Synasma Side Effects
UpdatedDear Sir,
I am 65 years old, weighing 69 kgs and enjoying sound health. I am a diabetic since 51 years old but under very good control with Glyree 4 in the morning and Citapin 500 in the night and more so with food regulations and exercises. I walk 5 kms everyday in the morning and do some physical exercises also. Right from my college days onwards I used to do regular physical exercises with dumb bells and bar bells lasting nearly for thirty to forty minutes almost most of the week days. Exercising with dumb bells and bar bells was considerably reduced if not fully after my forties. Still I used to include dumb bells may be for 5 to 10 minutes along with my other stretching exercises. My allergic asthma started during my early forties especially when climatic changes were there. I do not know whether the tablets, which I used for asthma, caused the diabetes. The frequency of asthmatic attack increased after my fifties. I am living in a coastal city of West Coast of India. My doctor has been prescribing different tablets for my asthmatic attacks. Some times I had nebulisations also. Of late he was prescribing Lavasma and along with that I was using inhaler (Ventorlin, Salbutamol Inhalation IP). As Lavasma did not give full relief, my doctor changed it to Synasma 400mg; one in the morning and one in the night for 10 days and asked me to continue for another 10 days if the desired result was not achieved. Incidentally after starting with Synasma tablets, I had a lot of irritation and felt some uncomfortable feeling. On the fourth day evening (March 23) since I was put under Synasma 400 tablet, while I was shopping, I felt a sudden release of stress inside my central upper head (a horizontal twist releasing sudden stress) following which I became unconscious; may be within 1 second. There after as per the description of my wife and daughter, I had seizure but I did not fall and I was struggling to keep myself standing. With the help of others, I was kept on the floor and my daughter observed a little froth on my mouth and blood as I bit my tongue. I was taken to the nearby hospital, where I had an MRI scan, which showed normal conditions. When I was taken to for MRI scan I vomited most of the lunch intake of food. I was not fully conscious on the night when I was admitted to the ICU except answering some questions and identifying some persons when I was asked to identify. Although I was admitted to the ICU, the next day morning I felt as active as ever. It rained heavily in the late night and the noise of which also I still remember. As the MRI scan was normal, the doctor advised me to withdraw all the asthmatic tablets and asked me to use only the inhaler. I was discharged after 3 days. After five days since the event, I had a second counseling with a neurologist, who advised to have an MR angio for neck and cerebral. The results showed normal. He also suggested withdrawing the asthmatic tablets. As per the first doctor’s prescription I am now using Eptoin 100mg in the morning and in the night. Besides he has prescribed Plagerine for night time. I am continuing my diabetic medicines; Glyree 4 and Citapin 500 along with these medicines. After starting Eptoin, I feel most of the time comfortable but at times some kind of minor stress in the forehead or upper left or right side of the head and at times backside of the head; but not to the extent of disturbing my routine work.
I would like to clarify the following:
1. Whether the seizure was caused due to the side effects of asthmatic medicines like Synasma?
2. Or due to other factors connected with my nervous systems?
3. Whether the diagnosis is correct so as to put me under Eptoin 100mg?
4. Whether the minor stresses are the aftermath of the seizure?
5. How long I should continue Eptoin and Plagerine?

Synasma contains the active ingredient Doxofylline and, if seizures occur from taking it, it usually because of an overdose, thus you may have been on too high of a dosage of the medication for your body.

The Eptoin contains Phenytoin Sodium and it is commonly give to prevent seizures, so them putting you on it, to try to prevent a recurrence is perfectly normal.
Even though they have had you stop the other medication, it can still take a long time to completely process out of your body, so there can still be a risk of further seizures. Thus, you should follow your doctor's advice for how long to continue using this.
Plagerine contains the active ingredient Clopidogrel, it is used to prevent blood clotting, so to be honest, if they found no evidence of problems on your tests, this is the one that confuses me.

I can't say why your doctor gave it to you and I would suggest asking them.
As to the stresses, that could be caused by either one of these medications.
Is there anything else I can help with?
