Will Oxycontin Be Changed Back To Original Formula (Page 17)

is Oxycontin going back to their old formula? OC instead of OP.
What area do u live in Kashmir? I use the same chemist all the time & have no problem getting them in for me. I suppose they are worried about getting broken in to, but there are other opiat medications beside oxycontin, why dont the addicts steal those? Thats one thing i just dont get, whats the difference?
Michelle thank you for such an informative answer. So much more I want ask you and compare notes. Before I KNEW it was the last refill of methadone that was making me so sick, I went several drs. I could tell there was something going on with my kidneys too. But they all wanted to say it was my back! I knew it wasn't my back. My back was fine. Sadly I have the kind of body and brain the can tell ssomething is wrong WAAAY before it shows up in lab work! For 9 months I tried to tell many diff drs about the kidney pain. Nothing showed in my labs, EXCEPT my ESINOPHILS were elevated OFF THE CHARTS. I didn't know what that meant, but was told it just signified I had allergies of Some sort. Anyway my urine was like water for months. The dat would say there was no color to it, cuz I was well hydrated. One day I got THE WORST PAIN in my side and low back. I had my husband call 911, I'm in arizona, and Washington state. I go back and forth for the weather. ( snow bird)
Anyway I was admitted to the hospital with complete kidney failure. As it turned out the tube to my right kidney ruptured, right where it attaches to the top of the kidney. Several of my other organs were enlarged and inflamed. My pancreas gall bladder and lung tissue. I was later told when urine is absolutely clear like water, I mean going in a cup, not a toilet where water dilutes the color, it means your kidneys ARE NOT FILTERING the waste in your system. The yellow color is the waste. Sorry people don't mean to be so gross/ graphic. Lol I was in the hospital for 10 days. Thankfully I didn't need surgery like they anticipated. Another thing, when I was still taking the methadone, the new refill that made me so sick, I had a seizure.
Never ever had one my life. ever. I had what is called a JACK KNIFE SEIZURE. I was still doing by the time the medics got to my house. That type seizure is when your body goes ridged, but you bend at the waist.. You r stiff like a board accept your torso and legs meet. My forehead was hitting my knees. My legs would come up straight and stiff and my torso would go forward while lying on my back. Hard to describe. The first thing they ask was if I had come into contact with any rat poison or anything with strychnine!!!
I said no absolutely not, but I've been sick for weeks. The medics said again, this type of seizure is associated with strychnine poisoning. Probably a year AFTER I realized it was the new refill of methadone that had been making me so sick ( I had been switched to MS Contin by now) I thought to look up the company that made the methadone, . As it turns out t h at company DID IN FACT manufacturer strychnine!! I really didn't know what to think. A few times a year, I would Google it again, just to make sure I was reading it correctly. Then about 2 yrs ago that ppharmaceutical co. Was bought out by another, and they no longer listed it. I know, you ask if there was some cross contamination why weren't more people talking about their methadone making them sick? Well during that time people were dropping like flies from methadone. Of course the drs all said it was from an over dose. I didn't over dose. In fact my dose was very low. I know how crazy this sounds believe me I do.. Had the medics not mentioned strychnine to me when I had that seizure, I NEVER would have even thought to look it up!
I'm not trying to say that these pharmaceutical co. Are trying to poison US, but this was all around the same time they had all the recalls on 'msCONTIN, IT morphine, oxycodone oxymorphone. All of these were recalled from several different manufacturers. How does that happen? The pharmaceutical co. Said the recall was cuz the tablets were " oversized" They WEREN'T!!! I saw them! This is just such a mystery to me and I was so so sick. Oh also my pain drs does UAs on everyone every three month's. My UA's cams up positive on almost EVERYTHING they checked for. Methamphetamine, amphetamines, (I don't know the diff) valium, thc, morphine, oxycodone, something that starts with a b, Bupa+++++++ something, PvP and dvron don't know that one either. Thankfully my DRs has known me for many years and knew this wasn't possible. He kind of wrote it off to my kidneys being so damaged during that time, but we didn't it yet.... I'm just really confused by all of this. From all the recalls in the US, to the seizureS I had, to the UAs being so OFF! I've just not gotten a good enough explanation to be content and let it go. I know the new OXYCONTIN is making so many people super sick, oh never mind, I won't say more. I know this post sounds crazy. Lol But I'm not. I just can't let it go until I can't find better answers. Any thoughts? Thank you for you response Michelle, oh and what is the name of the bladder disease you have?
Thank you
Sharon
It seems that alot of Chemists don't want to stock the generics nor do they even want to hear about them. I have been coping attitude from a few pharmacies, they think that just because u want generics, u must b abusing them. I did find one but I had to hand in the script first before they would even order pills and this is a pharmacy that I have used heaps of times! I pick my 80's n 40's tomorrow.
Hey Sharon, you've had a rough time by the sounds of it, do you live in Aus or US? Just asking as meds are a bit different depending on who makes thrm & what type each country has, the oxycontins the same & prob ms contin too. Ive always had allergies to different medications, the worst was Tramadol-they gave it to me after i had a hysterectomy & was on a pca pethadine pump. I went into a major tonic clonic seizure, tore open the surgical wound & had bruises everywhere from hitting the sides of the bed. I was out of it for a couple of days after that, & scared the s*** out of the doctors so much they banned its use in that hospital. It sounds to me as though the medications your saying made you sick & have reations to, maybe did the same as Purdue & changed the formula but didnt bother to divulge this to the public. The only reason they did with oxycontin was probably as it was such a high profile, talked about med. the new formula of oxycontin is made out of a scilican- sound unbelievable to you that they can do that? It doesnt metabolise & i dont see how it can be good for anyone to be swallowing, i couldnt imagine any doctors agreeing with a patient that liked to squeeze out a few bits of silican from Bunnings & swallowing that everyday! They say its safe & a special kind of silican but i beg to differ..... Im very careful about what i put into my body & just because a doctor tells you to a medication, doesnt mean you should. When I was first diagnosed with EC-very rare, their was a trial medication that would be inj'ed. through a catheter into the bladder. Its called DMSO & its a solvent made from a derivitive from wood & chemicals. Before I got sick, I trained racehorses & DMSO was an old remedy for shin soreness/splints, I never used it but knew others that did. We were told never to get it on your skin, to wear gloves & a mask if in closed area as its very toxic to the liver (hence, why i never used it on my horses). The vets know this, but the doctors prescribing this treatment didnt, they tend to believe that whatever the pharmaceutical companies make is going to be safe. I didnt have the treatment, but a couple of people i used to talk to on the internet did & it destroyed their livers. Another treatment for EC was hydrolisation -expanding the bladder with saline through a catheter much like filling a balloon with water, I had this done & ended up in hospital hemmoraging for 2 weeks. The other recommendation was removing the bladder, well that worked really well for those who had it done-they died within a year or so after the disease spread to their kidneys & other organs. My advice for anyone who is sick or injured, do your research- many doctors hate it, but its your body & your life. There are many wonderful life saving treatments for disease & injuries available, just make sure your fully informed of the risks (if any) & how often they've been used & been successful- esp. when your dealing with something rare or new trial/new treatment/medications. I hope that helps you a bit Sharon, feel free to ask about anything you want to know, happy to help if i can. Thanx John D, my pharmacist told me a few days ago, that she had seen them in her suppliers products, & they're on the PBS now. Shes getting them in for me, so I should have them when i get my next script. Im hoping that will settle my pain level back down again & i can go down to my previous dose after just having it increased. I have to mention, Ive been getting strange stomach pain & a weird headach (more a pressure than full on headach, hard to explain) the past couple of months. Ive tried to ignore it, but getting worse & then i read on some peoples msgs they have stomach problems & headaches. Mind you could be totally unrelated, will see what happens on the old formula, hopefully everything goes away & i can get all the work, & stuff i havnt been able to do the last few months. Cheers everyone, take care.
Hi Michelle, I was reading your post about oxycontin formulas, what really struck me was the allergic reactions you've had, and that you are so allergic to so many medications. I don't take oxycontin and never have, I did how ever take methadone for SEVER peripheral neuropathy. SOO painful. This medicine worked perfect for me for many years, in fact over 10 and I never had to increase the dosage. However in 2007 ish, I got my refill and started having all sorts of strange symptoms, one was anaphylaxictic reaction. My heart would race so fast I couldn't even keep count. At the time I didn't know it was from my medication, it took about a mo n th for me to piece it together. ( long story) Anyway once I figured it out my Dr switched me to MS CONTIN and 15 mg instant release morphine. For break thru pain. With methadone I n ever needed break thru medicine. Ever. this worked well for about 9 months, then BAM, same reactions like the methadone, it wasn't every time I took it. One day I got out the old methadone tablets and started looking at them. As it turned out the one that were making me so I'll, were slightly different. Same company, but they were just different. I also had noticed that, the new methadone tablets didn't dissolve in my mouth the minute my saliva touched them. In fact I did an experiment, in water, the ones that were making me sick, didn't metabolize at all! Then I got out the 'MSCONTIN, I looked at them too, The ones that didn't make me sick were a dark olive green, the one that made FEEL I'll were sort of a light grey green. The other thing I noticed was the ones that made me sick, of both medications, just seem to have a dirty after taste, like just dirty,, li k e from an automotive shop. Lol So hard to explain, sounds crazy I know. It was now 2008 and all of a sudden there was a mass recall at first on instant releases morphine, made by ETHEX LABS. Turns out, that what the 15 mgs were. They would make my stomach and kidneys hurt so bad I would drop to my knees. Of course I had quit taking them. Before the recall. So now I was put on a pain patch.
Then a month went by, and there was a recall on the MS CONTIN 30mg by several different manufacturers, mine was made by ENDO, made me so so sick, breathing heart stomach, withdrawal, all the symptoms, I've seen so many others describe about the new oxycontin formula.. I tell you this, because you are the only other person I've seen mention the anaphylaxis.
Have you always been allergic to medicines, or did it just start in the last few years? I'm wondering besides the new formula, for oxycontin, if there isn't some type of cross contamination going on with other medicines. I dunno, I've been trying to figure this out for a long time now. Any thoughts or ideas or things you've experienced and want to share, I love to hear your feelings about this. didn't mean for this to be so long. Lol
Take care,
Sharon
Michelle, I got my first Oxycodone Sandoz today. The pharmacy got them in stock Monday. As mentioned in other posts and links some pharmacies will be refusing to stock the product however Chemist warehouse (which has them on their website) will order them in for you if you produce a script and ask. Other than that find a pharmacist that stocks them. The pharmacy I used had a full range. I am really looking forward to hopefully a longer duration and more effectiveness. I am lucky to get 8 -9 hours out of an OP.
Let me know how you go. Would be interested to hear if they helped you.
Verwon, you're wrong about this medication!! The formulation of oxycontin which is now Oxycontin OP, has changed under the guise of being tamper resistant. This new formula release just happened to coincide with Purdue's ending of their patent, which means other companies are finally able to make generic options. Purdue's reformulation gives them a new patent, & another 10-20 years of no competition for them in the US, as they were able to convince government not to allow generic brands of the old formulation, to stop abuse of this drug. This has backfired, as many junkies have found a way to tamper with the new formulation, & its much more dangerous than what they did with the old formula. The genuine patients, relying on this medication to reduce horrendous pain & give them some quality of life, are having many problems with the new formula. These range from headaches, stomach/GI problems to reduced pain control & withdrawal symptoms. The new formulation is made from a type of polymer, that when wet becomes a sticky, gooey mess. The medication is mixed into the polymer, so if their is some undigested tablet in patients stool, they're not getting the full dose of their medication. I am one person that is having problems with this. Ive been on this medication for many years, as the main treatment for a rare, painful disease, that has no real treatment or cure beyond treating the pain. My dose has been stable for about 4 years, but after starting on the new formula my pain has increased a lot, & suffering for the last 6 months or so, I finally agreed with my doctors advice to increase my dose. Im one of the patients that can't just change to another medication, as Im very allergic to other medications. Ive had a range of reactions ranging from hives/rash to full blown seizures & anaphylaxis, so this puts me in a hard position. Im lucky though, as I live in Australia & our government understands their is a need for the old formulation, so generic versions of this have been approved & will be in pharmacies soon. Purdue- the manufacturer & Mundipharma- the Australian distributor, have tried to stop this happening by appealing to our government as they did in the US, but unlike the US our government studies have shown them the need of patients is more important. For those people like Mr Jonathon & JDC's fathers, the only thing you can do is appeal to your government. Put together a group to do petitions & gather all the records/evidence of what this is doing to the patients who this medication is intended for. It would help you to get doctors & pain specialists to back you up with their findings. The government are the ones who have the power to change this, Purdue have pushed for the legislation banning generic or their own previous formulation, they know what problems people are having, but even if they wanted to they cant distribute the old formula in the US. Good luck, I hope the doctors can help your fathers & anyone who is in distress from the change of this medication.
Dude your obviously not from australia we are getting the original OxyContin back in the 10mg 15mg 20mg 40mg 80mg generic version made by Sandoz and a few other generics are hitting the shelfs very soon. the OxyContin reformfoulated sucks with the "op 80" imprint on them the generics coming out are exactly the same formula as the original OxyContin tablets imprinted with for eg "oc 80" they will be hitting shelves here in Australia between October and December! My doctor has swapped me to MS Contin 100mg tablets twice a day 2x oxynorm 20mg instant release oxycodone capsules with no apap at all and 2x 8mg dilaudid/hydromorphone tablets a day for breakthrough pain and Valium 5mg for back spasm my dr has told me she will switch me back to OxyContin when they like the old ones again! And dude we don't have opana aka oxymorphone here in Australia it's not here yet but atleast we are not stuck with these horrible OxyContin reformulated op imprinted ones like you in the us and other parts of the world they have terrible side effects and don't work properly at all they do not get metabolised in the human body like the old forlmula
Dude, we're in Australia & will have a generic form of original formula unlike the US
Oxy never coming back. Only original formula out there is the opanna which is made by impax global pharmaceutical it's generic that's why it's still made as orginal. So ask for oxymophone and 20 is like a Oxy 10 n a 40mg is like a Oxy 80 really helps but very addictive I do not advise abuse because you will get lost
Cheers John D appreciate the info, I could go hunting for it myself but just haven't had time. The time I do have spare, is generally when Im buggered & can hardly move because of pain, the last thing i feel like doing is chasing up on all this. I just hope after all this, that my pain increase was the change of formula, not just a coincidence (that its really me getting worse, thats causing the pain spike) To see if I have more damage & spread of disease, I have to have a biopsy & last biopsy I haemorrhaged, so Im in no hurry to do another one. Take care people.
Michelle, I had an e-mail back from PBS with that exact concern. As you mentioned the whole idea generally for generic is to have a cheaper option. The e-mail was not very informative. As mentioned in previous e-mail PBS only takes on new medications April, August and December. I know Sandoz could not get stock at that stage from over seas (which is where they manufacture them). Also the patent only just expired 1 week prior. Therefore Sandoz or any other company could not even talk about it until after this period. It may not of been enough time. All of these could of been contributing factors.
In the case of Oxycontin OP and Oxycodone Sandoz they are quite different products as you know. So who knows if this is also a factor.
Yes there is an 80mg. Strengths as far as I can see on that leaflet link are as follows: 5, 10, 20, 40, 80.
Thanx John D, thats great info about the generic OC, are they making 80mg? Will it be added to PBS at some point, I thought that was one of the reasons generic meds are made (to lower prices & not be so costly on the Aussie deficit providing PBS) I actually just saw my doc this morning, & finally relented to increase my dose. Im just struggling to control the pain atm, so hopefully the extra medication will settle it enough to get me through till the generics in store at my pharmacy. Thanx Dox, the Jurista sounds like a good option to consider. How is it conversion wise, getting the correct dosage? How long has it been on prescription for? Do you know if there's been problems for people with side effects/allergies? Its good to finally see things will have a good outcome in regards to choices in medication. Im in Australia Dox. Thoughts & well wishes to your husband Katherine, I hope the chemo works for him & doesn't effect him to badly, he sounds like a real fighter. Take care everyone.
I forgot to post a link to the "leaflet" that comes with the Generic Oxycodone.
My pharmacist said it should be around $68 a script. The media contact I have been talking with spoke to Sandoz after me to confirm I was correct. He said he believes you should be able to get the price a little cheaper depending where you go. Also I asked how long until the suppliers will have the medication for the pharmacies, he answered with "a couple days max".
It seems Dox has cast doubt into most my posts even though they normally come with a link to some supporting evidence. The link for the Leaflet has Sandoz contact number call if in doubt. Might be a little silly for everyone to call though.
As for a private script, you don't need anything different from the doctor, you just need to inform the pharmacist of your intention and they will either order it for you. Or soon stock it. If your doctor does not want you to use Generics they can tick a box not allowing this.
This will be my last post as the question is resolved. Good luck to you all. I know I am looking forward to some real pain relief that will last the appropriate duration :D
Thanks Michelle I appreciate your apology here is what I have tried with my gp he is a great gp and will not prescribe to addicts he switched me to MS Contin then I went to a much better one it is called jurista it is hydromorphone as the active ingredient the good thing about the jurista is that you take it once every 24 hours it is strong like oxycodone a bit stronger so you can give that ago I will get the prices and post for the generic brands of OxyContin on here for you guys also I'm in Australia don't know about you guys
Michelle Sandoz has (as of the 28th of August) released a generic Version oxycontin. Sizes exclude 30mg. They are also not supported by PBS and are private script.
I have confirmed that with Sandoz customer support and they said that suppliers should have stock by the end of the week.
Im glad to be able to give you a different point of view Katherine, & i totally understand where your coming from. My GP (a great doctor & a great guy, who ive had since i was a teen) is an addictions specialist. When i go to appointments the waiting rooms full of addicts trying to get clean, some are really trying, others are getting clean to keep themselves out of jail, so i see it all the time. I think thats one of the biggest representations, that Im a legit patient not an abuser, as he would be the first person to put a stop to abuse. The disease i have EC, (no point putting the whole name as no one knows what it is, & nothing really comes up even with google) but it involves eosinophils & causes degeneration of organs. Its in my bladder & the lining has been eaten away & is full of ulcers. I lose a lot of blood & often become blocked from huge clots that wont pass. Removing my bladder isnt an option as it spreads to other organs such as kidneys & lungs, that once damaged theres nothing they can do. Last year i had a bowel obstruction thanx to the meds, & from an operation to fix that i got MSSA that went septic & ended up with an abscess in my 2mm from my spinal cord. Once you become ill with one thing it starts to take a toll on the rest of your body ive found out, the hard way i must say lol. In all seriousness though, i was very close to death with that infection, i had months of iv antibiotics after they operated to remove the abscess. The best thing was they gave me 8 bags of blood in a transfusion, i hadnt felt so good in years after that cause im anaemic most of the time. Ive always enjoyed life but that just gave me an extra push to spend my time doing what i love, as you know it can been gone before you know it. I hope you & your husband, are able to have time to do the things you've always wanted to do & have as many special times together as you can. Dox, thats cool you apologised, everyone has bad days. It would be great if you could share the name of the medication thats working so well for you, hopefully it can help myself & others to get back on track with the pain. Cheers everyone.
Well that was very big of you Dox. Thankyou. Sounds like your doing well so far. When he first started on opiates which was not long ago, they started him with Targin and Fentanyl patches. When that didn't work they began with the full Oxycontin. I think that is the procedure they follow with everyone. His memory is terrible and the other day he fell asleep in the doctors chair while we were talking. I had to clap my hands in front of him and say "wake up!" He's been fighting this for 5 yrs but last MRI, MRSpectroscopy showed change of grade and growth. He did his radiation after debulking surgery 5 yrs ago, so we gonna have a go with Chemotherapy now. That's gonna be a joy. You know, I just stumbled on this forum when I was doing some research on this new medication he had been put on and I've got to say I'm glad I did. It's been informative. Even though my situation is very different to yours and others (hope I'm not whinging to much. Only kidding) sometimes it can be therapeutic to converse with total strangers. In my job we must avoid confrontation and try to defuse any situation, and I've taken some crap over the years, so I guess I've learned to give as good as I get. But when something like this happens to you it just leaves a big question mark hanging over your head. So thankyou again for the apology it meant a lot and I must apologize for my response, it was uncalled for, and remember everyone is entitled to an opinion, good bad or indifferent. Here's hoping the doctors are smart enough to work it out, for everyone that is. Go well.
I am sorry if I came across in a bad manner I didn't mean to suck it up pain wise at all I feel where you guys are coming from and know how it feels I will help you guys and share as much information with you's as you guys need my apologies but I know basically all the opioid/narcotic available and I can tell you how good they are and how crap they are also I can assure you that john d is a troll he is lying there will be no OxyContin generic forms coming out at all i know that for a fact 100% I have now switched medications again to another and it's working brilliant I haven't been feeling like this with my pain level so low since I started the normal old OxyContin but this new meds knock the old OxyContin out of the park and work a treat I love the way I can function now on the new OxyContin reformulated I couldn't get out of bed untill I had my oxy and a breakthrough med #love the way I feel I can function :) so sorry if I came accoss wrong in my last post
Dox, so what is your new long acting med that works so well? I would love to know. I need something that works, that's for sure.
