Suprep Reviews (Page 11) (Top voted first)
UpdatedHas anyone used the new SUPREP kit before a colonoscopy?
Would like any comments about taste, ease or side effects.
Thanks!
Before using the stuff, I read a bunch of reviews: The net for me was that suprep does have a 'cherry sweet/awful' taste. Cool the prep and mixing water, used room temp water for the 2 glass 16 oz followers. Drink it fast, wait about 10 minutes and then a lot of visits to the WC. Have a new roll of paper. Do it again as prescribed and that is it. It worked much better than the older stuff. After about 2 1/2 hours, the show was over each time. No cramps, headaches, vomit, etc. Just a some what unpleasant 2 days.
Just started first battle at 5:20p. Stuff does taste bad. 6oz of suprep mixed with 6oz of water and 4oz of Gatorade. Still nasty. Got done drinking mixture at 5:30pm. Big gulps followed by little sips of ginger ale. Let you know when things start to move. Feel little bloated and half way done with first 16 oz of water.
This stuff is absolutely the worst! I've thrown up, broke out in a sweat that drenched me in a matter of minutes, now I'm freezing and haven't started the second bottle. All I want to do is throw up and the idea of having to drink more is overwhelming. There has to be something better!!
This is a great thread, and was very helpful. I am just back from my first colonoscopy experience, and first Suprep experience. These posts helped me feel at ease and I want to pay that feeling forward! Mine was $60 with insurance, I was surprised, but what can you do these days?
I didn't find the first dose to be terrible, I had more of a hard time with the liquid diet before that, which made me feel nauseous. My doctor's office recommended a liquid protein drink that tasted so bad that it gave me a headache for which I successfully took two tylenol. Another good tip I read was to buy regular chicken soup and strain out the broth rather than buying that awful tasteless cooking broth - it was SO SAVORY. I did the same with wonton soup, but that actually upset my stomach. I tried the straw for the Suprep, but not enough got through at a time. Gulping was better, and the lemon licking in between helped a lot, too. It's tough to gulp down the 32 additional ounces of water.
My first dose took at least an hour and a half to work (from 5pm), but I had gone right before it (who does that??!) due to the wonton soup, I guess. Once it worked, I was in and out of the bathroom for a couple of hours - what came out looked like the strained soups all night! I slept from about 8-9, bathroom break, and then 10-3:30 when I had to get up for the second dose.
Second dose was not as easy, as it tastes horrendous at 3:45am but I got down about 4/5 of it and then turned to the water. I only had an hour till I was cut off from fluids. Within an hour, what came out was clear yellow and I could see the bottom of the bowl. I felt better by this time, just hungry.
After that, the rest was not bad at all. The feeling I got when the anesthesia went in made my face feel like the way Snapchat maps out faces for the filters but that lasted two seconds and then I was waking up drunk in recovery. I am clear for ten years! Nothing to worry about but the hemorrhoids that I already knew I had, and now I have a picture of them :-)
I'd do the Suprep again, gross as it was. I also did a low fiber diet for the couple of days before the liquid diet. Did it help? Who knows. All I know is that it's true it was way worse in my imagination than it was in reality, and I am high anxiety. Good luck to everyone reading this because it's time for your first one :-)
I used the Suprep Bowel Kit for the first time two days ago. For my past colonoscopies I have used both GoLytely and Nulytely, both of which are polypropylene glycol (PEG) based. IMO the Suprep is superior to the other two prep kits. I can only describe the PEG kits as “violent” expulsion. As per doctor’s instruction, I took my first dose at 6 p.m. and my second dose at 11 p.m. My procedure was scheduled for 8 a.m. the following day, with a 7 a.m. arrival. I had an hour’s drive to the where the procedure was held. I was cleaned out by the time I left home, but kept a moisture barrier underpad on the seat of the car, used a sanitary pad in my panties and brought some extra panties and sanitary pads along. My husband drove me there and home.
I found the taste of Suprep resembled cherry cough syrup with a lot of salt. I suppose the salts are added to balance electrolytes. I chilled the Suprep bottles as well as the water I used to bring the amount to the Fill Line on the cup provided in the kit. I drank all of the mixture in several swallows and in between each swallow I sucked on a lemon wedge to mask the saltiness, as I found this drink too salty for my taste. (Note: you need to drink this mixture immediately, not over an hour as some people seem to think). I then drank the instructed 32 ounces of water within an hour. I used one of these tall plastic cups that come with a lid and straw that you can purchase anywhere these days. I just walked around my home doing little chores while sipping my water. Moving around is the best way to get your bowels moving, prep or no prep. Results occurred within two hours and were easier to pass than when I used the PEG kits.
On the web I found several helpful hints to colonoscopy prep. Using the lemon is one of these hints, as well as using the softest toilet tissue you can find. Applying Vaseline near the rectum area helps elevate irritation and using hemorrhoid treatments of your choice. Keep some things of your choosing within arm’s reach of the toilet to help pass the time while in there. Keep an extra supply of TP nearby and plenty of water to drink as this will make elimination easier and help clean you out sooner. I had read that some people felt very chilled as the evening went on and since I feel the cold easily I wore several top layers under my dress. Wearing a dress eliminated need to take time to pull down shorts/jeans. I used an old bath towel to cover my legs and feet. My suggestion is, whatever you wear, it be old or something you don’t mind getting poo on in case that happens.
I spent most of my time on the toilet after the 11 p.m. dose. From midnight to 3 a.m., I couldn’t leave the toilet. This is where my tablet came in handy as I listened to an audio book.
One of the best tips I found on the web was the suggestion of eating a very low fiber diet and drinking a lot of water (flavored and sparkling water came in handy here) starting two days prior to the prep. I ate a low fiber fasting type diet two days before my prep. I didn’t do this prior to my colonoscopy three years ago and the prep didn’t clean me out well enough, hence the repeat colonoscopy three years later. The doctor couldn’t get a good enough look at my colon last time. Colon cancer is in my family so I had to insure I had a thorough clean out this time around.
My results showed no polyps and pictures doctor took of my colon looked so clean, I was amazed. This was the first time my colon ever looked that clean. Bottom Line - I don’t know if the Suprep is just better at cleaning out the colon than the PEG preps, and/or a combination of the low fiber fasting diet plus the Suprep, but the results speak for themselves.
I hope this helps you!
Worked myself up last night after reading these posts. Usually if there is a chance of nausea, I will have it. So far it was way worse in my mind than in reality.
I stayed on a low fiber diet for most of the week and with the exception of a small sandwich had banana and peanut butter protein shakes yesterday. Made it through the prep by chilling it, drinking through a large straw and holding my nose. Took me about 4 gulp sessions in 2 minutes. Followed each gulp session with a swig of white grape juice before letting go of my nose. Immediately brushed my teeth and started with my water chaser. I drink a lot of water normally so I just sipped on 40 ounces of room temp water over the hour. Didn't have any nausea from prep or chills. Was extremely bloated. Was a bit nauseous from all the sweet sugar drinks I was drinking before. First bm hit about an hour after finishing prep but really didn't get down to business until about a half hour later.
Tastes pretty good to me. I mixed it with cold water and used a straw and did not sip it I swallow it quick! It tasted like thick sweet berry cough medicine. I then cleansed my pallet with a lemon wedge and rinsed my mouth out. Then I had two more cups of cold water as directed! Drank them both within 15 minutes and within 38 minutes the cleansing began!
Currently using this as we speak.. I began at 7pm last night for a 2pm colonoscopy. This stuff is awful.. don't listen to the people who claim it tastes like sweet tarts. It's absolutely vile. I drank mine cold, mixed with cold water and through a straw and somehow got the first bottle down within 10 minutes. I chased it with sprite which helped me with the horrible after taste a bit. Soon after I was guzzling my next two bottles of water which was rough. I felt bloated and freezing.. literally shaking with chills. No real nausea or stomach cramps so that is a plus. It took all of 20 minutes to begin working... I was basically in the bathroom from 7:20 til 9 going constantly. It slowly started to taper off and left the toilet about 10 pm. From then on I was in and out of the bathroom every 10-20 minutes. By about 11pm-1am I was able to doze off for a few minutes here and there til the urge hit again. I finally slept from 4am-530 un-interrupted. Woke up but still on and off the toilet.
Now it's about 7am and finished half the second bottle but couldn't finish it all because I would've ended up throwing it all up. Back on the toilet again for another 4 hours. This is just awful but gets the job done I guess.
I started as directed at 5 pm. By 5:18 pm, I was in the bathroom and it was working it's magic. Not too bad until the vomiting and nausea kicked in. Called the Dr and was given an anti nausea pill. Now I have to take half of the second dose at 9 pm and the remainder at 4:30 am. I have chills. There has to be a better way to do these preps.
Hi, my husband just had his colonscopy last week and used suprep. Actually, it's easier than and taste better than the gallon of stuff we use to use and doesn't take as long. He mixed one with "white grape juice" and one with "ginger ale" he preferred the juice. Also I asked the pharmacist and he said it would be ok to mix and refrigerate so would be nice and cold to drink prior. Hope this helps. Good Luck!
I did the Suprep kit & it worked well, very salty so I had to drink tea or more water after each sip to get rid of the taste, it was much easier to tolerate than the Gatorade prep. The test went well.
Update, first encounter was 45 minutes and had a few more every 30 minutes or so. Took prep at 6PM and went to bed at 12:15. Took It again at 4:30 AM and this round felt more uncontrollable but i was clear by 7:30 and procedure was 9:00 so I had no problems.
I called SUPREP Bowel Prep Kit company today at 1 800 874-6756 and talked to a representative (Claire) and she said “yes, SUPREP is supposed to have an added berry flavorâ€...so it ends up I took a bad lot: Lot 2811014 Exp 07/13. I don’t know if anything else was wrong with the lot other than the lack of flavoring, but I discussed my violent vomit reaction to SUPREP Bowel Prep to the representative. The representative is in the process of sending me a UPS label so they can test whatever SUPREP is remaining in the bottles.
This is my third colonoscopy and first time using the Suprep, I used the PEG last 2 times. While you drink less with the Suprep I had much worse side effects. Headache, nausea and vomiting. The last 2 preps took a while to kick in and I was nervous about.finishing this one on the day of the procedure (in case it didn't finishh before I got to the hospital) but I can say while the fiesta dose took longer than expected (with side effects too) the second dose worked quickly.
Either preparation really sucks, there is just no way around it.
ck the side effects of Suprep--if u have hyperuricemia it could cause a sudden elevation in uric acid levels. i refused to take it because my gastro doc never bothered to ck my chart before prescribing it---i looked into it online before i even filled the Rx
i have hyperuricemia which my gastro doc never bothered to ck w/the side effects of this i would never take it.
If you've ever had to do golytely, you will appreciate this stuff! The taste isn't great, but it barely makes you gag (unlike the golytely which literally made me heave with every sip). Mine was lemon flavored, which honestly wasn't that bad. I didn't notice that weird, "poison" taste compared to the other stuff. It started to work very quickly. Probably less than half an hour the first time and immediately after I drank it the second time. For me, the effects lasted more than 12 hours, although my colonoscopy is because I have had bad diarrhea for a month, so who is to say what caused the 12 hour effect of this.
drank it an hour ago..... feel bloated, distended. but no urge to go yet....
What a nice testimony. I will be using the prep in 2 weeks and your post was quite heartening. I too will have prayer support; God cares about all aspects of our lives!
Took my first dose of SUPREP 75 min ago. No cramping, no nausea. I chilled the stuff before hand and mixed it with water. Used a straw to by-pass the taste buds. 3 or 4 good pulls on the straw then a swish of lemon-lime Gatorade over the tongue to chase the taste. I did my 32 ounce follow up liquids with hot Gatorade and hot water. It's snowing here today & the prep stuff made me cold. All kinds of noises from my gut and just one trip to the toilet so far...
after reading this forum I was very nervous about taking the first dose...I had to pace around the house to boost myself up...it wasn't as salty as I thought it would be but I HATE artificial grape flavor so this was very difficult for me to drink...after a few minutes I sliced up a lemon and sucked on a slice every time I took a big gulp and it truly cut the taste. I'm not sure how I'll ever get the second dose down but at least I got the first one done in 10 minutes...now I guess I'll just sit or stand around and wait
