Theophylline Discontinued (Page 2) (Top voted first)
UpdatedI have been told that theophylline er is being discontinued. Is this true? I have taken it for years for asthma.
Success. I called my Rite-Aid and asked them to search their database for other pharmacies that might have it and they located one with 165 tablets of the 200 mg in stock. Hopefully by the time all the drugstores run out, the manufacturers will start shipping again.
I am sorry to say that it has been discontinued. My physician just called me an hour ago and told me that I now have to take the 300 mg ER tablets. I won't be surprised if they discontinue this medicine all together. it said that there is a shortage and the pharmacy will not make it anymore?
I was told by several pharmacists that the active ingredient used to make this medication can make more money for the manufacturer to sell to the company who makes Musinex, rather than produce this generic pill. There is some stock in the 400mg supply randomly around the country, but smaller supply every day. 100's used for cat and dogs, is pretty much out. Yesterday I was told the liquid version, expected to be used by vets, contains Sorbital, which is not recommended for animal use. I called 16 pharmacies yesterday, no luck. I have 100 100mg pills left.
So those of us who depend on this medication to live, because we cannot tolerate other meds such as those with corticosteroids in them...we get to die because they want more money? This is such bulls***. Damn.
Compounding pharmacies will make it up specially but at double or triple the cost. Nice way to drive up prices at the expense of the consumer who can't do without the medication.
I received my 450 mg Theophylline ER from CVS/Caremark and it lists the manufacturer as Alembic PH, which is a pharmaceutical company in India. From what I've found, one manufacturer has stopped making it...but there are others.
My pharmacy can't get theophylline. They have tried all of their sources & can't get it. According to the online information, Major/Treva are not currently making this drug w/ no reason. I've taken theophylline for 16 years. Not sure what my doc will prescribe.
Yes i have been on Theophyolline for about 8 years now and just in the past two months first Walgreens discontinued it and then i went to CVS and now they just told me they weren't able to get it anymore because it's not used that much anymore. The only reason I went off Advair was because i have high eye pressure and thought this might be a contributing factor, but i guess i have no choice now.
I'm in samea boat. Have bn taking it for about 10 years, and now they quit making it. I guess there is something new or old out there with the inhalors. Guess we have no choice. Will have to call dr tomorrow. Hope you get situated also
I'm really in trouble then, because I can't tolerate the variety of inhalers with the corticosteroids in them. I swell up, have trouble breathing, and itch when I take steroids. The only thing that works for me is Theophylline.
I just called my physician to see if she will be able to work with me on another form of medication, not steroids. I also submitted my story to CNN's Chief Medical Advisor Dr Sanjay Gupta. for review. Maybe a lot of you can go to CNNS website and submit your story. Please work on getting our medicine back!! We need it to live!!!
The info I've been consistently given is one manufacturer is no longer making the drug; the other has it on back order. I have been able to get various strengths filled primarily thru CVS. I pray the back order status changes soon as this drug is the only thing that relieves my severe asthma (like others!).
Plus....I can't believe the pharmaceutical companies discontinued this drug due to it's negative side effects, as they push Statin medications, which are HORRIBLE and very damaging, along with Qunoline drugs which have horrible side effects and oh so many other medications that are very damaging to the body.
This is about profit or lack of it.
Just wanted to let you that Alembic Pharmaceuticals out of Bridgewater New Jersey is manufacturing 300 and 450 milligram ER tablets now. I talked to them this morning June 22nd 2016 and this medicine is currently in production. I told the representative about the plight of all of you on this blog. I have been on the long search for Theophylline ER for my pup, Penny. When I get to work, I will forward this blog to the sales representative and he said he would send Distributing information of this drug to all of you. I hope this helps all of you and your pets also.
Thank you, Mikeincalif!!! Any specific info you provide, such as manufacturer, goes a long way to find a solution.
Thanks Mike in CA. I hope that the rep can find a way to contact all of us, but then our pharmacies would be the ones to be ordering it. The manufacturer I contacted said they had no idea when they would be producing it again.
Yes, thank you, Mike in CA. Best news for all of us who need this drug to breathe!
This is kind of long, but below I've listed known makers of Theo and what they're producing right now. My cat's on 100 mg for asthma. We've been getting the 400 mg pills and my vet's office quarters them for us. Theo tends to crumble and for the ER version, too small pieces or liquid compounded versions may stop being extended release. That's why I have a professional cut the pills for me. Most pharmacies will cut pills for me (mine won't). A good vet/doctor/etc. likely will too.
The pharmaceutical company Major stopped making does below 400 mg. No reason given.
Teva has suspended all production due to "Requirements related to complying with good manufacturing practices." (Source: FDA) Estimated return to the market - Spring 2017

I am now able to get Theophylline 200 mg er in Illinois. The copay through Walgreens and BCBS of IL has increased from $10.00 to $75.00. I checked around and I can get a 30 day supply from CVS for $15.00. It is now available through the new manufacturer. I gave the info posted on August 12, 2016 by Brownwyn to my pharmacist and he ordered it through his wholesaler.
Just received my Theophylline, as ordered, from CareFirst Rx. What a relief. No more searching! Can you see the big smile on my dog's face?
