What Is Stronger Dilaudid Or Oxycontin 40 Mg? (Page 3)
(Newest replies first)

I have been on Dilaudid for over 2 years now and I can't seem to get off of it. I'm under a doctor's care, but anyone who is on it knows it's very addicting! I think like everybody else, it's no good if you take it orally. It's only effective other ways. I always run out of Dilaudid before my prescription is ready to refill and recently I filled a script for oxycontin 40 mg to see if they could replace my 4 mg Dilaudid. However, I took 1/2 of a 40 mg. and felt nothing. An hour later I took my 4 mg Dilaudid and it seems to have worked. But they are very short lived, that's why for chronic pain they like to give these stupid time release pain pills. How many mg.'s does equal the same amount of Dilaudid? I also would like to know if anyone has ever tapered off of Dilaudid? You get really sick when you try to get off of it, really intense vomiting and stomach pain that lasts forever. I have never stuck it out, I always end up in the emergency room. All they do is give me a pain shot of Dilaudid and a prescription for it as well and send me home. They think there is something wrong with something else. I have even tried to tell them but they either don't want to get involved because I'm under a Dr.'s care or they are just stupid. I hope someone has the best kicking advice, I'd rather be straight or just be one of those once in a while users (RIGHT)!!!

Thank you Chris.
So many people think that because you are on medication for pain, that your and addict, or are looking for sympathy. Worst part is they just think you want to be on pain meds so you need not work or you just want more pills. I myself don't like to say this but there are times that I wished that these people had my issue's or yours. Just because they can't see the problem, doesn't mean it doesn't exist. You don't normally hear from someone if they can see "US" on the outside where supposedly the pain should be. I injured my back yrs. ago, I also have knee issue's. Many people say well go for therapy "get off of the pills". Guess what, I went to Therapy and I plateaued, they could do no more for me. Sure I might do things one day, however when nobody see's me, its' because I am in bed with my pills and the heating pad on both my back and knees! People have to start taking a look at the bodies inside, people don't just feel pain outside so it is visible. It has been proven that there are so many people with under the skin problems than outside. So c'mon people, we would certainly love to be you, but we have tried many ways to stop pain, it didn't work. PLEASE - Get with the program! Quit judging people, this include's those who are injured along with Race's of People! You can not change the inside's of people's pain, and NO we do not like to have to take pain killer's all of the time. We would love nothing more than to be NORMAL!! We have lost the perception of Normal because Physician's can not help us so here we are, again don't talk about us just because you have nothing more to talk about. Thank you!

You could try methadone or suboxone, but i think methadone is better.

I should be dead. I fell 2700 feet without an inflated parachute and landed/crashed on the cold Colorado ground, no bouncing, no bushes, no anything to help break the fall, just me and the ground and as you can imagine, a whole lot of pain and a whole lot of injuries. How I'm alive will forever remain a mystery. I have been reading everyone's stories here and am shocked to not have ran into any suggestions like the one I'm about to make yet. First though let me say my heart goes out to all of us who suffer or have suffered from intense, consistent pain; it impacts every aspect of life and until one goes through it, yes, they will never understand just how much it really does and how much those changes are typically for the worse. I was on an onslaught of pain meds after my fall and must say I agree with some previous comments; opiates sucks the life out of people. They made me a shadow of my former self and made me not care to get myself back either. When I tapered off of my daily doses of 120mg of oxycontin, 4 mg Dilaudid and 75 mg of oxycodone it was miserable and lengthy but worth the several months and many sleepless nights. As for tapering off, I tapered the contins and Dilaudids and used the codones to lessen the skin crawling on your body feeling when it became unbearable only. I did it on my own with my last (by choice) month of scripts from pain management which I stretched to almost three months while tapering down and finally off. I found the coding w/d the least bad do made my final cut when I was down to 3 a day and off the others. Still had w/d's but they were bearable and lasted about three days. The mental w/d's lasted months more and it was about 4 months until my energy levels got back to normal. All that aside, HERE IS A SUGGESTION FOR PAIN RELIEF: this might sound crazy, before I had chronic pain honestly I thought it was just an excuse made by people who use it but turns out it's not, it works better than all those pills combined did for me...consume marijuana. Works for some, may not for some, but it you're one of us lucky ones it works for, it's amazing how effective it is and how many less negative effects it has on you and your life. Most pain management doctors won't prescribe it and will actually required you don't smoke it because they are federally regulated. But I tell you it works amazingly for those that it works for and it has changed my life, my outlook, my will, my smile, every aspect of my life, for the better.

Mary,

It's been a couple of weeks since your last post how did you make out at your follow up appt. for ua levels ?? Hope things turned out in your favor... No one should live with that fear and constant stress in there life's especially in addition to dealing with a chronic pain issue.

Anyone having problems paying cash for opiate meds must have alot of loot because its expensive BUT I found that the best (for me) discount was at Walgreens with AAA to reduce the cost of the Vicodin [yellow or blue depending on brand] [it's been years since been on them fogot the mg]
If I remember correctly it was $80 for 120 of them but with the AAA it was below $40 big deal when you are waiting on Comp.
ALSO, SHOP AROUND! DIFFERENT PHARMACIES and DIFFERENT AREAS ALSO HAVE DIFFERENT PRICES!
Walmart is also a cheap spot as well [the wait sucks tho].
Good Luck and always bargain shop your meds. Just because the price is different doesn't mean the med is less effective for pain meds AS FAR AS I PERSONALLY BELIEVE. [the only difference is who makes it and that is usually a personal preference] even tho my husband would dispute that. He claims there is a difference between CVS & WALGREENS for the Perc 30s he thinks CVS has the better ones with the V on it.
Who knows everyone's different physically and psychologically.
GOOD LUCK FELLOW PAIN SUFFERERS

Narcotics pain relief medication are addictive and even extend use of low dosages can cause discomfort when you stop using. Taking these meds at high doses causes addiction, and I can attest that after taking over 60 mg of Oxycontin daily for more than a month, getting off of them was very difficult and extremely stressful to both my body and emotional state! Happy that I did. Unfortunately, because the severe pain condition persist, l am dealing with this awful dilemma of balancing periods of pain relief by using narcotics, then strong steroids anti-inflammatory, and using lesser pain reliever to take the edge off while I have lesser withdrawal symptoms. I have the option of having a third surgery in three years to offset the pain, for which I'm thankful. Unfortunately managing severe chronic pain, for me, has been, has also been a process of struggling with addiction and a diminished quality of life.

I took the duragesic patch and nearly died because it made me have suicidal thoughts, about the pain it. Didn't help at all. As everyone has posted if you truly are in chronic pain not every med works for all because of how different our bodies are.

Hi there! I myself very painfully caused back issue's. Nothing has what you really call "I'm done". When Physicians' give you an apparently stronger med that should help, then give you a break through med to see if that worked. So there is dilaudid,
and oxycodone from break through medication. Prior to taking anything I was fine,
not great b/c I have other issue's as well, I don't want to bore you with a handwritten Novel! The unfortunate part is please tell me how/what you can give me
so that I don't need these, but "yes" I do need help. So at times they will give you
Suboxone. Myself I have never taken, I have heard so many horror stories about Suboxone. From what I have received on medication such as "Suboxone" is apparently another worse drug used yet! What are you supposed to do? Sign myself into the Physcotic Ward and suffer in there. Really they can't help you much unless you Physician give's them an okay on what to use. So again as mentioned you use the Suboxone. Your back to square One! I really don't get it. A Physician obviously knows about Suboxone so really why don't they give you an anti-inflammation medication to help you. It's probably not the best but at least with something like this, I don't think your going to get addicted to. I don't know how you feel about this however as said, this is something that "yes" it will help with pain to a degree, and again, I don't think you will get addicted to them. I should hope not. Honestly the only thing I can say is, keep strong, take this anti-flammatory. If others you know who are on something like an 80mg. OxyContin please whatever you do, don't ask for one. As well I only think use the anti-inflamaory and it will work Stay away from those you know what they do, please get into that positive note keep thinking positive!! Tell yourself, "I can do this" I know I YES YOU CAN! and by thinking positive, that so WONDERFUL PERSON will NOT change her mind as she so says. Give your Dr'sname so that WONDERFUL, LOVING PERSON will understand just "YES" she did it!.

Dilaudid is about 6x stronger than morphine, so you are in the ballpark. I was on 15mg morphine which lost effectiveness. Dr. Switched me to 4mg-8 dilaudid twice day. 4 did nothing, but ive been having success with 8 for about 6 months now. Always take it as directed or you'll probably end up with addiction.

Face it. You're hooked on legal heroin. Methadone treatment is usually the way to go. I'm surprised your doctor hasn't discussed it but if you really, really want to get off it, bring it up to him/her.

I was on fentanyl for 4-5 years. Yes it's true that there is no more pain, but.. Let me tell you this!! Along with the no pain, amazing pain relief, it comes with a very large price!!! What I'm saying is, the fentanyl patches may take 90-100% of the pain away BUT.... It also takes your life away too!! It takes your feelings away, your memories, your compassion and empathy as well!! Not only does it take pain away and makes you feel numb pain free, it also freezes your brain too, you become numb to everything around you. You basically turn into a completely different person. You yourself will not notice, in fact you honestly feel great, No pain and No worries and time disappears forever. So please, please, to anyone out there who is thinking of going on the fentanyl patch, don't!!! You will regret it and loose your life in the end. Coming off the patch is a living hell!! The w/d is the the worst feeling you will go through. Honestly if I can help one person out there, by sharing my experience, then it was worth it!!! Please listen to me or even talk to anyone who has been on fentanyl patches for chronic pain. Chronic pain is a horrible thing to live with, I know!! The truth is we'll always have a bit of pain to live with, But.... That's what makes us real and keeps our feelings in check. Without any pain are we real at all?? Take care everyone, life is too short and so precious!!!

Who here is an MD or Do?! Probably no one, so I'd suggest talking to a real and certified physician instead of taking medical advice from these pain management patients! See drug warnings for all these narcs and the second sentence all read CAN CAUSE RESPIRATORY DISTRESS or DEATH! It's only your LIFE in jeopardy!

I totally agree with you. They put you on these meds but when you run out of them it's almost impossible to get refills or they jack up the price where the mess are untouchable

Optima - I just read your post and even though it's a old post, I was just wondering if you were able to have the much needed surgeries? I can't even imagine the pain and suffering you have had to go through, from physical pain, being rejected for the surgeries, phycological and emotional pain, fighting with workers comp, insurance companies, and much more I'm sure. I'm also a chronic pain patient but nothing compared to yours. It's absolutely horrible what you have had to go through especially being denied your right to have the needed surgeries! It's not your fault that you have to take pain medications. Your pain must be severe. I also agree that insurance companies are just in it for the $$$$. I'm sure most people would agree to that unless they work for them. They just keep getting richer by the minute from everyone paying the high premiums. Your post really touched me, meaning that it only takes one accident to change a persons life forever! It's also a shame your personal life was dramatically affected too. I just want to say that I'm hoping the best for you and take good care of yourself. God bless you!! Terry
