Xanax Vs Valium

I am having eye surgery in two days. I am used to .5mg Xanax and it calms me for flying and other things I have anxiety for. Don't take it often. My dr told me to take 5mg of Valium for surgery because it lasts longer then Xanax. I'm afraid this will not work as well. I am very anxious about this surgery and need to be awake and stay still.

Versed is the name of the medication they often give IV in pre-op.

Oh yes I am aware of that. Some Doctors give liquid Valium for Colonoscopy /Endoscopies. Those are administered at the time of the procedure. There should be no problem taking the medicine, either medicine. However I would always caution someone driving on any medicine that might sedate you. Hopefully someone else is driving and honestly the Xanax will work just as well

EDDY, in some situations when the patient is highly anxious and the "surgery" is in a setting such as eye surgery or dental procedures where the patient is not given IV's, it is not unusual for the dr to prescribe valium before surgery. There is a water soluable valium or something similiar to it that they give IV for surgeries.
