I,m a campus police officer, and a student found a small bottle in a bathroom. He turned it over to me, and I don't know if I should destroy it, or throw it in the garbage.

The FDA guidelines for pill disposal is to always destroy them, regardless of what they are, before throwing them away. They recommend mixing them in with something that will degrade the pills, such as used, wet coffee grounds or kitty litter and then disposing of them in the trash.
