Tapering Off Ativan

I have been tapering off of Ativan (name brand) 2 mg per day going on 8 days now. The cost is one big reason I decided to do so (now $700 for a one months supply) and also I would like to be set free from this. I have been on this medication for over 25+ years. Has anyone had success getting completely off of this medication? Do you recommend something else to replace it that would be a safer choice. I have had a severe panic/anxiety disorder for a long time. I used to take 3 mg, but felt almost normal lately on 2 mg....until the cost went up. I have tried cognitive behavioral therapy in the past. (The best part about it was just having someone to talk to about my anxiety/panic, etc).

Please don't do too rapid of a taper, because that creates the risk of seizures. Have you consulted your doctor?

Generally the preferred method now is to have the person start skipping doses, such as taking it every other day for a week, then skipping two days for a week and so on.

Alternatively, you could also try asking your pharmacist which benzodiazepine is cheaper and ask your doctor to prescribe an equivalent dose of it, instead.

How can my son safely titrate off ativan? It seemed that he moved from 3mg.per day to 2 mg. per day quickly. The next step to 11/2 mg. hasn't gone very well. One Dr. wants him to on anti-psychotic meds. My son doesn't want to be on anything but his anxiety is extremely high.
