Type 1 Diabetic Girl 7 Yr - Glycomet 250

My doughter is 7 yr old & Type 1 diabetic since last 8-9 months, Recently docter has advised Tab GLYCOMET 250 twice daily along with insulin. Pl advice is it safe for her & what will be the side effect on her in terms of long run.
Which other oral medicine is helpfull in case of Type 1 diabeties.
Please advice insulin pumps are advisable for her & how much its cost and which make is trusted one.

Hi, Raja! Sorry to hear about your daughters medical issue.

Glycomet contains the active ingredient Metformin, it is an effective oral anti-diabetic medication. For the most effectiveness, she should take it just before a meal, so it has time to start working by the time she is done eating and will need the most help controlling her blood sugar.

Things would be much more risky for her in the long run, if she doesn't use the medications to help control her blood sugar. Letting the levels run high all the time can lead to organ failure, blindness and may even be fatal, so she's much better off taking them as prescribed.

As to any other medications or an insulin pump, you should discuss those options with her doctor.

What are her blood sugar levels on the current medications?

After the start of this medicine blood sugar level varies in between 60 to 150, where as without this medicine(Glycomet 250) & only on insulin it was varying in between 60 to 450. As advised by Doctor she is taking this medicine after meal . Please note she is TYPE 1 diabetic.
Now I am more worried for the side effect of "Glycomet 250" in long run as she is taking twice a day in age of 8 yrs .
What we should take care to minimize the side effect? Please advice.
