Tapering Off Subutex While Pregnant (Page 2) (Top voted first)

Updated

My wife is pregnant and I just found out she has been taking Subutex for several months.

To make matters worse she's been trying to taper off this drug under the advise of someone she met at other forums. She hasn't let the doctor know she's been taking this drug and this guy has her convinced he can taper her off without harming the baby. I'm besides myself and trying to get her to at least let the doctor monitor her progress on a regular basis while she gets off this stuff.

Is this really safe for her to be doing or am I right in thinking she's lost her mind trusting this person?

Amber I am 22 weeks pregnant. I have tapered down to 2 mg of subutex as of today. I will be done taking subutex completely this week after 5 years on suboxone. I say start tapering now! I don't care what everyone says about subutex being safe during pregnancy. Taper slow so you feel no w/D's. Keep us updated!

@ Ash, come on now sweetie, I understand someone's frustration when having concern for a new born or not - yet - born but just because you don't have that struggle doesn't mean other people don't. @ Mc is looking for helpful advise because she is concerned for the well being of her infant. Remarks to degrade her are not necessary

I am on subutex and was told by my doctor to stay on it throught my pregnancy. They feel its safest. I just want to know how the baby will be when born. I am 21 weeks pregnany now. The doctors need a special license to prescribe it and barely give it to me.

Hey Steph, if anyone tries to hassle you, refuse to speak to them. You've done nothing wrong. I've dealt with CPS on both sides of the spectrum, worked with and been investigated by, and I have come to the horrible conclusion that the majority of LSWs do not have your families best interest at heart.

Be polite, if any caseworker does try to spesk with you, but firm and knowledgeable about your rights. The bottom line, no matter ANYONE'S personal opinion of sub treatment, is subutex is considered safe and approved by the FDA for treatment throughout pregnancy and breastfeeding. If this happens, do not sign any consent forms or release forms for your or your babies medical history and if you find anything is released without your permission, hunny you'll have one heck of a lawsuit under the hippa act. If you feel the need to verify you're prescribed subutex, speak with your doctor, make him aware of any allegations or investigation by CPS and only let him release the information verifying he is your prescribing physician, you're a model patient and to remind these baby snatchers that subutex is a safe medication approved for use by our government department of food and drug administration. Any argument on their part is null and void, unless they have PROOF of abuse or neglect, tell them any further contact must be written and you expect their investigation in your family to be closed or you'll consider taking legal action.

Just keep in mind that CPS caseworkers are immune to perjury, so make anyone of them aware you are recording all conversations.

Good luck and if you need anymore advice about how to handle this corrupt government corporation, please message us on here :)

I believe it's highly illegal for a doctor to take you off subutex while pregnant. But try and struggle thru any more morning sickness soyou ddon't get kicked out of the program after u have the baby. It's a crucial time and change in your life having a new baby and in no way would it be healthy for u or your child to have to go without your medicine and possible relapse just for a Lil weed...I know it's just weed but still that's the rules of the program...plus you can breastfeed on subutex and tapper to lower doses after the baby is born....don't let a doctor tell u u can't breastfeed on subutex....just not suboxen...hope this helps...goodluck

Just had NY baby in January. I lowered the dose till I was just taking .1 mg everyday. Very little w/D's. This was all around 30 weeks prego. Get off as soon as you can with a taper regiment. I'm 3 months post partum and feel great!

Wow! ConcernedDad, I am very disturbed to learn of what has happened and I really wish the best for you, your wife and your child.

On our site, we can provide people with medication information, such as what they are used for, side effects and etc. but we never advise any type of treatments and we do get people that ask us to do so a lot. However, ONLY a doctor is qualified to advise in such matters, diagnose, treat and etc.

However, as Betsey has stated, Subutex is the one that is generally considered safe to use during pregnancy, but again, even under that consideration, the use and dosage should always be monitored by a doctor, for the health of both the mother and baby.

Her doctor should be able to consult with a colleague that's been specially trained in the use of Subutex, so it is a very good thing that she finally came clean and is getting professional medical help.

How is she doing?

You should seek the advice from a doctor. The info I have found is that it must be done very very slowly. It is not recommended because there is a chance of miscarriage. My doctor had told me that he could taper me off but I just don't trust the situation. Some say yes and some say definitely not. I have seen posts though that you can wean down but not off. If the baby is going through withdrawals though your not gonna know. And when the baby is born there doesn't seen to be any correlation of what mg will send him into withdrawal. Someone can be on 8 mg and be fine while some one is on 2 and not be fine. That is the same as the incidences of miscarriage...some have been stopping from 2 mg and some more. If you don't want to speak to a doctor about this at least call the hear to help program through suboxone.com. But I do get it. I wish I could come off this before I give birth so I don't have to deal with the stigma of the hospital staff. The dreaded visit from dyfs that could happen and I really want to breastfeed without the doctor telling me they are not sure if it's a good idea. (although I have read that breastfeeding on a low dose ie 1-2 mg should be fine cause the amount that actually goes into the babies system is so low) but really it's about doing what is best for the baby. And I think the safest and surest way is to stay on if you have been on. I was all set to come off too but.my doctor said the baby could die from withdrawals. It's not likely but neither is getting struck by lightning or bit by a shark. And we all know that happens. Well sorry for the rambling in. I'm apparently over tired. Good luck.

No dose of subutex is "safe" during pregnancy! If you can stop taking the medication without going back to using then please do so. My sub doctor told me many times my dose was low enough that my baby more then likley would not go through withdrawl. I was on 2mg then went down to 1mg the last month of my pregnancy and the doctors in the nicu still claimed my baby was going through wihdrawls and treated my child with methadone. I can not even begin to explain what a nightmare it is to have this happen to your child. If I could do it over again I would of got off the subutex right when I found out I was pregnant. Instead I listened to a doctor and belived my dose was low enough and my child would be fine. Again if subutex is the only way to not use then stay on it but if you are just scared of withdrawl then taper down and get it out of your system ASAP

I hear of ppl complaining cause the baby is in the nursery some being treated with. methadone, this is bad practise,it shld never be used on babies .The best part of my experience waas a great team of medical staff who specialised in this area also i studied the nas scoring system and was thereveverytime they scored my son.Its important to be there through this process and to work with drs during pregnancy so they see you are doing the right thing

I use heroin daily and just found out I'm prego. I already had a miscarriage when I tried to quit heroin in a previous pregnacy. I'm absolutly terrified to do that again but I DO NOT want mi baby to suffer for mi mistakes. I want to go get on subutex or methadone or something that will help me but I'm worried about how much that would harm the baby too. I'm only a month prego idk what to do both me and mi fiance have done heroin for the past 5 years almost daily. I know that the withdrawl would kill the baby as it did before. So which. Is the safest way for the baby idc what it does to me as long as mi baby comes happy and healthy

A friend of mine has been on subutex has been through two pregnancies on it. The only experience I have is from what she told me. I'll share her experiences with you!

The main issue she had was the hospital staff treating her terribly, assuming she was some strung out heroin addict who didn't love her children, she's an excellent mother and was on a minimal amount of subutex under doctors supervision, doctor was also part if the Maine legislation. All this was investigated by Maine CPS and unfounded and her children were born with very minimal withdraws and no side effects, but everyone is different.

Maybe let your ob/gyn confer with your subutex doctor? ? That way both sides are completely aware of the pros and cons. With any FDA approved medication there are always pros and cons but to be approved the pros have to outweigh the cons. And obviously taking a medication under doc supervision has to be much less riskier then using.

Good luck, please share your experience with us :)
