Unusual Opiode Side Effect

After many years of opiode use, encountering unusual side effect. Eyes swell, big red swollen circles ring eyes -- very ugly -- that skin becomes wrinkly, dry, rashy, itchy, eyes water. Feels like some type of hyper histamine attach, but no antihistimine prevents or eases consdition. Face also swells to some degree. Any thoughts?

Hi bridget,

When push comes to shove, I would definitely consider stopping those medications. Perhaps your body may just be trying to tell you that it doesn't want opioids anymore?

However, the symptoms you mentioned are commonly regarded as allergic reactions to opioid medication in and of itself; whereas taking an allergy pill wouldn't do anything because you're still taking what's causing the reactions to begin with.

Additionally, some medications list such symptoms as severe side effects that should be reported to your doctor immediately. All in all, I think it just boils down to having to take something else for pain management if this is how your body keeps responding to opioids.
