Tinture Of Opium

I had my colon removed and now have a J-pouch. My stool is almost always runny and I take bulk laxative along with bentyl and imodium. During the day there is no problem but nights I set my alarm clock every 2 hours so I don' mess myself or the bed. Would the Tenture of opium help at night and is it addictive? I am a diabetic on an insulin pump.

I had my colon removed 10 years ago and have a j-pouch. I have about 12-15 bm's a day- always of pea soup consistency. Feels like I have tried every thing- leaving me with sclerosing cholangitis (liver disease). Seeing a new doc at Cleveland Clinic who is now suggesting Opium Tincture. After reading what I can find online, I just can't decide if this is for me. I work a 40+ hour week and some nights can be rough.... open to suggestions.
I was in the same situation as you, and have a J-pouch as well. I took Tincture of Opium for about 7 years. It does help at night time, slightly. There will still be issues, but it's main benefit I experienced was the fact that I would actually sleep, rather than constantly getting up. The fact that I needed to get up didn't change that much, I just continued sleeping through it. Sometimes it did help with actually not needing to get up that much.
I stopped after 7 years because it became a problem for me. I realized that really the medicine wasn't doing enough physically to continue to have it be a problem. It helped with stomach discomfort too, so it wasn't that awful being on it. Just wasn't right for me after a bit.
What has your doctor advised?
Opium tinctures can be addictive and cause serious side effects, so they should never be used without your doctor's approval.
