Can certain over the counter medications or prescription medications cause a false positive for Methamphetamine in a blood test?

I'm not sure if the drugs you mentioned will cause a false positive for meth or anything else hopefully the doctor (Dr John) who visits this forum frequently will see your post in time an provide you with better information but I do know for a fact that zantac aka ranitidine will definitely give you a false positive for meth an I think most other heartburn medicines will give false positives as well besides like tums or something but just don't take anything for heartburn whether it's prescription or over the counter sorry I couldn't answer all your questions but good luck on your test.

Polymyxcin/Trimethopr. 4 X day..

I have to drug test tomorrow morning for my job...will any of these prescriptions show up false for methamphetamine..amphetamines..opiates..

I have less than 24hours to clean my system.. no money..husband just got locked up

Stacey, Perhaps the only thing you can do in this situation is to stop the nasal spray/inhaler, and not take and ranitidine, for at least 4 or 5 days prior to the test.

Well I finally got a copy of my labs from my Dr. who dropped me for testing pos. for methamphetamine. The test was a LC/MS/MS. It shows a confirmed for methamphetamine and d-methamphetamine. (?) The level for the methamphetamine was 2.20 ml with a cutoff of 2. The d-methamphetamine was 99% with a cutoff of 20%. NOW, in the remarks, it states that the pos. for both could be an illicit, OR, an OTC such as a Vicks inhaler. As I stated in my original post that started this thread, I have been using an OTC nasal spray for years! I am not someone on this site trying to beat a drug test, I am a retired cop with severe diabetic neuropathy. This Dr gave me a morphine pump implant that gave me relief like I haven't had in 20 yrs!!! Then 2 weeks after the surgery I test pos. for methamphetamine! It has been at least 20 years since I have even SEEN methamphetamine!! Now I am black balled in north Texas cause no other Dr. will take me with a pos. test. WHAT THE F*** DO I DO WHEN IT RUNS DRY IN 4 MONTHS??

the ranitidine will definitely cause a false positive for meth I'm living proof of that, unlike you I never went to a pain clinic I was 100% clean when I had a urine test to come back positive for meth I was at a loss for words because I had no idea why the test was saying that and besides all I ever did was take pain meds an xanax in the past and I quit those 5yrs ago meth was never my deal so I wanted to prove I was clean by offering a blood test and they agreed an sent me to a hospital after about 5hrs waiting they drew my blood only to find out the test couldn't be sent off because my probation officer never sent a chain of custody or something like that and the probation office was closed so all I could do was go back to the officer the next morning an explain to him they told me he should have sent me to a clinic so I did an he admitted it was his error not mine an sent me to the clinic my blood came up clean but the other officer said it had time to leave my blood overnight so they were still saying I was guilty an offering me drug classes on how to get off a drug I've never done in my life I couldn't believe it so what I did was got a hair test done that goes back 90 days and it tested for meth and several other drugs and the entire test came back clean as a whistle and they didn't know what to say to me and I just said I told ya I was clean lol and not long after that I gets a call that I haven't got to report to probation anymore so if you only take meds that's prescribed to you then I recommend you have a hair test done explain what you take because those prescribed drugs will show up on the hair test for what they are but no meth will show up because its simply not in your system and the hair test will end all discussion and put this matter behind you, good luck.

I also take ranitidine and also came up positive for methamphetamine on my drug screen test..I have never done drugs in all my life. My doctor says it's cocaine or speed and then asks me if I take marijuana. I told him no sir then proceeded to worry because I do not take anything that isn't prescribed to me. I don't know what to do but I am gonna share this bit of info with my doctor so thank u. One thing I don't understand is that I have been taking the same meds for a long time and I have never since I have been going to the pain clinic have ever tested positive for methamphetamine. I don't get it I have always taken the same stuff but am just now coming up positive for this stuff... I personally don't get it but I wish u the best of luck. I hope I have a blood test done to prove that I'm not a druggy! I will not and have never taken methamphetamine!

I go to a pain clinic and now twice I have come up positive for methamphetamine. I don't even know what that is ? I have never done drugs in all my life except the ones that are prescribed to me...I take equatro, ziprasidone,lexapro,clonazapam,ranitidine,metoclopromide and oxycodone and morphine...What on earth would cause a positive for this?

Brenda there is a way to tell a difference go to the lab and tell them you want a hair follicle test done and make sure the test is confirmed GM/MC or something like that and if you truly are clean the test will come back fine but if you aren't clean or had any illegal drugs in the last 90 days it will show up on the test and there's no sense in fooling yourself thinking it will come back clean because it won't and all you would have accomplished is to waste your time an money but if you are clean the and that's the only thing standing between you and your son then you should be cleared immediately good luck hope things turn out well for you.

Just recently I was in the hospital and was told I had Methamphetamine, Heroin, and cocaine in my system. I had not taken any of these drugs. I lost my son and and this has caused so much heartache and depression. There has to be a way to tell the difference.

I just took a Urine 4 panel Drug Test, it came up Positive for Methamphetamine s. I do NOT use Crytsal Meth. The Prescription s I take are Clonazepam, Oxycodont-Acetaminophen, Trazodone, Omeprazole, & Dicyclomine

Yes, it has been known to. It can cause a false positive for amphetamines and methamphetamine.

There is no drug other than methamphetamines that will show up on a hair follicle positive for methamphetamines. This is a common excuse for those who want to fool themselves that they have serious drug issues.

Stacey, Saliva is a poor test. It shows only recent use, and it just isn't a good one. Urine or blood would have been better. Hair can also be done, but that goes back for 90 days use.

GC/MS is Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrophotometry. LC/MS/MS is Liquid Chromatography Dual Mass Spectrophotometry. Both are conclusive and the GOLD STANDARD for Courts and pure analysis of any and all compounds/ drugs, metabolites, etc.
My lab takes walk ins but you would have to be in Nevada. What State are you in?
You should ask your pain doctor for a copy of the analysis of your test and how the testing was done. You could then contact that lab and ask them to confirm it (but I doubt they have the specimen). Now, if that doctor was doing point of care testing, doing it in the office, with a "strip" type or card test, he was only doing a screen which CANNOT be considered a positive test. They give many false negative and false positive results. That is why confirmation by GC or LC/MS is a MUST. Good luck.
