I have been using B&L Advanced Eye Relief for several months now and it is working better than Visine LR. Don't get any burning sensation and my eyes are not nearly as red when I wake up in the morning and are even whiter than LR when I use the drops. I think prolonged use of LR aggravated the problem. Must get the Advanced Relief Redness Maximum Relief with .03% naphazoline hydrochloride. Other brands have a lesser content of this ingredient and they don't work. I used LR for many years and Occuclear before that and was very upset when J & J discontinued LR, but, for me at least, I have found a better alternative.

First time poster, but have been following along this thread for quite awhile now. I have been a LR user for years (too many!). I would ask my Eye Dr about using Visine and he always encouraged me to quit. I would try to but you cant be a professional with bloodshot eyes. Bad for business. I do think the blood vessel constrictor drug in LR is addictive and turns into a "rinse and repeat" never ending cycle. I remember all to well the last scare we had back in 2010 when Visine Long Lasting went off the shelf and finally came back as Visine LR. Feels like deja vu. Hoping this comes back rebranded yet again.

Since that first scare I always tried to keep a couple extra bottles on hand. Then it happened, went to buy deodorant and other cosmetics and was going to get some LR too. Not at Walgreens. Weird. Went to CVS. Gone. Went everywhere I could think of and all gone. I thought here we go....AGAIN!!! I still had a couple bottles still so I started to wean myself down to one drop of LR in the morning. I used to always use 2 drops and some late afternoon if needed. Still have half a bottle left with 12/14 expiration. It works fine as I think lots of expiration dates are overly aggressive to get consumers to buy new products sooner than actually needed. Bought the Afrin and Visine Tears but haven't pulled that trigger yet. Playing a laboratory tech with own eyes still scares me. Found a 9/15 expiration bottle of LR on eBay for $75 and bought it for a safety net. I do have to say having an extra bottle on reserve feels better than having $75 in the bank! Our eyes, and the well being that goes with it, are unfortunately addicted to LR.

So trying to break the addiction to LR I tried B&L Maximum Relief this morning. Felt much smoother on the eye (assuming this is the lubricant) and eyes reacted surprisingly better than i expected. Took a little longer to whiten, and i would say they whitened to 90% compared to LR and its now mid afternoon and still looking good. In the past i tried other brands with no luck. One hypothesis is the fact i have weaned myself to one drop of LR a day for the last year. I think for those using multiple drops a day the redness actaully worsens over time and rebound redness happens a lot easier.

Hoping I can beat the LR addiction (at least with something different). Visine is covering their a$$ because the ingedient we all desperately need is readily available in Afrin and even Walmart's generic Equate brand. There is a much bigger letigious issue in play or they are going "quiet" again (for whatever reason) and will come back under a new name. These guys aren't stupid and LR did sell very well. It was always in short supply while other Visine brands had plenty in stock at every store i bought from.

Keep the faith and thanks for the thread to keep us all informed and tell our story.

Thanks
Mark

Just want to let people know that Oxylin works as well, dare I say even better than LR. Tried it last week for the first time, very relieved.

Visine LR seems to have mysteriously disappeared from store shelves nationwide. The same active ingredient (oxymetazoline) can be found in Claritin Allergy eyedrops as well as Ocu-clear, if you can find them.

After trying many different drops, I asked my brother (med student, going to become a doctor) about a good replacement that actually works. He suggested Clear Eyes Redness Relief or Opcon-A. He said the chemical that does the trick is is Naphazoline Hydrochloride (HCl). I bought the Clear Eyes (0.3% Naph. HCl) and it worked great, if not better than the Visine LR. Hope this helps anyone still looking for a replacement.

I would be weary of putting a nasal spary in my eyes as well.. sad that this is what we are resorting to b/c of the nonsense related to the discontinuation of our beloved L.R. here is a Post on this thread from when this happened back in 2010 and these 2 products seem to have all the ingredients of L.R Albeit it also includes a nasal spray .. Please also protest this on FB and other forms of Social Media .. Companies hate bad press on Social Media and we must be heard ..

here goes on prior post:

I noticed that there are other allergy products on the market which contain the same key ingredient as Visine LR called Oxymetazoline. The only thing is that they come as a nasal spray and the proportion of Oxymetazoline is a higher dose.

Here is an example:

Visine LR contained Oxymetazoline HCl 0.025% as the active ingredient along with Benzalkonium Chloride, Boric Acid, Edetate Disodium, Purified Water, Sodium Borate, and Sodium Chloride as the inactive ingredients.

A nasal spray such as Afrin contains Oxymetazoline HCI 0.05% as the active ingredient along with Benzalkonium Chloride Solution, Benzyl Alcohol, Edetate Disodium, Polyethylene Glycol, Povidone, Propylene Glycol, Purified Water, Sodium Phosphate Dibasic, Sodium Phosphate Monobasic as the inactive ingredients.

A saline solution called Advanced Eye Relief Eye Wash made by Bausch & Lomb contains Purified Water as the main ingredient along with Boric Acid, Sodium Borate, Sodium Chloride, Hydrochloric Acid, Sodium Hydroxide, Edetate Disodium 0.025%, and Sorbic Acid 0.1% as the inactive ingredients.

If you were to mix 2 parts Afrin with 1 part Eye Wash you would essentially dilute it from being 0.05% Oxymetazoline HCl to 0.025%, the same proportion as in the original Visine LR! Just be sure to mix it as accurately as possible (you can use the sterile cup included with the eye wash) and then place the mixture back into a sterile eye drop container which is empty.

Hopefully this will help some of you. Please exercise caution and proceed at your own risk. This is not intended to be medical advice. The above products are available over the counter and aren't expensive at all.

Best of luck!

I for one am more than willing to join the boycott of Johnson and Johnson's products. Thanks for posting the link.

Another angle I am pursing (and hoping you may join me in) is contacting the makers of Nostrilla (a nose spray with oxymetazoline) that is currently on the market. You can email them at: [email protected]

I have told them to please consider making an eyedrop with oxymetazoline since they are already using the ingredient. I informed them that Johnson and Johnson stopped producing Visine LR and that there isn't ANY EYEDROPS ON THE MARKET WITH OXYMETAZOLINE. I added that they would be the only US Company to do so and would manufacture a much needed product. Prestige Brands actually sent me a letter saying they are passing my request to Marketing and Quality Assurance personnel!

I remember when this happened a couple years ago. It was terrible! I had to go months with irritated red eyes for months. I ended up getting visine workplace from a Canadian pharmacy and it was pretty much the same thing as visine lr, but now visine workplace is discontinued too=( I don't know what to do now. Im all out of eye drops. If someone finds eye drops that have oxymetazoline in it, PLEASE HELP!

I think it is crucial that J&J really be made to understand that people are selling this product all over ebay, Amazon, etc. with insanely high price markups. This shows that there is a known demand. In addition, if J&J needs to put it back on the market with a price hike in order to justify producing/selling it, I say go for it! It still won't be as high many are willing to pay it online. Maybe there is a happy medium here.

Can you please list the exact name on box of the B&L Maximum Relief? I went to B&L site and didn't see an exact name match. I'm having the same issue and feeling stranded without the Visine LR. Thanks for helping me and others with your postings.

Hi everyone... whoever has tried the B&L drops; do they sting your eyes when you first put them in? The Visine LR was good for the long-lasting whitening effect, but what I love, first thing in the morning is that cool, refreshing feeling it leaves your eyes in. That's what I'm going to miss most about Visine LR. So does the B&L drops do the same thing? I'm just curious. Because someone else recommended the Rite Aid allergy drops and although they keep my eyes white OK... not fabulous... the sting and do not "refresh" my eyes in the morning. Just curious.

I can't believe this is happening. It was my go to eye drop for yrs. It is that one specific ingredient at .025%.There's others that put other ingredients in them and actually make my eyes redder I have two bottles that expired 12/14 and one almost empty bottle . It hasn't expired. I signed the petition. The company hasn't said anything?

Have you tried afrin like some on here are suggesting mixed with half saline? I might give it a try, because yeah you're right, sooner or later all the available bottles will expired and/or get used. I contacted Visine, by email and phone, and they just keep wanting me to take surveys about why I use it. So I took them but never heard any thing, but more "tell us more" emails. So maybe they're listening. Good for signing the petition, it's all we can do.

Christina,

Unbelievable!!! This is no lie. I must have ESP or something. Last night, I just got a feeling to check in here, and I commented that I did not hear back from Walmart yet.

Well...

I just picked up yesterday's mail this morning, and what a difference a day makes!

:-)

I wrote a letter to Walmart's CEO and my letter was referred to the Senior Purchaser of Eye Care and Contact Lenses. He responded with a "detailed" letter confirming Johnson & Johnson discontinuing Visine LR in July of 2014. Walmart also shared my letter with the J&J team and asked that they consider adding Visine LR back to the assortment. (That's good because now J&J knows Walmart is aware that consumers want Visine LR back on the shelves. I had also referred Walmart to this blog to read our comments.)

The letter also explained how oxymetazoline works and said no other eye care items appear to contain the oxymetazoline ingredient--that it's more common in nasal items.

The letter also suggested trying the following products: Systane brands, Refresh brands, Opcon-A, and Equate (Walmart's brand) Eye Allergy. It also suggested contacting your optometrist or health care provider for further treatment options.

Needless to say, I was VERY pleased to receive such a detailed, professional letter from Walmart. And although Walmart did not state they will make oxymetazoline eye drops for us, you just never know. If any company can do it, Walmart can.

A lot of people get angry when Walmart takes over things, but that is the American way--to create business and serve the people. If Walmart ends up creating oxymetazoline eye drops, Johnson & Johnson should have nothing to say about it. They had their chance. We've been begging and pleading with them.

I would tell everybody I know that when they want redness relief for their eyes, the oxymetazoline eye drops are the way to go. The others might be somewhat good, but all those other eye drops on the shelves are not necessary. Most of them don't work at all.

Hi fellow sufferers. The correspondence with Walgreens is encouraging. In October last year Fred mentioned Allergex in South Africa has the Visine LR 'magic ingredient' and Meenal found Zoamet also but only available in India. Also I recall someone finding on Alibaba a manufacturer in China. Rhonda-as you have the contact with Walgreen's perhaps you could ask them to try and stock from any of these 3 suppliers as its easier than them having to manufacture it? I live in London and have tried every option in europe to find a supplier. Thanks, Patrick.

Rhonda,

Wow! That is great that Johnson and Johnson actually wrote to you and acknowledged your letter to Walmart. I think they will no longer respond to me
because of the petition I started.
Either way, now Johnson and Johnson has been notified by Walmart (a huge business) and hundreds of people about the need to bring Visine LR back or make another eyedrop with oxymetazoline.
I am cautious to get my hopes up, but it seems that Johnson and Johnson may be thinking about something in the future? I wonder if the "manufacturing complexities" involved oxymetazoline or another ingredient in Visine LR?

I have also tried both of the Visine products they recommended. They did not help me at all. In fact, I think they are many of us that have actually tried ALL remaining Visine products on the market with no success.

Thank you for your letters and for posting the results!

Christina,

Same here... I don't have allergies either. I also don't have a dry eye problem, so I don't really need a lubricant in my eye drops.

I'm off to the store to purchase another brand of eye drops, since I have only one more bottle of Visine LR. After reading the comments you and Rick posted, I'm going to try the recommended Bausch + Lomb eye drops and skip the Opcon-A altogether. I don't have money to waste.

It's amazing what a difference Visine LR has made in my life. I never go a day without using eye drops--and I don't want to. Without them, I could probably pass for an extra on "The Walking Dead." Lol! They really make me look and feel more alive.
