Weird Side Effects, Feels Like I Am Going Through The Motions

This may sound REALLY weird. I have been on Lexapro for about 1.5 years. I have been on almost EVERY anxiety medication since the age of 11 (I'm now 26). My anxiety has never been more manageable than it is on Lexapro, although environmental and other factors could play a role. However, I would like some advice on a certain side effect that I have been noticing lately. I'm not sure how to explain it... But it has become almost nearly IMPOSSIBLE for me to soak in my surroundings, a situation, my life. This may sound confusing but my brain won't allow me to really process my life. I almost feel like I'm going through the motions. For instance, I was on vacation and surrounded by beautiful scenery so I tried to look around and really take it all in so I could remember it and just be in the moment... But I couldn't. Does anyone else feel this? what can I do? I don't want my life to pass me by.

It doesn't sound weird at all, if you search this site, there are several other posts very similar in nature and all by people taking Lexapro, or similar medications.

I experienced it myself when they thought I needed something for depression and OCD and put me on Zoloft for awhile. Things were great at first, then after about 18months on it, everything just seemed almost deadened and I hated it.

It's really due to the way it works on brain chemicals, your body kind of gets used to it and it adds a kind of dulling effect.

What dosage are you taking?

Some changes there for awhile might shake things up a bit.

Can I borrow some.... I've had the same probs w/ my meds. It's difficult to correct dose. To add insult to injury - I find out my own sister has been stealing them. Shaping up to be a wonderful holiday~!!

Hi, please go to an experienced counsellor or psychotherapist. You may need to give closures to past issues. Sometimes it helps to counsel self by imagining if you were the adult and you, the little boy was standing in front of you...what could you say to him so that he felt like breathing in the beauty around him. Tell him it takes an effort but it is worth it. Just go into an open field, sing, shout out to someone you love the most... The experience will leave you elated. Spiritual experiences may help - look for a quiet, comfortable place, breathe in and feel the breath travel upwards using the bridge of your nose. So so as many times as you need to do so and for as long as you can. Concentrate on one challenge you face. Just be aware that it is there. Don't try to get rid of it. Then go back and feel your breath travel up the bridge of your nose. You will feel totally calm and over time, you either will find a solution to your challenge or it will not matter to you anymore.
