When it comes to any medication I think it is best to not take any chances with the past expiration date (especially in the event that it is almost 5 years old). They MAY still be ok to take if they haven't been exposed to a high amount of heat or various other conditions outside of the bottle, however I am not a pharmacist or MD, so I cannot guarantee if it is in fact safe for you to consume. There is still a high likelihood that it lost a lot of its potency and may be ineffective to the point where it could harm your body by not doing it's job all the way, per say. This is is most important when it comes to expired antibiotics, because the antibiotic may not kill the infection 100% and therefore can create antibiotic-resistant-bacteria that is much, much harder to kill.

I think it would be best in your case to just request a new prescription given the length of time it has been out of date. However, if you'd really like to be certain about the pills degradation, you would have to take them to a lab and have them tested for quality. I don't know how to go about that procedure, but I am sure it will be cheaper and less stressful to just request a refill.
