Yutopar Aka Ritodrine (Page 3)
(Newest replies first)

Updated

This drug was used for women going into pre-mature labor. It was used to stop the contractions. Unfortunately it had major side effects on the babies. This was an experimental drug used from 1980 -1990 and was then discontinued. I was given this drug and my daughter was born 6 weeks early, had her by c-section. I begin to notice around 12 yrs old that problems were arising in her mental health, still not realizing that this drug played an important factor. I have found many women that this to has happened to, and I'm still looking for more families that this has effected. It is devastating and a nightmare for my daughter who is now 30 yrs. old. If you have any information I would really like to visit with you about your child. Thank you for reading this, we need to band together for our kids.

Re: Mdijon (# 115) Expand Referenced Message

Changes occur around puberty, I believe, although one of my daughters began exhibiting debilitating social anxiety before then.

Mdijon (# 117) --

Thank you. Let’s get this info out there. We need to find help for our adult children from someone. All of our children suffering from similar mental illnesses after using this drug cannot just be a coincidence.

Re: PatAdkins (# 112) Expand Referenced Message

Pat I’m so happy that your daughter has finally found someone that can help. Can I ask what type of doctor she was seeing that discovered this and any tests that were done? I’ve been reading about Methylation pathway, it’s so hard to understand, but seems like that may be something we should look into. Just can’t find a doctor around here that is willing to try anything other than medication. And so far, none of those have helped. I’ll never stop searching for help, never. Please keep us updated on your daughter. Wishing you all the best.

Re: PatAdkins (# 112) Expand Referenced Message

Pat, I’ve wondered about magnesium levels, too, since — as I understand it — Yutopar affected those levels. That was the deficiency in my brain that sent me into grand mal seizures after the twins were born. Good luck with the copper treatment. May it be an answer to prayer.

An update on my daughter's situation: She has zero copper... She goes to Dallas in Jan to get transfusions. Please read up on that as it could be the key to helping these kids. Merry Christmas Mig and hang in there girl.

What about the March of Dimes? I wonder if they could provide any information on Yutopar/Ritodrine?

Re: Amanda H (# 106) Expand Referenced Message

I had not heard that this is a concern along with so many other symptoms. Do you know how long your mother took Yutopar/Ritodrine? I had a hard time with pregnancies, two miscarriages before my two children. Premature labor with both of them. I took Yutopar longer with my oldest, which suffers the most. With my youngest I developed heart problems (along with him) while in the hospital for preterm labor. At that point I was taken off of Yutopar and started Brethine for duration of pregnancy. Brethine also caused problems for my youngest, mostly digestive, but also depression and anxieties.

Re: PatAdkins (# 96) Expand Referenced Message

Pat, I've given up on the doctors helping. With all of the research that I've done on my son's symptoms, I honestly believe that I know just as much or possibly more than they do. I've been thinking about the doctors distancing themselves from this drug. I believe they fear a patient they've prescribed medications to of ANY kind, will come forth and sue them for prescribing the drug because it harmed them. So, they don't want to touch this. I did discuss Yutopar AGAIN with my newest doctor. He actually got his computer and looked it up. After reading a little info, his comment was "but how can you prove it was the drug?" A good question, but seriously, how are all of the other drugs prescribed that caused harm proven to be the cause? Obviously, with all of the tort legal suits you see on tv, there is a way. It's all a matter of finding just ONE person to listen to us and take our concerns seriously. I found the NYT journalist that did a report on Ritodrine in 1992. I wasn't sure how to contact her directly, so I commented on one of her tweets, which was totally off topic. Asked her to consider doing a follow-up on the effects the drug has had on the adult children. No response, of course. So I'll continue to search for help, but not from doctors. I've lost respect for most of them. I'd like to let everyone know just how serious this is by telling you that my son attempted suicide this week. Fortunately, he failed. But that doesn't mean he won't attempt it again. He is in absolute pain and agony. Ritodrine/Yutopar - spread the word.

Re: Amanda H (# 106) Expand Referenced Message

I had twin girls in 88. Both have struggled with anxiety and depression like you. One has a child. I had never heard the sterility side effect before your post. Pat Adkins, the woman who began this thread, also has a healthy grandchild.

My mom told me when I was 19 about being given yutopar when she was pregnant with me. I'm 31 now. She only told me about a possible side effect on sterile babies. It's something I've always wondered about, especially since I have yet to conceive a child. But reading this thread has me realizing that maybe the anxiety I've experienced since I was a preteen is from this. Idk though, because it's taken me years to even find information on this drug. Until today. What other things do I need to worry about? Has anyone else heard of the children being sterile?

We can't share personal information like phone numbers, email or home addresses, but it WOULD be extremely helpful if we could contact one another. Pretty much limits us to just sharing experiences with the drug and its effects on our children, also receive support from others, it helps to know that you are not alone. I find it shocking the number of illnesses our adult children have in common. Seems blatantly clear that Yutopar is the connector in their lives. Finding someone to listen and help prove this is the roadblock we keep running into. I've discussed this with psychiatrists, psychologists, counselors, primary doctors, ER doctors, my OBGYN, TBI specialists at a major hospital in MD and not one of them even considered that Yutopar could have caused this. I also suggested they read other posts from moms on these sites. Got nothing, no interest period.

I've gotten to the point now that I've given up on finding help and just try to make it from one day to the next with my son. Constantly told meds are the only thing that will help, yet after trying almost everyone out there, plus combinations of drugs, he gets worse each day. I wake each morning worrying that he has given up on fighting this hell (and he has fought it) and decided that he has had enough. Hospitalization seemed to make his symptoms so much worse. And we also lost his trust in us. I would suggest contacting the FDA and informing them that you took this drug, symptoms you or your child are experiencing and year it was taken. Don't expect anything in return, but at least it will be documented in their records. In the meantime, you can search online for Yutopar aka Ritodrine and may find more help there.

Same thing happened to me. Faith in God is the answer. You were created in the image of God. He spoke and it was, you speak and what you say happens. Start speaking God's Word of healing over your daughter and she will be healed. "I am the Lord that healeth thee", "Jesus bore her sickness and her diseases and by His stripes she is healed". Mark 11:23. God is faithful. The power to perform God's Word is contained in his Word (Luke 1:37) Greek NT. God will not fail you.

Yes, I told him about the Ritodrine and that it appears that he is not alone. He went on a big story about EMD dumps and how anti psychotics only paralyzed the frontal lobe which have nothing to do with EMD. I don't know what he is even talking about but describes pyschosis as the same thing that happens when you are near death and go somewhere else. The bottom line is he kind of ignored what I said and moved to a new story.

My son has similar delusions. He has episodes that are frightening and asks why won't you believe/help me. He suffers many side effects from medications as well, that's why we keep trying others. Also, none have helped with the psychosis. We've been told that will never go away completely, but meds should help him to deal with them - NOPE! He also drinks, whatever he can get, not just beer. Says it's the only thing that helps, but it's just bringing on new problems to deal with. Alcohol and the meds he is on are not a good mix.
Curious, I hope you don't mind me asking, have you discussed the Yutopar with him? And does he have insight (aware that this is an illness) at any time? Because of my sons delusions, I haven't mentioned it. That would be like adding fuel to the fire. The doctor thinks the psychosis is a combination of head injuries and drug induced. The drug use started when the emotional and mental issues started, it was his coping mechanism. At about the same age as everyone else's started whos mothers were given Yutopar for preterm labor.
