Yutopar Aka Ritodrine (Page 3)
UpdatedThis drug was used for women going into pre-mature labor. It was used to stop the contractions. Unfortunately it had major side effects on the babies. This was an experimental drug used from 1980 -1990 and was then discontinued. I was given this drug and my daughter was born 6 weeks early, had her by c-section. I begin to notice around 12 yrs old that problems were arising in her mental health, still not realizing that this drug played an important factor. I have found many women that this to has happened to, and I'm still looking for more families that this has effected. It is devastating and a nightmare for my daughter who is now 30 yrs. old. If you have any information I would really like to visit with you about your child. Thank you for reading this, we need to band together for our kids.
I first posted to this thread a year-and-a-half ago, and I hope others will continue to share their experiences here. The little research I was able to do into the use of Yutopar revealed that the drug came from the Netherlands and that it was never intended to be prescribed for more than two weeks. Doctors in America, however, used it for much longer periods of time, resulting in the issues our children deal with now. I also learned that some Pediatric Association in the Netherlands did a follow-up. The follow-up, however, traced children only up until their 5th year. That research study showed no indication that children of Yutopar had been adversely affected. But as you read these personal stories on this thread, you'll see that these children do not exhibit consequences of that drug until they reach puberty. I am hoping someone will be able to do a more extensive follow-up now that these children are adults. I am also concerned that these children are now having children of their own. Let us hope the next generation is not also afflicted with the damage caused by the Yutopar drug.
I'm very sorry for your loss. I too find myself not knowing if today is the day I lose my daughter due to drug overdose or suicide. It's a very scary road we travel on 24/7. I thank God this was not passed on to other generations...I'm raising my grandson no signs or symptoms. I pray for all of you, children and parents, that walk the yutopar road with no happy end. Peace and love being sent to you.
I believe the drug was FDA approved; however, the drug was misused by American doctors. It is my understanding that the drug was never intended to be used for more than 2 weeks. American doctors, however, prescribed it for the duration of the pregnancy in many cases. The drug was eventually removed from the market, but I believe that happened only as a result of a legal case in Australia where the mother's death was linked to Yutopar.
Would love to speak with you. myself and my neighbor have similar stories. Can hardly believe no one knows about this. Many have our stories.
Lawyers won't help. We need a legal suit. We need Erin Brockovich.
Well I was never told of any possible side effects as a matter of fact was told it was perfectly safe. Now know it was pulled in Canada oh I mean banned because of the side effects. Someone should be held accountable and these kids need help.
My daughter just had another relapse this past weekend, opiates. Someone should help us, help our children!!
This should be told nationally. There may be thousands of mothers, children and now grandchildren affected by this and struggling to find an answer. The maker of this drug did not do its due diligence.
I was given this drug when went into premature labour with my twins in 1980.i was taken into hospital at 28 weeks and had the twins at 32 weeks one of my twins died 32 hours later.i always blame this drug for what happened.
I believe you are my dear friend Maureen whose daughter I know quite well and you know my son. I have had problems with him his entire life, social, behavioral and substance abuse. I was in Albany Medical Center for close to 2 weeks with premature labor and put on this drug while I was about 30-31 weeks pregnant. I guess I'm just tired of him having to be on some form of medication for him to live a normal life. Drugs for ADHD and substance abuse. It is so frustrating, I just want him to have a normal life and to be able to have a relationship with him that isn't always strained due to his behavior. Going through this and reading everyone's comments has already helped me to understand it wasn't anything I did in raising him or that he is a bad kid. I definitely hope we can find a resolution to this problem!
I was telling someone my story yesterday about going into prem labour with my second child. This prompted me to look up the drug that i was given to stop my labour and i am absolutely overwhelmed by what i have read here this morning. I see my daughters story in so many if yours. I didn't know this had been discontinued, i didn't know about these side effects but everything is falling into place. Right now im feeling sick at the thought of this. I notice most if not all of you are in the US.Are you aware of any similar groups in the UK as this is where i am?
Also, when my daughter was born there was a knot in the umbilical cord. I'd never heard of this happening but the nurse said it was very rare and could cause problems. Just wondering if anyone else had this.
My daughter is once again in a hospital. Mental and emotional disorders. I just said to my husband that I wondered why they took Yutopar off the market and if this could be related to her issues. We just can't figure it out. After reading this I am shocked. Our life has been hell.
My daughter is now 32 and has suffered from mental health, addiction, and social anxiety since she was 14 yes old. I was on the drug both IV and PO for many weeks during my pregnancy. I have tried and am currently seeking the help of an attorney willing to help despite the statute of limitations. This should be a class action suite, as many of us didn't see signs in our children until they were older, let alone linked the issues to this obviously damaging drug!
I have twin daughters who were born in 1983. They were normal, except for constant step throat, until they were about 12 years old. Then we noticed behavioral problems, depression and anger. They are suffering as adults and cannot understand why they feel like they do. One has drug addiction problems. I have been trying to understand what happened for years. Only now did I decide check on the Ritadrine. I see now I am not the only one.
Yes and I think the drug is still used there. Please warn these new to be moms this is not the direction they want to go. My daughter was six weeks early but the damage that drug caused is unbelievable I hate knowing the hell these babies will face. Please check for me see if this drug has been discontinued there I maybe wrong but I know in third world countries it is still available. May God bless you and your family
Or was the FDA at fault? As I understand it, this drug, developed in the Netherlands, was never intended for long term use. Why did American doctors prescribe it for weeks or months on end?
I wish we knew more. Several people have gone to attorney's to get help and they say the statute of limitations is up. But I wonder if we can find more answers. We need help.
The law should take into consideration that symptoms don't emerge until puberty, and we are just now starting to lay blame where it belongs. The FDA is the culprit here if it led US doctors to believe this drug was safe for more than 2 weeks of use as originally intended by those marketing the drug in the Netherlands.
Had a Very similar experience with my daughter continuing to date. My neighbor tells of a similar story also. I would really like to speak with you about any similarities in symptoms they might have and if anything has worked for you. Symptoms seem to range beginning from early childhood to early puberty then seem to be ongoing for all these kids. Someone needs to collect the data, I bet we all have more in common than we know.
