Tapering Off Subutex While Pregnant (Page 2)
(Newest replies first)

Updated

My wife is pregnant and I just found out she has been taking Subutex for several months.

To make matters worse she's been trying to taper off this drug under the advise of someone she met at other forums. She hasn't let the doctor know she's been taking this drug and this guy has her convinced he can taper her off without harming the baby. I'm besides myself and trying to get her to at least let the doctor monitor her progress on a regular basis while she gets off this stuff.

Is this really safe for her to be doing or am I right in thinking she's lost her mind trusting this person?

its the comfort of the baby as well who are you. The withdrawel could cause miscarriage who are you to say anything to anyone. I was on suboxone for 6 months then found out i was pregnant so i had to switch to subutex i was willing to come off of it for my baby 13 different obgyns and my suboxone dr and my pharmacist said i was better of to stay on subutex then withdrawel and loose the baby. So you think we should rather loose the baby then worry about the withdrawel no its not right to do it without scripts or without drs advice but you are neither

I believe it's highly illegal for a doctor to take you off subutex while pregnant. But try and struggle thru any more morning sickness soyou ddon't get kicked out of the program after u have the baby. It's a crucial time and change in your life having a new baby and in no way would it be healthy for u or your child to have to go without your medicine and possible relapse just for a Lil weed...I know it's just weed but still that's the rules of the program...plus you can breastfeed on subutex and tapper to lower doses after the baby is born....don't let a doctor tell u u can't breastfeed on subutex....just not suboxen...hope this helps...goodluck

PLEASE ANYONE reading this... I startd on 6 mgs of subs. Then 3 months later I found out I was pregnant. I wanted to start my taper RIGHT away as soon as I found out, But my Subs DR. told me its very dangerous to taper in first trimester, so I listened. As soon as I hit 14 weeks, I started to taper. IM now 24 weeks, and down to 3 mg 4 days a week, and 2 MG 3 days a wek and feel fine! no W/Ds.. My Dr has said numerous times that th general consensus is that its best to stay on, But I disagree 100%! SO I have had to beg and reassure every visit that Im POSITIVE im wanting to tapr and be off! I'll be fine , and I NEED to get off atleast one month befor im due! Its so hard to find any forums or stories of a woman that tapered off befor delivery! ALl the Drs seem to convince us to stay on! and some drs wont even allow tapering while preg and I don't gt why! Apparently th concern of the Drs is that they don't want women relapsing after thir off Subs and doing drugs again! witch in some cases is true, BUT in my case, I havnt touched a thing since the min I found out I was preg! and I want nothing more to get off atleast one month before my due date...If anyone can get back to me it would be so appreciated !!! I just want some reassurance that there are moms out there who tapered completeyly off while pregnant witout harming the baby! I believe that if your still using subs till the delivery, the COns are sooo much worse! the baby will more then likely WD and have to stay in hospital and be exposed to morphine, The CAS will prob be there, you wont be able to breast feed. where as the PROS are your baby will be able to develpoe for a month with no exposure to chemicals, your baby will have no WDS and you can breast feed with out worrying your putting drugs in the babys system! ETC I don't understand why drs are so Adamant about people staying on this while pregnant! I really don't get it ... IN some cases yes, but when someone is clean from every drug and thers no chance of WD and they want off, WHY is it so hard to get support to taper off this stuff??IM so depressed and upset about having to take this stuff everyday! it kills me knowing my baby girl is exposed to this stuff in the womb. :( CAn someone let me know they tapered off before Birth/delivery and the baby was ok?? Thanks so much.. and to the moms in my sitch, stay striong and stick up for your self against the DRS who are trying to convince you to stay on it!! write out a list of pros and cons! My emails {edited for privacy} anyone need to talk or give/get advice email me .. your not alone. IVE been stressing about this for so long..

As long as you get off them at least 2 to 3 weeks before giving birth baby should not have any w/d symptoms!!

Hey Steph, if anyone tries to hassle you, refuse to speak to them. You've done nothing wrong. I've dealt with CPS on both sides of the spectrum, worked with and been investigated by, and I have come to the horrible conclusion that the majority of LSWs do not have your families best interest at heart.

Be polite, if any caseworker does try to spesk with you, but firm and knowledgeable about your rights. The bottom line, no matter ANYONE'S personal opinion of sub treatment, is subutex is considered safe and approved by the FDA for treatment throughout pregnancy and breastfeeding. If this happens, do not sign any consent forms or release forms for your or your babies medical history and if you find anything is released without your permission, hunny you'll have one heck of a lawsuit under the hippa act. If you feel the need to verify you're prescribed subutex, speak with your doctor, make him aware of any allegations or investigation by CPS and only let him release the information verifying he is your prescribing physician, you're a model patient and to remind these baby snatchers that subutex is a safe medication approved for use by our government department of food and drug administration. Any argument on their part is null and void, unless they have PROOF of abuse or neglect, tell them any further contact must be written and you expect their investigation in your family to be closed or you'll consider taking legal action.

Just keep in mind that CPS caseworkers are immune to perjury, so make anyone of them aware you are recording all conversations.

Good luck and if you need anymore advice about how to handle this corrupt government corporation, please message us on here :)

A friend of mine has been on subutex has been through two pregnancies on it. The only experience I have is from what she told me. I'll share her experiences with you!

The main issue she had was the hospital staff treating her terribly, assuming she was some strung out heroin addict who didn't love her children, she's an excellent mother and was on a minimal amount of subutex under doctors supervision, doctor was also part if the Maine legislation. All this was investigated by Maine CPS and unfounded and her children were born with very minimal withdraws and no side effects, but everyone is different.

Maybe let your ob/gyn confer with your subutex doctor? ? That way both sides are completely aware of the pros and cons. With any FDA approved medication there are always pros and cons but to be approved the pros have to outweigh the cons. And obviously taking a medication under doc supervision has to be much less riskier then using.

Good luck, please share your experience with us :)

I am on subutex and was told by my doctor to stay on it throught my pregnancy. They feel its safest. I just want to know how the baby will be when born. I am 21 weeks pregnany now. The doctors need a special license to prescribe it and barely give it to me.

Sunshyne, you must be off somehow to regard any advice I gave in my comment as derogatory.

Generally speaking, when someone asks for advice that's usually what they're looking for. Not sugar coated answers they want to hear.

FYI, I lost two children due to my prior drug addiction, don't make assumptions about people you don't know and thus make careless and rude remar. Then maybe reread my post, you should (if you posses the capacities of empathy and understanding) find it quite polite.

Now stop being a troll and contribute some helpful information.

@ Ash, come on now sweetie, I understand someone's frustration when having concern for a new born or not - yet - born but just because you don't have that struggle doesn't mean other people don't. @ Mc is looking for helpful advise because she is concerned for the well being of her infant. Remarks to degrade her are not necessary

I use heroin daily and just found out I'm prego. I already had a miscarriage when I tried to quit heroin in a previous pregnacy. I'm absolutly terrified to do that again but I DO NOT want mi baby to suffer for mi mistakes. I want to go get on subutex or methadone or something that will help me but I'm worried about how much that would harm the baby too. I'm only a month prego idk what to do both me and mi fiance have done heroin for the past 5 years almost daily. I know that the withdrawl would kill the baby as it did before. So which. Is the safest way for the baby idc what it does to me as long as mi baby comes happy and healthy

I hear of ppl complaining cause the baby is in the nursery some being treated with. methadone, this is bad practise,it shld never be used on babies .The best part of my experience waas a great team of medical staff who specialised in this area also i studied the nas scoring system and was thereveverytime they scored my son.Its important to be there through this process and to work with drs during pregnancy so they see you are doing the right thing

I have just had a baby whilst being on subutex, the first thing to know is that tapering is the worst idea and also dangerous for mum and bub,if mum is feeling withdrawals bub is suffering,It is true that newborn withdrawal is very likely ,i was fortunate to have no significant symptoms baby didn't need meds or special care and i beleive it was was in part due to taking care pf us during pregnancy i quit smoking ate well excersized and when he was.born i had him on my chest immediatly and began to breastfeed,i believe these babies do better when they are held close to mum spend those first days doing nothing but holding and filling baby with milk although many other factors. most out of our control will dictate the outcome of your baby being born on bup but its a small paart of your jouney and if you do the right thing you will start you journey into motherhood with confidence in yourself

A subutex withdrawl is nothing like crack withdrawl way to try and freak someone out why don't you stick to the question at hand and facts rather than talking about something you obviously know nothing about ! If you brought up a baby goiung through crack withdrawl you obviously know nothing about subutex !
