I dont believe Visine LR damages your eyes. Ive used it for over 20 years and my vision and eye structure are fine.

I agree that VIsine LR is harmless for long-term use. I think that Visine has a lot of offerings in its product line, and LR just wasn't profitable enough anymore. That's why overseas companies have filled the niche, but at a much higher price. Visine could have started selling LR at a higher price, but with so many similarly priced options for their customers, one high-priced product (LR) would never make it.

Back in 1985 my doctor helped me find something that would work for me. We tried endless eyedrops and salves, nothing worked. Just by luck I tried OxyClear that worked great, usually just a morning dose lasted all day. When OxyClear went out of business, Visine started the LR version with Oxymetazaline, which also worked great.

So put me down for 31 years of daily use of this product.

I'm now using Afrin Nasal Spray with no problems, thanks to the recommendations I found on this site.

I received the package yesterday so it took about 9 days. It was well package in both bubble wrap and Styrofoam. It was in a small cardboard box with lots of South African stamps. The Allergex had an expiration date of Nov 2017 and was sealed. This was a test run so now that it was successful, I'll purchase a half dozen more. Much cheaper than purchasing on other sites. Christina, google the name. You will find it. Good luck and report on your progress.

FULL ANSWER AS TO WHY VISINE L.R. IS GONE - stupid kids...
Visine L.R. was an eye drop product that reduced redness in the eyes and had a long-lasting effect. Visine no longer has the product or product information listed on its website. On October 25, 2012, the FDA announced severe adverse events associated with children accidentally ingesting certain eye drops, including Visine L.R. Children under the age of 5 with accidental ingestion of oxymetazoline experienced serious and life-threatening reactions such as coma, decreased heart rate and sedation that required hospitalization. However, no deaths were a result of Visine L..R. ingestion. The product disappeared from store shelves shortly after the announcement. Oxymetazoline continues to be an ingredient in nasal spray.

Hi folks. I'm also still using my Bausch + Lomb Advanced Care Eye Relief eye drops. They feel good in my eyes and make me look "halfway" decent, but gosh, what a change from Visine LR which made my eyes stand-out bright.

I keep hoping that with the tax codes changing under the new administration, a business will go out on a limb and bring our beloved oxymetazoline eye drops back. If the economy gets any better, maybe I will start writing letters again to some of the companies.

Oh my goodness. I just bought a bottle of B+L Advanced Eye Relief. I had looked for the 1 and 2-pack cartons at Walmart for a few weeks and found none on the shelves. All gone from all three Walmarts in my area. So, right away I go, "Hmm..." A family member said, "Oh they just sell out so fast and they have to receive a new shipment."

I'm like, "Yea, right!"

Anyway, I got a $1 off coupon in the paper this past week for the eye drops and was happy about it. This morning, I went to Walmart again and looked and looked for my familiar packaging of this eye drops. I then looked closer and saw that it is in a new package--light blue and white. It's now called, "Advanced Eye Relief." You see no more "Maximum Redness Relief" on the carton. It's just says "Redness."

So, you know how suspicious I am. I don't trust the manufacturers at all anymore. They change every product now, slowly cutting and cutting ingredients. Anyway, on the outside at the top of the package it says, "NEW LOOK! same formula."

Right away I looked at the ingredients.

Well, now the amount of Naphazoline hydrochloride (the redness reliever) in the eye drops is at 0.012%. The last formula had it at 0.03%. The lubricant in the product is now Polyethylene and it's at 0.2%, whereas before it was Hypromellose and it was at 0.5%. The preservative in the eye drops (benzalkonium chloride) remains the same at 0.01%.

Are these companies going broke or what? Greed? Why do SO MANY products have to be changed from what they were originally. I don't get it.

This thread is timeless! Several years back as Visine L.R. was disappearing from the shelves, I came to read everyone's suggestions. Today, I find it's still here and thriving.

My contribution: I have found that absolutely no eye drops on store shelves work for me. My eye doctor continues to suggest Blink lubricating drops. I am a contact lense wearer, and I experience dryness. Blink helps my eyes feel better when they are irritated, but nothing can remove my daily red like oxymetazoline. It's very costly at around $35 per bottle, but a two-bottle supply will last me between 4-6 months. Since I don't pay expenses for other pharmaceuticals and have low healthcare costs, I can justify the expense of these drops, more or less. I have not tried the other products offered, but I'll stick with Allergex since it's effective and available.

Meenal,

I found Oxylin to be a bit harsh on my eyes. Cendo and Zoamet came in 5ml bottles. Less practical in price, but easy to carry and worked okay for me. Allergex (15ml) is the only one I have re-ordered. But different strokes for different folks. Others have their favorites.

I've been using Oxylin for 8 months. I use 2 drops per day. No problems at all. Avoid bottle tip contact to the eyes or lids and you should not have a problem. They cut down preservatives so that's why they recommend do not use after 30 days of opening.

There are a number of replacement products from outside the U.S. for VISINE LR. Just read some earlier posts for more detailed info.

Re: Jeff (# 998) Expand Referenced Message

I'm down to my last few drops of Visine LR. Although it isn't as effective as it once was, it is the only thing that still gets most of the red out for a good chunk of the day. Thanks for the tip on Lumify. There are rave reviews about it on Amazon from people that are long term red eye drop users so I am cautiously optimistic. I plan to purchase some in next few days and will report my results here. Background: I've been using Oxymetazoline drops since the mid 90s when first introduced by Occuclear. When Visine LR was discontinued, I started to panic. I loaded up on about 12 bottles.

Re: Meenal (# 986) Expand Referenced Message

My problem is also a droopy eyelid. Oxymetazoline is the only ingredient in eye drops I’ve found that opens my eye. If anyone finds something else please let me know.

So I did try out the Lumify. I thought it worked great. My eyes were definitely white! I had gone to a function outdoors and it was super hot out, so due to the heat, I was uncomfortable, but my eyes were clear for the majority of the time. Sometimes when I’m not 100% (like this day due to heat) my eyes get redder than normal. I’m happy to find Lumify —I’ll use it sparingly tho.

I also noticed Oxymetazoline appears to be discontinued in nasal sprays. I was in the grocery store and realized the brand names listed a different ingredient (can't remember what) and the store generic brand containing Oxymetazoline was at a "close-out" price. I wonder if this whole thing is part of an FDA recommendation/demand. Anyhoo...

Good luck to you, Meenal.

I hate the way things are nowadays. Not much remains the same. The goods and products we know and love are constantly being changed.

Re: Meenal (# 1023) Expand Referenced Message

For my eye problem - PTÔSIS (droopy eyelids) Visine LR was brilliant .
Lumify doesn’t work at all for me. So I have to keep procuring Oxymetazoline based eydrops
CENDO ASTHENOF (Indonesian) or AlLLERGEX (South African)
or at least B& L Redness reliever ( without Oxymetazoline hence not so effective )

Please do let me know if anyone finds any other good Oxymetazoline based eye drops anywhere else as the above 2 are quite complicated to procure !

Re: Rhonda (# 1032) Expand Referenced Message

This may sound crazy, but growing up my sister had severe red eyes due to allergies and the Dr. prescribed drops with cocaine (HCL or CL possibly) and rose hips or rose water. They got rid of redness and itching very effectively. Something you might want to ask the Dr. about.

It absolutely did! The company making Upneeq wants to have a monopoly on the ingredient in eye drops so they can drive prices up.
