Trying To Wean Off
UpdatedI have had panic attacks for several years now. A few years ago my Dr. put me on .25 mg of Xanax as needed. I was fortunate, I only had to take one a couple times a month, if that.
A little over a month ago, for whatever reason, I hit an all time low with anxiety. Constant worry over stupid things and anxiety to the point I couldn't even eat. My Dr put me on Lexapro 10 mg and advised me to take the Xanax 2 x day to get over this hump. After about two weeks I started feeling pretty good again and decided to start decreasing the Xanax due to fear of becoming addicted. I think I decreased too fast and had a relapse. I went from two a day to 1/2 2 x day in a few days.
I called my Dr and he changed me from Lexapro to Celexa and told me not to worry about taking the Xanax as long as I felt I needed it.
I've felt great for over a week now and have decided to try again. This time I cut back to 1 1/2 a day and will continue this for about 2 weeks. Then cut back a half again.
I realize I am on a very low dose, but does that sound reasonable? I'm just so worried about having another relapse.

Xanax contains the active ingredient Alprazolam, this is a Benzodiazepine and these are notoriously addictive and hard to withdraw from, when you try to cut down, rebound effects are quite common. A very slow tapering of the dosage is normally required.
Did your doctor offer you an assistance in getting off the medication?
Other withdrawal effects you may experience can include: fever, chills, diarrhea and headaches.

Some more information on the Celexa, it contains the active ingredient Citalopram, this is an antidepressant.
Some of the most common side effects may include: nausea, drowsiness, headache and sweating.

Is there anything else I can help you with?
Verwon wrote that benzos are notoriously addictive and hard to withdraw from and that is the absolute truth. They are only really safe if taken once in a while. Steady use not only risks an addiction far worse than heroin, but it causes rebound anxiety, which is anxiety that is more intense than what Xanax was taken to treat. Taking these drugs for anxiety is simply a very bad idea. Go to www.thebenzobook.com or Amazon.com and look for The Benzo Book to learn more.
