Tingling/burning Sensation After Stopping Metformin
UpdatedSo about a year ago I was prescribed Metformin because my doctor diagnosed me as pre-diabetic (she also said it would help with my PCOS as well). If I had known she was going to do a spot check on me that morning, I wouldn't have eaten cold pizza for breakfast. Anywho, since then I have been taking 500mg Metformin every night. I had lost 30 pounds with diet and exercise and she said I could stop taking it.
Well, I didn't stop and continued taking it. A couple months ago, I decided I would stop taking Metformin and see how everything would be. I soon developed a belly button yeast infection (gross!), I just felt...like crap. But my bloodsugar was normal the entire time. Maybe the belly button thing was a coincidence, who knows. When I stopped the Metformin, I would wake up to a numb hand every morning. Sometimes I'd wake up in the middle of the night to just a tingling/burning sensation. It was honestly terrifying to me.
So I started taking Metformin again and the tingling/burning sensations dissapeared.
I know Metformin can cause nerve damage. But what I've read was people having these issues when they're ON Metformin, not when they're off of it. I know I should discuss with a doctor but I recently moved and I haven't gotten insurance yet with my new job so...yeah.
I'm also a terrible patient for not following doctors orders.

The FDA doesn't list it as possibly causing nerve damage, they list its typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, hypoglycemia, and taste changes.
In most cases, when someone taking it experiences nerve damage, it is due to their being diabetic and not having it under good control, but I am not a doctor.
What are your usual blood sugar levels?
Eating pizza for breakfast wouldn't actually make much of a difference, (though I don't know how anyone can eat it cold!!! lol) a person who isn't prediabetic, or diabetic would process it like any other food, and they wouldn't get unusual blood sugar readings. My brother-in-law has been bouncing around with the prediabetes thing for a few years, now. They also check me, regularly, since my mother had it, and died very young due to not being diagnosed.
I am not saying that the blood sugar of people that aren't diagnosed with these issues never fluctuates, because it always will, just like blood pressure, but the levels let your doctor know if there is a potential problem.
Superb job on the weight loss! That is amazing!!!
And that doesn't make you a terrible patient, we all do such things, now and then. Sometimes we just don't think of all the possible repercussions. My husband has worked in radiography for about 25 years, and I think he has seen just about everything...... you know like the person told to not eat anything, before a certain test, but they did anyway..... or the woman told not to wear makeup, or nail polish before surgery, who came in wearing tons of both. LOL Thus, I say don't beat yourself up over it, but please do see a doctor, as soon as you can to have yourself checked out.
