Visine Lr Discontinued? (Page 34)
UpdatedHaving problems finding this product. Has it been discontinued and if so, do you know why?
Hi Rhonda,
I would have to agree. Back ~ 2010 when they pulled it off the market you couldn't get a straight answer from consumer care about what happened. Then voila, it shows up with new packaging. When I spoke with what seemed to be a knowledgeable individual, it was mentioned that the problem revolves around the pharmaceutical company that produces the oxymetazoline. That's about as far as I can take it. People just need to keep calling Visine consumer care and keep bugging them about the issue.
Hello everyone,
I received a reply from CVS/pharmacy. In part, it reads:
"... I want to assure you that I have forwarded your suggestion to the appropriate department for further review. We appreciate you taking the time to suggest that we create a safe, inexpensive oxymetazoline eye drop. The items that we sell in our stores are often based on customer feedback.
Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts and for being a loyal CVS/pharmacy customer.
Sincerely,
Kristen

So very pleased to receive another letter. At least, I know "someone" read my letter to them.
I sure wish the eye drops were available at CVS. We have them all over our area and it would be so convenient.
for those of you mixing Afrin in either distilled water or moisture drops, what are you mixing it in? where does one get an empty eye dropper?
Just returned from Rite Aide, the only store that seemed to carry Visine LR. My .5 oz. bottle is low and I bought it maybe a year ago (Exp: 5/15) so I went to get another. None on the shelves ! Why I wondered? I called home and my son read the active ingredient to me and NONE of the redness relievers had oxymetazoline. So I Googled it and found this blog. I checked eBay and the prices were nuts! After reading everyone's posts I now know it's unavailable and I'm bummed! It works so well. What to do?
I'm wondering if anyone has tried the Zoamet drops from India? I've been trying to find an alternative and cannot ! I may pursue this and try to get some custom drops manufactured if possible! Would anyone be interested in this?
I emptied the afrin bottle in a cup took a syringe and sucked up all the afrin back up to measure how much water to put back to make it 50-50. Then put all of it back in the nose spray bottle, works great also it makes a lot. Also alittle story got into my beautiful wifes car the other day, looking for something in her car come across one beautiful bottle of Visine LR. What a pleasure it was to get that blessing of my only eye drops that did work for me.
Eg. Use a clear bottle of Visine tears. Place a mark on the outside where the bottle is full. Remove the top and pour out < half the bottle. Pour the Afrin into the Visine bottle up to the mark. Done.
I used Visine LR for years and Occuclear before that both containing oxymetazoline. I was very upset when Visine LR was discontinued and have been trying to get someone like CVS or Amazon to bring in an equivalent from South Africa known as Allergex. So far, no luck. After much searching, I found a product that is working! Bausch & Lomb Advanced Eye Relief, Redness Maximum Relief. Make sure you get the right one, it's the maximum with 0.03% Naphazoline Hydrocloride. Other products contain less than 0.03% and they are not as effective.
Don't have a bottle here, now, to check ingredients, but have found various types of Visine in the Dollar Tree stores.
I'm currently using the B+L maximum redness relief eye drops. For me, they are certainly better than nothing, but one day, when I had very little sleep and my eyes were irritated, the drops were not nearly as effective. I have to be very careful to get enough sleep if I want to look halfway decent.
Visine LR works quickly. I can almost feel it working in my eyes. The oxymetazoline narrows the blood vessels. I can apply the Visine LR, rinse my face with water, look into the mirror and see my eyes instantly whiter.
I want to add to my last comment that the redness relief offered in other somewhat effective eye drops does not last. Not one of those other eye drops can make the claim. You must reapply them.
Visine LR kept my eyes generally clear throughout the day. At the end of a particularly stressful day, my eys may not look "super white" like they did when I applied the drops in the morning, but they certainly weren't distracting or bloodshot.
I liked applying Visine LR in the morning and not having to worry how my eyes looked by day's end.
I just wanted to let you guys know that Johnson and Johnson are selling these Visine Long lasting on Amazon for highway robbery. This is a big reason that they aren't motivated to put them back on the shelves I am sure. It seems like this should be illegal. They get all of us needing their product and then stop distributing it to the stores so they can make 1000 times the profit. They should be sued!!
Yesterday, I received a letter from Bayer HealthCare, thanking me for my request that they produce oxymetazoline eye drops. They also included a very nice coupon booklet that I can certainly use.
At least Bayer knows our desires and, hopefully, they will seriously consider them.
I don't think it's J & J selling them its private companies that bought up a bunch to sell it happened a few years ago too
OMG Gene i see what you're talking about, $150 for a box?! Would anyone actually bother getting this at such a price?! Also, like the person just before me said, it's probably wholesalers who have a few left selling them on Amazon - it says "from Johnson and Johnson" on Amazon but if you look it's from different sellers.
I just found 5 bottles of VLR at an older (kinda rundown) Shop 'n Save so I bought em all. I drove around to EVERY KIND OF STORE that sells eye care products until I found them. A local CVS still had the price tag and spot for the product but they still haven't refilled from when I bought them out a couple months ago and the lady never called me back about their availability.
I would recommend that you search EVERY store in your area until you find someone that hasn't run out of stock yet... and then buy them all! Otherwise I would try to buy one off of ebay before the price gougers run out of stock!
I'm hoping my reserve will last until they bring the product back!!!
Just found this stuff called Zoamet Eye Drops (Oxymetazoline). Its manufactured by East India Pharmaceutical Works Ltd.
HI VLR - Yes, someone mentioned those - I wonder how we can get them. Do they allow us to order them from the US?
I have had the same experience with Visine regarding Visine LR. I reached out and did not get good news.
I went to Walgreen's and purchased 7 products and began my testing. The first 6 failed completely, however lucky # 7 did the trick.
Clear eyes Cooling Comfort, Redness Relief Active Ingredients: Glycerin (.5% Lubricant), Naphazoline Hydrochloride (0.012%) (Eye redness reliever)
Don't mistake the "cooling" as a burn when you initially put the first drops in. It only lasts about 10 seconds.
I hope this helps at least one of you.
Hi Irwin,
I looked up the ingredients for Clear Eyes Cooling Comfort, and it says:
Glycerin - 0.5% (Lubricant), Naphazoline hydrochloride - 0.03% (Redness Reliever), and the rest are inactive ingredients.
So, it's basically the same formula as B & L Redness Maximum Relief, but B & L contains Hypromellose 0.5% as the lubricant.
I ended up purchasing Opcon-A anyway, but I haven't tried it yet. I just want to make sure I cover all my bases. However, one major thing I have to do since our beloved Visine LR went away is wear minimal eye makeup and keep other irritants away from my eyes.
