Will Oxycontin Be Changed Back To Original Formula (Page 26)
Updatedis Oxycontin going back to their old formula? OC instead of OP.
Thats no fun at all Jay! Yep i can attest to the same... I hadn't even had a filling before getting sick & having to go onto the oxycontin, now I'm battling to keep my teeth...besides the dry mouth, these types of medications can prevent your body from absorbing calcium properly, so its a really good idea to also take vitamin c & calcium tablets.. Vit C aids in calcium absorption. I take a whole laundry list of vitamins to try & keep my body strong as i can as i dont eat as well as i should at times. When my pain levels are high the last thing i want to do is eat, so can go for days without eating... I throw up, so its not through lack of trying... It just doesn't stay down. Mind you, it doesn't help me stay skinny... Unbelievable.... That would be a nice side effect at least... Lol... I used to eat anything i wanted & not put on a kilo......but i did ride 8-10 horses a day track work & then go to full time job so burnt it off i guess. Jay I hope your mouth feels better, it really sucks watching your teeth falling apart when its not your fault... People do make sure you floss, use mouth wash & brush at least twice a day, it really is important as you can see Jay is going through hell. I was brushing my teeth a couple of nights ago & one of my teeth broke... They just crumble like chalk.. Let us know how your going with it all Jay.. Take care.
Has or does anyone suffer from sleep problems. Like broken sleep, snoring or not breathing properly from using OxyContin ?
Hope everyone is pain free.
Hi, yes I have 'non-restorative' sleep and have taken 10 or 15 mg of Stilnox (Ambien) for twelve years now, cannot sleep at all without it but I don't mind. I don't know if it's related to the Oxycontin as I have been on it longer than the Stilnox, my sleep problems are 'supposed' to be due to fibromyalgia however I never had sleep issues prior to being on pain medication, that is when my sleep problems started many years ago now.
I used to get seven hours years ago (on Stilnox) but now I get five then end up sleeping in my recliner for an hour in the morning, after I take my pain medication, then I wake up properly and start my day. Sleep is a big issue for me. I have gained a lot of weight since I stopped sleeping properly and I believe it is related. You might find that taking Lyrica helps you to sleep as it calms the brain down, I tried it but I was too drowsy in the morning but my husband swears by it, saying he sleeps better and is more awake in the morning! The opposite of me.
If you can get into a good sleep routine that might help you settle so make sure the room is totally dark and quiet, that you are not too hot or cold. I changed from a quilt to cotton blankets and from cotton sheets to flannelette sheets, much more absorbent as I can sweat at night. I have found it easier to control my body temperature with this change of bedding this also helps me sleep better.
Also, when do you take your medication? That might make a difference to your sleeping also. Are you on the generic or the reformulation and are you on long acting or short acting? The short acting will keep you awake.
Hope this helps, what does everyone else think?
Cheers
Yep me too, although for me the sleep issues are a direct relation to my pain level mainly. My pain treated properly with generic oxycontin sits at a 6-7 generally...this is pretty good for me as it gets up to a 9-10 pretty quickly when on the reformulation. Im never on the lower end of the scale anymore, only in the early years could i get down to a 4-5 & i just cant remember being in such little pain now. I sleep on & off all night.... couple hours sleep, couple hours awake sort of thing...i do get a couple of decent hours if i take my medication in morning at 4/5am as it settles the pain best at that point. I take temazapam 10mg at night & have been for most of the time ive been sick.... Started when going in & out of hospital for long periods for operations & complications & doc decided to leave me with them to try & get a little sleep. I agree Jay sleep deprivation does cause weight gain, its actually been proven...along with pain that prevents or stops the amount of physical activity you do, & the medication also causes weight gain & fluid build up in some people...& in those lucky ones weight loss can happen! ?? unfortunately im the former & as i was extremely fit & did a ton of exercise before falling ill that muscle & my body not able to burn calories the same has seen me put on 10kg i just cant shift. I get edema in my legs really badly. Its horrible & embarrassing but i cant get rid of it completely no matter how hard i work at it. Lyrica didnt help me, but i know it works for some esp people with back & nerve pain. Another is Gabapenton...Neurontin is brand name....an anti seizure medication given to people with pain sometimes...ive tried pretty much everything with my pain specialist, unfortunately nothing much helps bar the oxycontin which at least gives a little relief. The other way to try & help sleep is to do relaxation techniques such as Yoga, meditation, aromatherapy & theres a lot of natural sleep meds you could try...this is where i focus much of my energy... I love Yoga it really does a lot for your body & mind, if interested theres plenty of basic Yoga videos on youtube that can get you started... Hope that helps, best wishes everyone.
What I don't understand is why none of my doctors, spinal specialist, PCP, Psychiatrist, none of them, told me about "dry mouth." I have been on some of these meds for years. In fact, I have been taking something for high blood pressure since 1982. I coveted my teeth. I think the local chapter of the AMA should have a fund whereby you can apply to get veneers if you start having issues with your teeth due to dry mouth that is a direct result of medication.
These are old posts but Oxycontin is in the news because Purdue lost their patent three months ago. Supposedly, the generic is like the old OC. I'm wondering if it really is like the old formula, without all of the jelly type binding materials.
I always worried about what that was doing to my stomach.
Wendy, the generic made by Sandoz is the same as original formula.... But im sorry to say for you in the US (im guessing that as you are mentioning Purdue) there's no generic of original formula.. We are all in Australia & after Mundipharma (our dis of Oxycontin) had their patent finish here last year they did same thing as Purdue in US & tried to have the original formula banned so new OP formula would give them a whole new patent for another10 yrs & keep the market for themselves. Lol....thanx to our government not bowing to pressure from them to ban original formula, we had a generic option of it within 3 months. The whole guise of it being because of drug abuse is bull... The only time it was changed was exactly when the patent ran out in each country 3 years apart!!!! We do feel for you very much as those few months on that disgusting silicone crap made many of us sick & caused a lot of issues with pain control. All i can say is get as many people as you can to keep calling, emailing & producing petitions to your local MP & federal government including FDA. try & also get some media attention that will put pressure on & question those with power to do something. I wish you the best, no one should be denied pain relief medication that works for them...esp when its all about pharmaceutical companies $$$$$.
I'm in Fort Worth, Texas and I just filled my 80mg Oxycontin prescription with the Sandoz 80mg generic at my pharmacy on Saturday 08/08/2015. All I can say is, WOW! Having a solid ER oxycodone product again made me get teary eyed! I almost forgot what it was like to have decent long acting pain reduction that doesn't tear up my GI system. Their still extremely expensive and only $75 less than what I paid for the brand name and only come in 80mg as of now. I guess Perdue Pharma lost their strangle hold on their Oxy Poison (OP) formulation in court. Hopefully Sandoz will be able to make all the different mg strengths that Oxycontin comes in for all of you out there looking for a quality ER oxycodone product. I'm sure Purdue Pharma will do everything in their power to keep it from happening and keep an extremely inferior product on the market making people suffer needlessly so they can get richer! God bless the judge whoever he or she is that allowed Sandoz to sell their 80mg Oxycontin. I'm guessing no one will be buying the brand name 80mg OP Oxycontin ever again. If Perdue Pharma doesn't fix their inferior OP formulation they can kiss their Oxycontin cash cow goodbye forever!
Mark, thats great news.....its so unfair that Purdue where able to get the ban of original Oxycontin through the FDA.....as always its about $$$$ not real peoples health. My pharmacist recently had a letter, from the health department (Australias governing body for medications etc.) asking why I can't take the new OP formula....she explained it made me extremely ill, vomiting, stomach pains & the pain relief was nowhere near as good or consistent as original tablet. I wonder if they are doing a survey to see what issues Australians are having. I hope the rest of the US get the same relief your now having Mark....,good luck all!
Jay & regulars will be interested in this!!! Ive been in hospitsl having surgery to fix a 20 x15cm hernia...thanx to previous abdo surgery!! But thats not what im talking about, sorry sodetracked.. while there the hospital was giving me my regular meds.... of course i get a dose when i was with it enough to know i need to swallow.... Look at it & see the familiar 80 on one side, about to have a melt down & see other side of tablet has OC!!!! Soooo my friends....either they were old stock, (i did get OP given as well though) or Mundipharma realise the games up & if they want their money back they need to produce the original!!!! Interested to hear if anyone else has seen original OC around?
Now that I've taken this new Sandoz generic for a few days and I'm continuing to have the same GI issues. I contacted Sandoz only to find out that Purdue Pharmaceutical is actually manufacturing the generic for Sandoz and it is the same crappy ingredients from the brand name in the generic. So those of you like myself who got your hopes up that finally we were going to get a quality ER oxycodone product again that would work as well as the original formulation are shafted here in America once again. Purdue Pharmaceuticals OP Oxy Poison is still being unloaded on us. I guess when the current patent runs out Purdue Pharmaceutical will then of course make a new version that might actually work right. Using the excuse of all the people complaining about GI issues as the reason for another reformulation, because the tamper resistant excuse has already been used to get a new patent.
I'm sorry to have gotten anyone's hopes up by my previous post, but after personally talking to a Sandoz representative by phone just now and it is certain that the Sandoz generic is indeed made by Perdue Pharmaceutical for Sandoz and is the exact same OP formulation that Purdue Pharmaceutical brand name contains. Needless to say I'm angry that this BS Purdue Pharmaceutical Oxy Poison is still being shoved down our throats, literally...
Hi Mark from Fort Worth, Texas. So sorry to hear all this, how very upsetting. Here in Australia, the new Oxycontin made by Sandoz, IS made by Sandoz and not by Purdue (was called Mundipharma here in Oz). I have read that you can tell if it is the new one or not by the fact that the reformulation will not crumple and will turn into jelly if exposed to water. They say the new Sandoz oxycontin will crumple and will not turn to jelly if exposed to water. Of course if it's tampered with then the 'time release' action would be lost. I am only suggesting this as a way you can tell for sure, which medication you have being given. Also, just download the ingredients from each medication and you will be able to see the difference in the formulation.
We all know about the awful GI effects, it is caused by the Polyethylene Oxide coating that is is used to make glue! We were all so sick when it changed but are now better on the new Sandoz here in Oz. Our hearts go out to all of you in the USA because 'choice' has been denied you. Being in pain is no joke. I think everyone is lumped together, and your 'war on drugs' in the USA has created an unfair situation for people that use the meds only for pain relief. I can only suggest that you form a group as there is 'power in numbers' and try to get a petition together so you can approach the 'powers that be' in your country to try and bring about change. There is a website called change.org here in Oz where anyone can create a petition and people have successfully changed government decisions by getting thousands of signatures so they had to listen to the people. Is there anything like this in the USA? Maybe have a search and find out what you can do. I wish you all the best and I HOPE things change for you all, and soon. Cheers!
Hi everyone.....
First thing I want to say is that I'm so sorry for all you Americans stuck in the awful situation you are in with the pain medication problems. I feel so greatful to be in Australia and for the Sandos company.
I recently moved up to Queenand and have had a bit of trouble finding a doctor that didn't want to change my medication around but after 5 months I've managed to find a lovely doc who believes that I should stick to what works..... thank god for that.
I also want to thank you Jay for your ideas on my sleeping problems. I did as you said and removed the Doona from our bed and replaced them with cotton blankets. I'm having a much better sleep now. So thank you Jay.
All the best everyone.
Come on now what you're really talking about is that you're pissed that the new formula can't be inj'ed without going through a couple of steps, don't give me this s*** about a GI problem, we're not i****s okay. I'm in the same boat, the needles better I get it. It only takes 1 minute to prep vs 30 seconds. Be glad your still getting any oxycodone, Obama's bulls*** agenda involving Healthcare is why the DEA has cracked down so hard on all doctors, including pain management specialist. F*** obama. Biggest liar of all time.
Mark, you mentioned in post #508 you were able to get Sandoz 80mg Oxycontin at a pharmacy in Fort Worth, Texas. I thought Sandoz were only sold in Australia? So, just to clarify, is this the version that does not make your stomach feel awful? Thanks and I look forward to hearing your thoughts.
Hey Scott in post #511 you can see that after I took the Sandoz generic it caused the same GI effects, so I called Sandoz and they told me that Perdue Pharmaceutical is making the generic for Sandoz. Also that it is the same exact formulation as the Perdue Pharmaceutical version. So basically we're all still up the creek with the same OP Oxy Poison version with the Sandoz generic. The only difference is the pill's color/markings and it does have the OP on one side(should have known something was up seeing that)and it's $75 cheaper. Those of us in America get the shaft once again...
Mark, thank you very much for your quick and informative reply. Reading various message boards, I am getting conflicting information regarding what country to obtain the old oxys? Clearly they have not been prescribed in the USA for a few years, but if one was to fly to another country to get the old oxys, could you list a few countries as options please? Thanks in advance.
20yrsofoxy, your wrong!!! While some people may have that agenda in mInd....its certainly not all of us. I haven't & never would abuse this medication, especially inj'ing. it!! When taking the OP formula i started to get stomach cramps, vomiting, would see undissolved pills when going to the toilet & my pain level was much higher. I found this forum when trying to find information on this & was extremely grateful to find others in the same boat & being able to share our experiences. Luckily for those of us in Aus our government doesn't have the same opinion as you!!! I don't know how you get away with abusing it like that, if you so sick or injured that you need this medication, surely you have had operations/hospital admissions for treatment.....wouldn't the doctors see marks where you inj., i don't get it!!!! Sorry Mark that you are still in same situation over there.
Mel if your in America, which I presume you are, as far as I know it's not going back to the old formula. Some of us on here are Australian and for a while we had are formulation change which caused a lot of us health problems. So sorry, no I think is the answer.....
20yrsofoxy....I think your on the wrong website. I believe most of us on here are in pain and need these tablets to help us cope with everyday life. I think after misusing your oxycontins for 20 years it's caused you to lose your trust in people probably because you can't be trusted. You seem to know a fair bit about administering them via other ways than prescribed. Therefore it's people like you that I'm pissed off at. It's people like you that caused me to be ill due to the reformulation of OxyContin so that it made it harder for you to commit suicide. Do us all a favor and stop putting your thoughts, that are wrong, on here, there's a lot of pages for junkies to talk shop....
It has been 1 year since I last posted. Still taking the OP poison (it deserves that name), because my PC won't change my pain med. to anything else. He thinks that anyone on a pain med. should have to take the tamper resistant type so we don't become drug addicts. He actually told me that. He is a weirdo just like Perdue, the FDA & whoever else. I'm told that my PC no longer dispenses narcotic pain meds to new pain patients for any reason, not even cancer. The only pain patients who are recieving pain meds from him are those who have been taking them long term. Although he repeatedly asks all of his pain patients to quit cold turkey, and treats us all like we are drug addicts. My pain med really isn't working at all anymore but my PC does not care. When I mentioned my pain level to him recently, his response was, "I'm not changing anything. I want you to stop taking it!" I live in a small rural community with no other options unless I want to drive 100 miles & I can't do that. There are no other doctors nearby. On the OC formula I was able to work & live normal. On the OP, I can no longer work & am quite incapacitated but my PC overlooks that & asks me if I would like to have Physical Therapy. The last time I had PT, they hurt me so bad that I was in bed for 6 weeks. Of course my PC doesn't remember that when I remind him every time. I am so down & depressed. I feel as though there is nothing left for me on this Earth. I can't live a normal life, so who even wants to go on living like this. One small change in medication would give me my whole life back but instead I have to suffer because of money & politics.
