Tegretol Side Effects
UpdatedI have trigeminal neuralgia and my doctor ordered 200mg tegretol two times a day. After day 2 of taking this medicine, I noticed nose bleeds and bleeding from lower areas that are not supposed to bleed. Anyway, wondering how long it will take to get out of my system and would there be any lingering effects that I'd need to see the doctor again for? Oh, and where the heck is this blood coming from? I have no insurance and pay cash for each visit so I am trying to be cheap here!

Hello, Laura! How are you? I'm sorry about the problem that you're having.
This medication has been known to cause blood in the urine and stool, as reported by the FDA, though that is a very rare side effect. You may also experience rapid weight gain, trembling, nausea, dizziness and trouble concentrating.
Yes, you should have it checked out by your doctor to be safe, because there's always a risk that there is some other cause.
However, if you were only taking it for 2 days, it shouldn't take long for its side effects to go away, perhaps a week, at most.
Are you still bleeding?
Thank you for your response...I quit taking the medicine and seemed to be back to normal after a few days. I have made an appointment with the doctor, so I am hoping that we have better luck with something new.
That's great!! Did your doctor recommend anything new to try?
Verwin.
May i ask what your occupation is?
As you seem to know about tegretol, i have a question that no-one seems to want to give me an answer to, nor can i find a listing for it.
If taking tegretol causes or worsens aplastic anemia, will the condition improve and diminish after ceasing this medication?
Any information on this from anyone is much appreciated.
I am Doc. I started having head, facial and eye pain in February 2016. My neurologist put me on Aptiom 50mg, Lyrics75 mg and Hydrocodone 10/375mg. I had several attacks everyday and night for one month. In the second week of March 2016. I started having multiple attacks that drove me almost mad. The pain was very severe beyond words. My TN was diagnosed at John Hopkins Neurological Center in Baltimore MD. The MRI showed that two blood vessels in my left side of my head collapsed on the Trigeminal nerve. I was asked what type of surgery I would like. I choose Microvascular decompression. I had seizures, migraines, burning, and total left head and facial pain over 15 attacks or more before surgery. I had the surgery on April 22, 2016. Dr. Lim was my surgeon and I was happy to get it done. I was in the hospital for three days. I had only one attack after surgery the same day and it stopped. Now I am healing. Very time consuming to heal being a diabetic. I have some pain and burning, but it is manageable with lyrica and Hydrocodone. I am feeling better as the weeks go bye. I was told it will take about 6 to 18 months to heal. I am able to take care of my large home and I am retired. If you have a bad case of Trigeminal Neuralgia, you can qualify for SSDI or SSI. Also, if you can not work because of this disabling illness. You can receive short and long term disability income from your job if your are insured. I hope this will help all of you that have TN. Bless you...
Some tegretol side effects are long lasting and will never go away.
Has anyone experienced shortness of breath on Tegretol? I'm currently on 300 mg/day. Have been on this medication a little over 1 month. Also occasionally experience hot flashes. Normal? This medication has been a god send otherwise.
Thanks in advance.
Re: Michelle (# 7)
I too have experienced hot flashes and thought Oh No! Not that again. The drug has been a God send for me but I absolutely hate taking medication every day.
Hello. I have Trigeminal Neuralgia also. I take 800mg Tegretol a day and 300 Lyrica as well. Tegretol is a horrible drug. I had to give up my job I loved because It made me dizzy. As well as that, all logic went out the window and I just could not think at all. I seem to be in remission at the moment and I am slowly backing off the drug (25mg per week) but I don't know how low I can go before I get that excruciating electric-shock pain. It also wrecks your liver. I have been on it since 2014. The full list of side-effects is horrible. Ask your doctor for a different drug if you can.
