Just for reference. I am a nurse and have a lot of experience with these meds as my brother is an addict. Suboxone is not an opiate. It is a synthetic drug created to attach to your opioid receptors in the brain. It works very well by tricking the brain into thinking that it has opiates in it. Subutex is simply the active ingredient in suboxone without the added naloxone which is a drug used to counteract opiates. Suboxone should not be showing up in a random 7,9 or 10 panel urine drug screen. There are however some expensive 11 and 13 panel drug screens commonly used by methadone and suboxone clinics that also test for suboxone and methadone. Most pre-employment drug screens are only looking for the usual street drugs such as cocaine, THC, barbiturates, amphetamines, opiates, and sometimes benzodiazepines. There is no way to know which drug screen someone will use unless they specify which panel ahead of time. If they say that it will be a 5,7 or 9 panel, you will most likely be safe as they are not looking for suboxone or methadone. Remember that employers usually pay for these drug screens themselves and they aren't going to spend the outrageous amount of money that the 11 and 13 panel screens cost. If you do test positive for suboxone or methadone I recommend telling the truth. If you are a recovering addict that means that you aren't a druggy anymore and that counts for a lot! Have faith in God who brought you to this new place in life and gave you this second or hundredth chance and who will not abandon you now! I am personally a big believer in suboxone and the good that it can do for lots of people but remember that it is only a tool to help get you better and not a cure. Make sure you work on the underlying issues that caused your addiction to begin with. I pray for all of you and am so glad that you have a new chance at life! God Bless!

I have NEVER tested POSITIVE for opiates in almost the last year from taking suboxone. The below post is incorrect. Suboxone IS a synthetic opiate but it metabolizes quite differently. It does not show up as an opiate, it shows up as exactly what it is-- BUPE!

I know this from personal EXPERIENCE, from my doctors and where my lab results come from. Unless they test for bupe you won't have any reading on your test, for opiates or otherwise!

In fact the only way you would test positive for opiate from suboxone would be if you put suboxone, film or tablet, directly in your urine. Then it obviously hasn't metabolized and will show as an opiate!

Facts people, NOT OPINION.

Verwon, you are not correct. I commented on this I thought but guess it didn't post.

Suboxone is BUPE. It is a SYNTHETIC OPIATE AND METABOLIZES DIFFERENTLY THAN AN ACTUAL OPIATE.

In fact the only way you would test positive for opiates is if you were trying to slick through your urine test and putting sub pieces DIRECTLY IN YOUR URINE.

In fact unless you are specifically tested for bupe then you don't have ANYTHING TO WORRY ABOUT.

Verwon, I know this from personal experience, my doctor verified this and from the company that issues my lab results.

These my amigos, are facts, not my opinion!

Suboxone is an opiate AGONIST, IT DOES NOT SHOW UP ON STANDARD OPIATE URINE TEST! IN ORDER FOR SUBOXONE TO SHOW UP, YOU WOULD HAVE TO TEST FOR IT SPECIFICALLY. PLEASE PEOPLE STOP PUTTING OUT INCORRECT INFORMATION. I AM AN RN WHO WAS ADDICTED TO OPIATES.I used suboxone to detox. I now work with an addictionologist

Negative for opiates. I take one every wk. They have to be looking for strictly for suboxone which is a very expensive drugtest. I get a script for suboxone and subutex! Neither tests pos. for opiates

I am a suboxone patient and I went to my dr today to get a new script and I had to take a urine drug test. My test can back positive for opiates and I'm in complete shock! I swear I haven't taken opiates in 6months and I have been taking suboxone as prescribed to me. How is this possible??? My dr gave me a 2week supply and told me in 2 weeks he will test again. How could the test come back positive for opiates???

False positive causes for opiates
Check out this link hun, maybe it will help convince your doc. It's not uncommon but addiction doctors are too used to hearing excuses and lies it makes it difficult for us to convince them when we really are telling the truth. Remind your doctor that the only reliable and completely accurate type of screen is BLOOD, volunteer for a sample and see what he says. Do not ever admit guilt, if your not you don't want that on your physician records.

I'm on probation and I've been taking subs. I recieved 2 UAs and they both tested positive for THC. I have smoked in 6 months so I'm thinking it happened because of the subs. I'm now be extended and I'm very upset. I don't know what to do.

Never heard if sub causing a false THC positive but there's other OTC and etc that can cause it. I'd demand a more in-depth test. If it's a standard saliva or urine analysis they are not 100% reliable and the people administering them usually are only minimally trained. I would offer yourself for a more accurate screen and don't admit your guilt if your not. FYI as well, my probation/local court now has bupe testing incorporated in the testing panel so if you're not prescribed, play it safe.

I am not prescribed Subs. The test was sent to the lab and was confirmed positive. I haven't taken any since my last failed UA, so hopefully the next UA will prove I haven't smoked marijuana. The UA I took was a 7 panel. Thanks for the reply.
