Hi, My daughter had a confirmed Strep A, her throat is fine now but she still has a non chesty cough and runny nose. Dr prescribed her Co-trimoxazole (Sulfamethoxazole + Trimethoprim) in case she develops pneumonia. I am so worried after reading the side effects. 5 or 6 years ago she had utrica after taking Flucloxacillin and since then she has not been prescribed any penicillin. She had 2 throat and chest infections in the past month and was prescribed Clarythromycin, therefore they are giving her something stronger. Her cough is nearly going away and I am in two minds about her taking Co-trimoxazole. Could you advise please?

Omg! My husband took these for 8 days and he's been so nauseous, tired, laying on the sofa all day, irritable, grouchy,muscles hurt...He stopped taking them yesterday (for a uti). Was supposed to take them for 30 days!

What medication do you use on an itchy rash developed from sulfamethoxazole/tmp ds? I developed it after only taking 2 pills and discontinued usage.

I will not ever take this medicine again i am taking it for a uti two pills a day 20 in all for 10days. I feel dizzy sick stomacj bloated gas and i pee way more before i took the pill. This pill is not working i am calling my dr. I had a uti before and took amoxicillin and it worked in two days. I

I was prescribed this medication for a UTI.. I took 2 pills.. I have an extreme headache, weak and sick to my stomach! I don't know if I should continue this or stop and talk to my doctor about getting on something different?!?! This is horrible feeling like this! What to do?

Hey. I know is a old post. But just want to say I relay to ur story. I feel the same way when I took sulfamethoxazole tmp I was fine went to the doc. Did a u.a. came back infection which I was suprised. Took the first pill in the night n 1hr later felt a sinus headache n very crampy. Couldn't sleep. Next morning took it again n I felt the strong headache n I felt like I was catching a flu I looked sick. Went to the doc I told her my symptoms. She said it couldn't be from the pill. She said to go to the hospital if I kept feeling like this. she saidni might had a infection in my brain. Idk. So I decided to stop taking the pill just to make sure is not the pill causing it. So I miss a dose. Next morning woke up feeling a bit better headache almost gone. I still feel a bit weird.. but much much better I soon as I stopped taking it.. so yea I believe this pills are bad..

Oh I forgot to mention, this drug also made me very nauseated, and felt like throwing up. I lost a lot of weight and couldn't eat. Before it happened I weighed 135lbs and at the end weighed 115lbs.

Don't Take this Drug! I was prescribed Sulfamethoxazole in 2004 for a bladder infection and had taken the full prescription. The reactions started with a terrible head ache that burned at the top of my head and radiated down the back of my neck. And then I had gotten a rash in big blotches all over my body that were hot to the touch.
Later after I stopped taking it I had gotten arthritis in hands and feet. My body ached all over. Could hardly move my body. Then I developed bell palsy on my face. first on the right side then went away then it went to the left. It was horrible. I had gotten so sick I thought I was going to die in my sleep. I had weak muscles and heart. Before I decided to go to another Dr. I was getting cramps in my muscles in my elbows and twitching in my face and different parts of my body. I went to another Dr. and they said they thought I had Lymes Disease from the symptoms. But it was not Lymes it was the Drug reaction. It took my two years to get this out of my body by detoxing, taking good whole food vitamins, and bathing in the Miracle 2 Soap and using the neutralizer gel. It caused hormonal imbalances and anxiety. So if you get prescribed this medication DO NOT Take it. Ask your Dr. to give you something else. Im taking Sulfamethoxazole now for over 4 days and its still stinging like it did when I walked in the clinic. Its not going away. My bladder infection. Having to pee all the time. Not understanding why, I've had this before and it always went away after 2 days. The stinging its really bad.

The first day I was unconfortable with a bladder infection and I only had Excedrin Migraine for pain and it really took away the discomfort.I was taking sulfamethoxazoletmp ds but stopped taking it after 4 days because of nausea.

This is the second time I take this medication for a UTI, the first time around my legs became so swollen and I had migraines and really bad body pain. I suspected the medication or my tough workouts that week. Here I am a month later with another UTI and again I'm taking the same medication and this time I end up with a fever of 103.2 F, swollen legs, and neck and body pain so intense that it's difficult to sleep or walk. It's only been three days but I'm gonna stop and call the Dr. Horrible side effects!

I was given Sulfamethoxazole-tmp (2x a day) for a UTI. I was also prescribed phenazopyridine (3x a day) for pain relief. I took my first dose of each the night I got the medicine and woke up the next day feeling super nauseated with an intense headache. I was unable to go to work. That passed after about 3 hours. It was then time to take the next dose of the phenazopyridine, and I notice when I took it, I again felt sick and had a severe headache. Since that medicine was making me feel worse I stopped taking it (it was only for pain relief). I took my second antibiotic of the day and only felt a little nauseated that night. I woke up with a headache and felt sick. I took some regular headache medicine, and it got better. I haven't had an appetite all day but forced myself to eat. I read somewhere that milk can help antibiotics not make you sick so I have been drinking milk and water when I take my antibiotic. After taking my second dose for the day tonight, I am feeling okay. However, I have been having hot and cold flashes, and now I have neck pain (which could be from sleeping weirdly). I've also been somewhat constipated. I will admit I have not drank enough water and increased my water intake today. I've been taking it for 2.5 days. After reading these posts this stuff seems scary. I don't know if my body is still flushing out the phenazopyridine that gave me such bad side effects or if it's also the antibiotic (or both). If I feel bad tomorrow I'm calling the doctor. No need to suffer! Also my skin is really dry on my face (that could be from some sun I got over the weekend though). Good luck to all! Call your doctor if something doesn't feel right, and I'll take my own advice!

I got an injury like 3 months ago and just recently I got sick thinking it was just a flu I didn't notice my leg swelling up now I am in tremendous pain and have a hard time dealing with it it's on my right shin and let me tell u it feels like I have a broken leg however the reason most of you are feeling side effects it's not because of the pill only don't forget ur body is fighting a serious bacteria so feeling nausea and headaches could be from the bacteria but most likely because u guys are dehydrated drink more water that will cure migraines more then pills this pain is so bad I can't even walk I have missed work for over a week cause of this and I hope the pain will go down I have been taking ibuprofen 800 Mgs and its helped a little I hate this feeling so so bad however I hav not seen any side effects from the antibiotics

I'm done taking this for five days, two pills a day. I had no side effects at all. I'm female, 33 years. So glad about that, after reading a few posts on this web side.

prescribed sulfamethoxazole-tmp last night for UTI (which I've only had 1 other time in my life). I took my first dose last night and went to bed, woke up this morning feeling alot better (no burning sensation or urge to go) and so I took my second dose. Within 30 minutes of taking it, I am feeling a migraine coming on (i get these alot) and that is what brought me to this website to see if they pill caused it. I'm pretty lamed out about it... i still have 2 more days of taking this pill. It seems to be working for the UTI, i'm just not looking forward to more migraines!!

It is the sulfamethoxazole-tmp! I'm 50 and have been prescribed this various times and each time I get a migraine headache within 20 minutes of taking it. Most doctors just don't care enough to ask if you have had side effects in the past and many don't tell you what they are prescribing - - it is up to us to keep a ledger of what drugs work and don't work and/or have side effects. Remember that doctors are like plumbers.....some are good and some are NOT!

I was given a 10 day dose of the sulfamethoxazole - TMP for an infection and on the 4th day I can't stop peeing. No other side affects accept that I am urinating constantly.

I got prescribed this pill about 6 days ago n I have thrown up twice felt sick every time I smoke a cigg I got prescribed bcz I had a access boil on my chin n they told me take did 2x a day but it makes me feel so sick idk it reminds me of being prego sorta scary lol

Taking this now. Have a really bad infection but this targets specifically the type of inflammation I have. I lost appetite almost completely, but is is a small price to pay vs the other med I had that had me nauseous all the time and was not working.
Interesting side effect is that food with any smell or if not bland turns me off to such a degree that I gag. Bland is perfect though.
Very grateful for this med, I am getting better
