Ticagrelor, Breathlessness

My father suffered from a heart attack 3 weeks ago and now they put him on Ticagrelor 90mg twice daily. Up until having the heart attack, my dad suffered no shortness of breath. Once being put on this tablet he began to feel like he was occasionally not getting enough air into his airways. This would happen at any time of the day/night. It was not so much a breathlessness from overexertion but as if for a few seconds his airways were blocked. Cardiac nurses were informed and said it was likely to be this tablet and to see how it goes. 3 weeks passed and still no change in the breathlessness, however, it was getting worse and happening more often. My father had a CT scan done prior to having a heart attack and they wrote back to him to say they found a nodule on one of his lungs - the added worry of this, along with the breathing difficulties very much made him anxious thinking it was a problem with his lungs or something more serious. After 3 weeks of suffering, they have changed his tablet to Clopidogrel 75mg once daily - after not taking Ticagrelor for 24 hours his breathing was completely back to normal. During the 3 weeks I read many patient stories on this breathing issue due to Ticagrelor - I needed reassurance and hope that this information can help someone suffering from the same thing. The stress from having a heart attack is immense and a life-changing experience for not just the person who has had the heart attack, but our whole family. The added pressure and worry of not being able to breathe properly should not be an added factor!

Difficulty breathing, or labored breathing are actually listed as very common side effects of Ticagrelor, according to NIH studies.

While they can be worrisome, side effects are just a hazard of taking any given medication, and not everyone experiences all of them. I am very sorry this added additional fear to the burden your family already carries.

Is he still doing well on the Clopidogrel? The U.S. FDA lists its typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, easy bruising, and increased risk of bleeding.
