A friend gave me this small white, round sleeping pill with an X and two lines on the top and bottom of the X. I was told to put it under your tongue instead of swallowing it, and let it dissolve. What are these pills called and how intense are they for a sleep aid?

sounds like a benzdiazepine, probably, Xanax. typically these are used for anxiety issues. The problem with these class of meds is they are highly addicting, and very rapidly absorbed into the blood stream. It is also known to cause impairment and confusion. They are only recommended for short-term use.
