What Is Stronger Dilaudid Or Oxycontin 40 Mg? (Page 27)
UpdatedI have been on Dilaudid for over 2 years now and I can't seem to get off of it. I'm under a doctor's care, but anyone who is on it knows it's very addicting! I think like everybody else, it's no good if you take it orally. It's only effective other ways. I always run out of Dilaudid before my prescription is ready to refill and recently I filled a script for oxycontin 40 mg to see if they could replace my 4 mg Dilaudid. However, I took 1/2 of a 40 mg. and felt nothing. An hour later I took my 4 mg Dilaudid and it seems to have worked. But they are very short lived, that's why for chronic pain they like to give these stupid time release pain pills. How many mg.'s does equal the same amount of Dilaudid? I also would like to know if anyone has ever tapered off of Dilaudid? You get really sick when you try to get off of it, really intense vomiting and stomach pain that lasts forever. I have never stuck it out, I always end up in the emergency room. All they do is give me a pain shot of Dilaudid and a prescription for it as well and send me home. They think there is something wrong with something else. I have even tried to tell them but they either don't want to get involved because I'm under a Dr.'s care or they are just stupid. I hope someone has the best kicking advice, I'd rather be straight or just be one of those once in a while users (RIGHT)!!!
I know this is an older thread ,so I was wondering how the new changes of all the long acting opiates working for you . I am now back in he'll ,the changes have given me many stomach aches and they only work half as well.I am back to wanting to give up again .i was a different person when I was on original oxycontin er ,I had almost no pain and it gave me energy ,the new ones make me so tired and very little pain relief .i am 55 and assure everyone I do not abuse any drugs.
You should try Kratom. It is an all natural medicine from the Earth. I believe in herbs. I have severe back pain, neck pain and leg pain, and I went through withdrawals from pain medicine cuz I ran out of my meds. The Kratom lasts for 6 hours and it's good for you, not just with pain but depression and diabetes. Read up on it. I started it and I have two sources that I purchase from. I have lost weight. It gives you energy. I tell you this, you wont go through withdrawals. Best advice is read up on it and find a good place to purchase it from.
Man... I almost answered this when I realized that it’s from about 10 years ago.... but while I’m here... my 2 cents for everyone else: 40mg oxycodone, according to most charts I’ve seen (many seem to vary a bit) works out to be around 15mg hydromorphone. Remember, of course, that you MUST compare ORAL to ORAL, IV to IV... or you run the risk of shocking the life out of yourself (but only for that last little bit there). Not funny. Here are a few other things I’ve slowly and reluctantly learned over my chronic pain career:
a) This s*** is NOT for chronic pain. Chronic pain is best (imo) handled with psychology, education, meditation... any kind of stress reduction, coupled with the acceptance that this just might be as good as it gets.
b) If you attempt to make your pain “go away” with opiates, you are beating a dead horse. The gold standard for pain relief is about... like... 30% from almost any drug out there. The only 100% option involves messy stuff like not breathing, hanging, etc.
c) If you are truly looking for a way to change your life, opiates are absolutely one of the answers but the costs far outweigh the benefits since the benefits are so few. Sick, tired, still as sore after you plateau, marital and other psychosocial issues change for the worse. Weight loss, poor nutrient uptake... you name it.
Narcotics are for acute pain. Appendix? Thanks. Broken arm? Sure ... but “This back has and always will hurt”? No way. It does not work. In two weeks you’re used to the [kinda s***ty] feeling and you need to go ask the man for more. And that ain’t right. Learning how to cope and live with your pain is possible, albeit difficult.
It is NOT as difficult as putting the pieces back together after your life explodes. If I’m going to take a dependence-causing, addictive and dangerous drug, it had better be one I enjoy... like alcohol or nicotine. There are, as you know, illegal compounds that work just nicely for pain and are far less dangerous than opium based products.
Also read, read, read ... Ted talks are great for understanding pain in a way that your doctor may not even have considered. My time’s up but I hope I helped ten years after the post. LOL
Oh brother. I feel your pain. I have a high pain tolerance as well but it’s the constant day after day of it that begins to crack the foundation. I absolutely love it when I break a bone like a toe... right now I’m walking around on a sprained ankle and I couldn’t give two s***s. It mitigates the neuropathy and I know it will go away... which brings me to my point. I’ve recently realized that, as tough men, we can take the pain... it’s the destruction that comes along with it that rips your life up. Pain meds are, if not addiction-causing, at best dependence-causing. Friends do not get it. Wives and husbands grow tired of the radically changed lifestyle. Not working puts you in a social bubble. I stopped trying to wrestle the pain long ago and am now working on the suffering, which occurs in the head rather than at the point of injury. I’m with you though, brother. It’s a tough row to hoe. It sounds to me as though your pain is always going to be there. Have you tried a good psychologist or pain-specific clinic that may help you learn to accept and cope? I hope you’re still well and I hope that this has helped at least a bit. You are certainly not alone.
I take oxycodone with tylenol 10/325, my insurance did not want to pay good at all for the yellow colored, which helped with less side effects! My pharmacist, told me, you need to get your doctor to write just oxycodone 10mg. Way cheaper, little tiny pink tablet, then take generic Tylenol with it!
I really enjoyed reading your post. It's refreshing to read the opinion of someone who has the capability to articulate a response with both knowledge and understanding on this topic. I believe that unless you have been dealing with the pain, and have had the proverbial ball n' chain of a prescription that you depend on EVERY DAY, your opinion is irrelevant. Stereotypes are dangerous and so is ignorance. Nobody wants to be an addict. With this opioid crisis that is killing people in record numbers, doctors are reluctant to prescribe it because the word oxy has become almost a swear word. Taboo. So for those of us who depend on narcotics for pain relief, not to feel high, this is a crisis. Also an opportunity for drug dealers to put lethal substances on the street, readily available with no Rx needed. Leaving people vulnerable and endangering lives. It's much harder to go to a doctor or a hospital seeking relief than it is to call up the local dope dealer with pills made with ingredients from a Chinese lab concocted in somebody's basement. I am curious to know the statistics on the monitored, regulated prescriptions of the patients under a doctors care who OD on their meds. I have taken fentanyl twice. Both times were in emergency rooms during a lumbar puncture. Doses in micro mgs. Yet I've lost friends and acquaintances by the dozens to street drugs laced with this poison. Many of these people couldn't find a doctor to legally help them live their lives without pain and suffering. They paid the ultimate price and definitely feel no pain anymore....that's now for the people who loved them to feel.
I know Medical Marijuana has proven itself helpful in place of narcotics and is not lethal. You don't have to smoke it and some places put them in capsule forms. I just wish that the FDA and DEA would make a "controlled" substance prescription for people with chronic pain.
If you get that sick when you try and kick you are taking way too much. Just the fact that you run out. HOW MUCH are you really taking, I know because I take it. I didn't know if you take too much and then run out you can't . I was taking maybe sometimes 16mg's. Way to much at once. Mine are NOT time released. I cut back to 8mg's or 4 and I have no problem. Wean back SLOW and you won't be sick.
You got that PERFECTLY right! I'll do what I have to do to be able to just TIE MY SHOES! I am a believer in what Christ did on the cross for me so I have NO fear of overdosing and dying. In fact I know in my heart it would be better than all this NON STOP PAIN. Because when I get to heaven I get a New body and I and everyone else who has accepted Him as their Savior will NEVER experience pain again. And that's for eternity! And that's a long time! So if I have a bottle of Dr. Prescribed pain meds next to me and I'm in severe pain, I'm going to take one whether it's "time" to or not! So untill u walk a mile in my shoes......u can just leave me be!!!!!
Re: OpiateTexan (# 9)
Love your comments. I have suffered with chronic pain for about 13 years now. I recently went through a knee placement surgery that did not go as well as anticipated. Therefore I had to go through a second knee surgery 6 weeks later. I'm still in a lot of pain daily and if it weren't for the pain management medications I would not survive this. Fibromyalgia makes it a lot more difficult to tolerate pain. I have people in my life that do not understand the pain I suffer so they are very nasty towards me about it. So I agree if you haven't walked in my shoes then don't talk to me about what I should or shouldn't do regarding pain management.
Re: Ty (# 3)
I was on both Dilaudid and Oxycontin for a long time. I have 4 herniated discs in my neck. I was also taking Lyrica at the sane time. I did get off all of them. I was not able to function. I wasn't able to work. I felt like a zombie. I just stopped taking them and it's hasn't easy. But I take nothing for my pain but at least I'm not living like I'm in a fog.
Re: floridadave (# 8)
YES IT WILL HELP YOU. DON'T LET ANYONE TELL YOU OTHERWISE. ALSO YOU ARE VERY LUCKY TO HAVE A DOCTOR THAT IS CONSIDERING THIS AS A WEEN...YES GO FOR IT
Re: Glad2BAlive (# 7)
Amen to that. I live in severe chronic pain. In SC drs are being pressured to not prescribe narcotics. The most they might give you is norco or tramadol, both of which are worthless. Dilaudid is what works best for me but i cant get it anymore. They give me a script for 800mg ibuprofen or aleve which is useless with my pain level. I guess they expect me to just live my life in pain staying in bed. I hate to take any meds and wouldn't if i didn't have to.
Does anyone have additional feedback regarding the efficacy of Dilaudid vs Oxycodone for chronic pain management? I realize there are several different types of pain, all requiring different levels of therapy, doses and other underlying treatment modalities. So, perhaps a more important question would be - How do the equianalgesic conversion charts compare for these two pain medications? Or, what has your personal experience been like on either one or both Dilaudid/Oxycodone?
If you build a tolerance to Dilaudid, does the availability of Oxycodone's larger dosage range (5mg - 80mg+) allow for greater flexibility in pain management vs Dilaudid's 2-8mg dosage range?
Just interested in reading other patient's thoughts and feelings on this matter...
Re: David (# 534)
I personally hated dilauded for the amount of pain that I am in. I was on 20 mg oxycodone 3 times a day then the dr told me that he was going to put me on 8 mg dilauded 3 times a day to replace it he said it was suppose to be 10 times stronger (I'm not sure who told him that!). Now it started out with alternating with my oxycodone and it worked wonders. So I decided to give the dilauded only a try for 2 months. Boy that was the biggest mistake I could make. Dilauded seems to me and this is my personal thoughts, short acting for pain. I went right back on the oxycodone. I'd rather have a extended release medication in combo with the oxycodone which is what they have me on. Good luck. I'm not sure if my thoughts help any.
I've been on oxycodone 30mg for 9 years now from a pain clinic. I have a few illnesses and a spinal surgery coming up. I'm also on 50mg Fentanyl patch for about the same amount of time I've been on the oxycodone. Once you start taking more of your medicine and run out before your refill comes for the next month? You need to talk to your Doctor immediately about this. Don't do this alone. You could seriously go into a coma or even worse die! This is a HUGE reason the laws of people on Narcotics and Doctors prescribing narcotics is getting harder on those who suffer. The Dr.'s have to know what's happening to you so they can adjust your meds accordingly. I was taking my Fentanyl patch has prescribed one every 48 hours. I also noticed if I forgot to replace my patch and it slipped my mind to put a new one on? I'd go into the most horrific withdrawals. Then I read more and more about the bad side effects of the Fentanyl patch and all the people dying using this drug. Those on the Fentanyl patch? The death poll got higher & higher! So I wanted to wean off both the oxycodone and the Fentanyl patch!. It was much easier than I thought it would be. However, this does take time to wean off. I did the same thing with both my meds. Each week I would go down another half a pill. With the Fentanyl patch, I would start placing a new one on every 3 days. I kept a journal on everything I did so I knew exactly what side to place the new patch on my body when it came time to change the patch and I always kept the old patch on when I'd place the new one on. Before I knew it I went from taking 15 Fentanyl patches a month down to 5 a month! Same with Oxycodone. I went from taking 6 per-day down to 2 1/2 per-day! Yes, my pain is very bad. But I do only what I can do and limit myself to what I can do. One day I may feel like doing more than another day. It's hard to live in pain 24/7. But these medications are strong.
If you say 40mg oxycodone didn't do anything for you? This tells me your body is used to a lot more narcotic. The Dilaudid narcotics? Is strong medicine. I'm given that at the E.R. when I land up in their for breaking a bone! If you don't tell your Dr. that you're taking more then you should of the narcotics your on? Then if you ever get into a car accident or something serious that brought you to the E.R.? Say you had to have emergency surgery? They put you under the anesthesia medicine to knock you out. They would go by what your doctor prescribes for you with narcotics. Then you may not go under has quickly for the surgery or even worse they give less anesthesia medicine not knowing you've been taking more then you should of the narcotic? This is why it's so important to always discuss with your Dr. how much you're taking with the narcotic your on. He/she can tell you to go to a pain clinic where everything is being monitored and you will be more under control for what you need to cover your pain! I've seen what this can do to you by taking more than you should? You could go into a coma or-or suddenly have a hard time breathing and not be able to breathe at all! These narcotics are very dangerous to play around with period. To many people are taking way more then they should and this is why it's not any longer up to the Dr. to give out narcotics it's the Government now who tells the Dr.'s what they can and can't do. So many people with horrendous pain are suffering because of people who take way more for a euphoria feeling than for the actual pain in itself! My advice Bottom Line? Talk with your Doctor at once! God Bless You and please do the right thing.
I understand, I am on the fentanyl patch, and roxicet, but are you looking for the high? Or to help chronic pain? If you are going through your prescription before your time is up, you may be addicted! Or depending what the dr. gives you? With diluadid pills, you will not get the euphoria. But to me sounds like you may really be getting hooked! I’m here if you need to talk.
Re: Coco (# 522)
I totally agree with you on the Kratom. I myself had spinal fusion with hardware. They put me on fentanyl and I was a mess. Wasn't myself and angry all the time. A year ago I took off the patch and picked up Kratom. Wow. I'm glad I did. I take green Malay with white maeng da and I'm out of pain for 24 hours. Totally awesome.
I was on Dilauded for over a year; three months interviencely and they when I left the hospital I had two liquid relills. When I got down to the last bottle, I was really deeply depressed. Physcology, it was a pain in the ass (actually in my head). It took about three months to stop thinking about. I’m. OK now but truth be told sometimes I wish I had some around. And this post is two years after I stop!
Doctors do not listen. A tip to the wise if you are on medicare. Read your statement after a visit to your family dr. Mine said based on a 25 minute interaction. I waited 45 minutes in a closed room last time after arriving 15 minutes early. She came in and spent 9 minutes typing into the computer asking the same ?s I had been asked when a aid weighed and took my blood pressure. I had a quick list of ?s I wanted to ask. It was obvious she wasn't listening and I called her out on it. Boy did her personality come through. She was walking out the door after I asked if next time I should just turn up 1 hour past my scheduled appointment. It happens every time and I said so since I was having problems and all she wanted to do was duplicate stats in the computer. Her explanation was she was spending so much time with other patients answering their ?s that she was running way behind and had to catch up when she reached me! She cheated medicare big time. Anyone else ever have this happen? They should be reported. I asked to see a different dr. in the same office next time even though I have seen her for 8 years. But boy could she talk on about her kid to anyone that would listen!
