Visine Lr Discontinued? (Page 18)

Having problems finding this product. Has it been discontinued and if so, do you know why?
A user (rtrsr) on another thread referred us to a compounding company willing to make the eye drops if you have a prescription:
"Custom Prescriptions of Lancaster
902 N Duke St
Lancaster, PA 17602
They do have a website
Ask for Andrea"
Other people have posted that they haven't received email responses from the company so I contacted them over the phone. They were very helpful. I can only imagine that there are other compounding pharmacies out there willing to do the same so I'd just start calling around if they won't ship to your area.
Occifer,
You know, I think it comes down to the almighty dollar at the end of the day. It has to do with money.
Visine LR had devoted consumers. It was the only eye drops many of us bought for years and years. So many products come onto the market today, and in no time at all, they are changed by the manufacturers. They immediately begin "snipping" away at the original product, removing ingredients, making them less effective, cheaper quality, cheaper to produce. Years ago, it seemed that products remained the same for generations.
The Visine brand probably takes in plenty of money for all their other ineffective eye drops that are bought by people who don't know better. Perhaps removing the oxymetazoline will "help" some of the other companies who may be lagging in sales. And Johnson & Johnson saves money by omitting the oxymetazoline.
Notice how most supermarkets and department stores carry certain products that others do not. They balance each other out somewhat. Walmart dominates and I'm sure it is not lacking in sales, but even Walmart won't carry everything. Sometimes you are forced to go to another store to get a particular product or food item. Then too, Walmart will carry things like poor quality fruits and vegetables and you have to go to another grocery store to get the higher quality fruits and vegetables.
I believe these companies work together in some ways.
The post ref FDA warnings doesn't address the fact that Tetrahydrzaline and Naphazoline are llisted along with oxymetazoline as a danger to small kids...but just about every redness eyedrop on the shelves now has those other two ingredients. How is that explained if Visine LR was pulled by Visine due to the FDA warning ? That theory doesn't hold water. The reason we can't find LR must have to do with the fact that the "miracle" O drug can't be obtained by the Visine company?
Otrivine antistin eyedrops contains xylometazoline (oxymetazoline developed from xylometazoline)
Hi Rhonda,
I giggled at what you stated. So true! It's just probably not a good idea to start experimenting.
Juank, thank you so much for the info. Perhaps I'll try ordering Zoamet as you and others seem to have pretty good luck.
This is crazy. I was hoping by now we would see a new oxymetazoline product. Just when I started to panic over the discontinuation of Ocuclear many years ago, it seemed like Visine L.R. suddenly appeared on the shelves in it's place.
Zoamet 5ml bottles are selling on ebay for $38.00+. I don't feel comfortable paying over $100.00 for 15ml of overseas eye drops. I'm just going to play it safe and stock up on the legit bottles of VLR while I can.
Has anyone tried mixing VLR with another formula to see if they can stretch a bottle out a little longer. I have managed to cut down to one drop of VLR per each eye and I'm getting the same results that I did when I used 3-4 drops in the past (when the supply was plentiful).
Just wondering if a 50/50 mixture of VLR and say Visine Advanced will have the same effect as using a half-drop of VLR in each eye.
If nobody responds then I will try this and post on the outcome.
yes from india in aldaypills, Cindy, no form, they send as medical sample or something similar, cant remember
Hi Cindy,
Believe me, I have been strongly tempted to make my own eye drops too. My eye drops choice after Visine LR is also B+L Advanced Eye Relief (aka Redness Maximum Relief). I bought one bottle of Opcon-A and it contains even less of the Naphazoline redness reliever than Advanced Eye Relief. And though I don't really need a lubricant, I can actually tell that my eyes feel a bit more comfortable after using Advanced Eye Relief. Opcon-A is sans a lubricant and it sometimes produces a very light stinging or tingling sensation in my eyes.
For some reason, if I follow the crowd and do something risky, whatever can go wrong, WILL go wrong. In other words, I'd probably be the one person here to get an infection and ruin my eyes. Things like that have happened to me all my life, so that's another reason why I am so careful and leery. I've learned that I just can't do what a lot of people do.
The form to fill out is a form DHL is required to use (I spoke to the representative) but yes, I'm starting to feel a little overwhelmed and am thinking it's not worth it.
I re-tried the Afrin (12-hour is all I can find) solution using 1 part Afrin and 3 parts Visine Tears. It's scaring me because it works almost too well. My eyes are super white but they feel a little too constricted...they feel weird. I don't know that I'll try that again. The second best option I have found is B & L Advance Eye Relief but just as others have said, it doesn't work quite as well and doesn't last nearly as long.
I just checked out alldaypill and it does appear you can order a minimum quantity of five bottles of Zoamet but I'm wondering if others have experienced the same regulation requirements/form that is required of me now through DHL.
I'm really, really suspicious of folks nowadays. With the economy so bad, people are scamming left and right.
I wouldn't put my SSN on anything like that.
Hi everyone,
Well, ordering the Oxylin Liquifilm (same exact percentage of oxymetazoline in Visine L.R., is proving to be a little more difficult than I had imagined. They've arrived to the U.S. from South Africa, however, DHL contacted me to say I need to fill out a form required by the FDA with my SS#, prescription number, etc. DHL instructed to state ordering in place of OTC product that was discontinued in the US. My order is currently on hold in Cinn, OH. I'm going to fill out what I can...we'll see. I'm thinking this may not be approved in the end.
Juank, I'm curious, do you order the Zoamet eye drops from India? Did you experience having to fill out the same type of form? Do you order online and will you provide the web address? I had looked into Zoamet but wasn't able to order. Any info would be very helpful and appreciated!

In addition. Fill an eye dropper bottle (15mL) ~ 75% with B&L eye wash. Fill the rest with regular Afrin. Outstanding. The eye wash is pH balanced and the lesser amount of the Oxymetazoline the better. White eyes all day. Single drop/eye. Unbelievable.
This was a personal experiment and only sharing this information.
I think the (other) Christina may have looked into a website called alldaypills to order Zoamet from. Has anyone ordered Zoamet from this website before? Just doesn't look kosher to me and my spidey senses are on high alert. But my eyes are getting desperate as my supply of Visine is dwindling.
joank - where did you get them?? India?
McNeil-PPC response about Visine LR being discontinued. (sic)
Thank you for reaching out to us about VISINE® LR.
As a healthcare company dedicated to bringing you the products that best fit consumer needs, we regularly evaluate our product portfolio to find inefficiencies. Unfortunately, we have made the difficult decision to discontinue VISINE® LR.
Products are discontinued for a variety of business reasons. We apologize for this inconvenience and are very sorry for the disappointment this may have caused you. Please know that we value you as a consumer and your feedback.
So It's all about sales. I just wanted a straight answer. I'll never use Visine products again. Hope you all feel the same.
Given the following FDA warning that came out in 2012 (around the first time VLR seemed to vanish) I can only imagine that the Oxymetazoline was having the most adverse effects when accidentally ingested. It's a shame that J & J dropped the product rather than create a child proof cap!!! #boycott Johnson & Johnson
"FDA Drug Safety Communication: Serious adverse events from accidental ingestion by children of over-the-counter eye drops and nasal sprays
Safety Announcement
[10-25-2012] The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is warning the public that accidental ingestion (swallowing) by children of over-the-counter (OTC) eye drops used to relieve redness and nasal decongestant sprays can result in serious harm. The eye drops and nasal sprays that have been involved in the cases of accidental ingestion contain the active ingredients tetrahydrozoline, oxymetazoline, or naphazoline.
The cases of accidental ingestion reviewed by FDA occurred in children 5 years of age and younger (see Data Summary below). No deaths were reported; however, serious events requiring hospitalization such as coma, decreased heart rate, decreased breathing, and sedation (sleepiness) have occurred. Ingestion of only a small amount (1-2 mL; for reference, there are 5 mL in a teaspoon) of the eye drops or nasal spray can lead to serious adverse events in young children. Most of these redness-relief eye drops and nasal decongestant sprays currently do not come packaged with child-resistant closures, so children can accidentally ingest the drug if the bottles are within easy reach.
To protect young children from ingesting these products, earlier this year the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) published a proposed rule* requiring child-resistant packaging for redness-relief eye drops and nasal decongestant sprays.
Data Summary
FDA identified 96 cases of accidental ingestion of products containing tetrahydrozoline, oxymetazoline, or naphazoline by young children, reported between 1985 and October 2012 to the Agency’s Adverse Event Reporting System (AERS and FAERS) databases and to the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System – Cooperative Adverse Drug Event Surveillance (NEISS-CADES) database. The children ranged in age from 1 month to 5 years. Fifty-three cases reported hospitalization due to symptoms including nausea, vomiting, lethargy, tachycardia, decreased respiration, bradycardia, hypotension, hypertension, sedation, somnolence, mydriasis, stupor, hypothermia, drooling, and coma."

Not that I have personally tried to create the mixture (although I'm thinking of it)... I have popped the top off of the Visine LR bottle quite easily and was able to put it back, just as easily. Now, is this going to be a sterile bottle? probably not. Just letting you know, you can pop the top off and replace it.
In regards to creating the mixture of 50% Afrin and 50% Artificial tears, can anyone confirm how they were able to put the Afrin nasal spray into an eye drop bottle? The eye drop bottles do not simply open and allow you to pour liquid into them, they have a very small opening (like a needle). Did you find an eye drop bottle that allows you to unscrew the top off or did you perhaps use a syringe to inj. the Afrin into the small opening of another eye drop bottle?
Please let me know as I would like to follow very safe procedures when creating this diluted mixture and avoid contamination at all costs.
Has anyone considered going to a local close out store (like a Big Lots) to see if some stock of Visine LR made it to their shelves? I went to one of my local Big Lots yesterday and my heart almost skipped a beat when I saw Visine boxes, but no LRs there.... but I'm letting you know I would have bought out the stock if I had found them. Just a thought for everyone
