Visine Lr Discontinued? (Page 52) (Top voted first)
UpdatedHaving problems finding this product. Has it been discontinued and if so, do you know why?
I noticed that there are other allergy products on the market which contain the same key ingredient as Visine LR called Oxymetazoline. The only thing is that they come as a nasal spray and the proportion of Oxymetazoline is a higher dose.
Here is an example:
Visine LR contained Oxymetazoline HCl 0.025% as the active ingredient along with Benzalkonium Chloride, Boric Acid, Edetate Disodium, Purified Water, Sodium Borate, and Sodium Chloride as the inactive ingredients.
A nasal spray such as Afrin contains Oxymetazoline HCI 0.05% as the active ingredient along with Benzalkonium Chloride Solution, Benzyl Alcohol, Edetate Disodium, Polyethylene Glycol, Povidone, Propylene Glycol, Purified Water, Sodium Phosphate Dibasic, Sodium Phosphate Monobasic as the inactive ingredients.
A saline solution called Advanced Eye Relief Eye Wash made by Bausch & Lomb contains Purified Water as the main ingredient along with Boric Acid, Sodium Borate, Sodium Chloride, Hydrochloric Acid, Sodium Hydroxide, Edetate Disodium 0.025%, and Sorbic Acid 0.1% as the inactive ingredients.
If you were to mix 2 parts Afrin with 1 part Eye Wash you would essentially dilute it from being 0.05% Oxymetazoline HCl to 0.025%, the same proportion as in the original Visine LR! Just be sure to mix it as accurately as possible (you can use the sterile cup included with the eye wash) and then place the mixture back into a sterile eye drop container which is empty.
Hopefully this will help some of you. Please exercise caution and proceed at your own risk. This is not intended to be medical advice. The above products are available over the counter and aren't expensive at all.

Best of luck!
I do know it's the one ingredient - Oxymetazoline HCI 0.025% that iwhat makes it awesome. It really doesn't have to be VISINE. As long as I can find a replacement that has it, I'll be ok. No can understand how much of a life crisis this is!!! I did order some off Amazon - but they sent the original. I was beyond pissed. (and they still haven't refunded me, but that's another story!) If I do find something -- I will let you know. Please do the same for me! I'm actually going to Canada tomorrow for work, I wonder if they still have it. I will check! :)
Hi- NO LUCK while in Canada. :( Hopefully something comes along soon.
Hank,
I do not know. I have already sent an email to Johnson and Johnson asking
them to bring the product back. Maybe we can all send emails to the company or start some kind of petition? What do you guys think? I know we cannot be the only ones that specifically need Visine LR.
Can't believe how many people are in the same situation I now find myself in. I ordered the rite aid and Alcon and am waiting my arrival. Praying it works for me. Meanwhile, I am rationing my last bottle of LR. One drop per day.
I ordered the Generic version from India (Zoamet). I expect to receive them in two weeks. Hopefully they work the same as Visine L.R.
Thanks Tony. I just sent an email to Nanjing Tianlang Pharmaceuticals Co., Ltd. inquiring about availability, shipping and costs. I will report what I find out.
Pretty much the same ingredients of Clear Eyes Maximum. I find this works fairly well but poops out much quicker than LR.
The prescription eye drops are called: PREDNISOLONE 1%
The full name is : Prednisole Acetate Ophthalmic Suspension USP manufactured by Alcon Laboratories for Sandoz.
They cost $80 cash (out-of-pocket) for the 10 ml bottle at the COSTCO pharmacy in the USA, and $40 for the half size (5 ml bottle).
If you have prescription insurance it would help out with the cost. I've been using those drops on as "as-needed" basis for several years.
I am a long time Visine LR user. I called the 1 800 number from the Visine website, and they confirmed it had been discontinued (due to "difficulties in production"). I tried the Afrin nasal spray (one drop in each eye), it stung a little bit, but after a few minutes it was fine. Within 15 minutes my eyes were nice and white. Now I am going to try and mix it 50/50 with an eye lubricant and test it again. I will let you know the results.
Christina,
I wrote Walmart, but have not heard anything from them yet. I also directed them to this website. I just hope the email makes it to the right people. Either way, I saved my letter. If I don't get a response soon, I might re-send the letter via U.S. mail.
I also don't want a "lubricant" in my eye drops. That's what I loved about Visine LR. It just made my eyes feel really good.
Awesome, I have the recipe but have been afraid to try. Please let us know how it works out for you.
Hey, did you try a mixed solution, and if so what was it and does it work? I was thinking maybe just mixing with regular Visine, have you tried?
Correction - That's 0.025 and 0.013 Oxymetalazone.
I have used afrin and saline the last time we had this issue and it does work.
HI, do they ship the prescrips to you?
Disappointed about Visine LR being discontinued but tried OPCON-A (Bauch and Lomb) had no redness and my eyes feel great…Noticed others have tried this too which also worked for them. Hope this helps others too.
#651 - Christina,
The letter I recently received from Johnson & Johnson basically "put the nail in the coffin" for me. They restated that Visine LR is discontinued. They said they are encouraged to see consumers so passionate about their products and that they appreciate our feedback.
The reason Visine LR was discontinued is that it worked by constricting blood flow, hence the reduced redness. This really got the red out, but it put the eyes at very high risk for damage due to reduced blood flow. Nutrients cannot get to the eyes' vital structures without blood flow. And toxins don't get removed, without the blood flow, either. So eye health trumps getting the redness out, every time!
It's probably been discontinued because it can damage your eyes! The product gets the red out by reducing blood flow to and from your vital eye structures. This can lead to permanent damage to your eyes and your vision.
Sorry, I liked it too, but once I understood how the product works and the damage it can cause, I am glad I'm no longer using it...my eyes aren't as white, but I'm no longer instilling a potentially-damaging product into my eyes!
