting no where with evaluations...financially straining. The other has severe anxiety..joint pain and headaches. Cluster headaches. Both have been frustrated..not knowing what is really wring. If we only knew what we know now. I had no idea it was an experimental drug!!!
Re: Reen (# 133)
OMG that would be awesome... Is it ok if I share this on my FB page? This is exciting!!!! It's time for us parents to make a lot of noise...we will be heard!
Re: Reen (# 133)
Let's hope everyone sees this!! This would be fantastic.
Keep this thread alive. Most of us parents are in survival mode with adult children of Yutopar, still looking for answers.
Re: Martha (# 137)
Just picked my son up from his 5th hospitalization. This is so cruel, our kids need help and we all need answers!
