Side effects of Sulfamethoxazole + Trimethoprim can include the following based on my personal research:

Painful or swollen tongue;
dizziness, spinning sensation; ringing in your ears; joint pain; or sleep problems (insomnia).

More serious side effects that can occur may include:

Fever, sore throat, and headache with a severe blistering, peeling, and red skin rash; the first sign of any skin rash, no matter how mild; pale skin, easy bruising or bleeding; cough, feeling short of breath; DIARRHEA THAT IS WATERY OR BLOODY; feeling restless or irritable, confusion, hallucinations, seizure;
slow heart rate, weak pulse, severe tingling, numbness, muscle pain or weakness; nausea, stomach pain, loss of appetite, itching, DARK URINE, CLAY-COLORED STOOLS, jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes); fever, chills, body aches, flu symptoms; OR URINATING LESS THAN USUAL OR NOT AT ALL.

I was prescribed this sulfameth/tmp ds tab for urinary track infection and after only two days of use got a severe blistering on and around the end of my penis.What is recomended to use to help heal this condition?

Continuing to take Sulfamethoxazole + Trimethoprim will only prolong these undesirable side effects. Severe blistering in that region is certainly reason enough to contact your doctor who prescribed you the medication. He or she should have you switched to a different drug or taken off all together and given a natural alternative. In the meantime, It may be a good idea to keep the area moist so that dry blistering does not occur as severely.

I took 1 pill this morning and I am short of breath, itchy, tingely, my ears are bright red. I don't like the feeling, i also have no appetite, head ache and cough. I am not going to take this agin, do I need to go to the doctor or will this wear off.

i was given the sulfameth/tmp ds earlier today i took one only and my sides,ribs hurt like hell and im so irritable and my head and ribs are pulsing ... i was given this medicine to help my uti and now im just in pain .. what do i do??

I was giving sulfameth tab, i took onetab and had flu symptons, fever chills,and could not sleep all night, today is the second day and I have not taken any pills but still very sick.

It sounds like the side effects of this drug are worse than the symptoms you were trying to fight. Anyone who is experiencing this degree of side effects should contact their doctor as soon as possible to let them know what your experiencing.

Following up with a Naturopath is probably going to be a safer alternative than returning to your doctor for more prescription medication, as you pay the price in side effects rather than for it to just work how it should. Most natural remedies have very little, if any side effects when used properly. Also it is very important to eat the right foods (fruits, veggies, herbs, etc) to help it go away faster. Natural methods may take a while longer to get rid of the UTI than conventional medicine, but it works, it's more cost effective, and much safer. There are plenty of natural remedies online if you search around and don't have money to keep paying for overpriced medicine.

I have had a UTI once or twice a month for the past 6 months, I have been with the same guy, i urinate after sex, and we use a condom, is there any reason why this keeps happening? I also am having headaches, feel extremely itchy, can't sleep, feeling short of breathe, and restless from the sulfameth/trimeth ds, does that mean i should stop taking it? It also doesn't really feel like its working and im almost done this bottle it was for 10 days. Should i switch medications?

Hi Brittney,

That is actually something that you will need to discuss with your doctor. No one over the internet can possibly know your medical history or how this drug affects you, as well as the benefits or disadvantages that it provides you. Even though it is rare, some women can get a urinary tract infection every time they have sex. Other factors that also may increase a woman's risk of developing UTI include pregnancy, having urinary tract infections or bladder infections as a child, menopause, or diabetes. These may or may not be the case for you, so that is also reason to possibly go consult your doctor.

My personal opinion is that you should ask your doctor about switching medications since this one has so many undesirable side effects. I would continue using it as prescribed by your doctor unless you cannot bear the side effects, but either way, let him know what your experiencing and he should have other options available. In the meantime be sure to drink a lot of fresh organic cranberry juice and water also to stay hydrated!

So from what I've been reading (and having symptoms ) is that the medication "Sulfameth/TMP DS" is mostly for UTIs Yet my doctor gave it to me for a staff infection. Oddly enough they had given my boyfriend the same meds for a staff infection. My boyfriend had a headache the first day and after that seemed fine becides he was tired. I got put on it a few days after and so far my symptoms are spinning sensation ringing in ears sleep problems fever headache feeling short of breath nausea stomach pain dark urine chills and flu symptoms. How ever some of the other side affects have been different for me. Like less eating, I'm eating 3 times as much as normal, less peeing, again 3 times as normal. So i wondered if I was pregnant at one point. But I'm waiting to see. I guess my question is is this normal? I mean I can't sleep at night but I can sleep during the day? Is that caused by the pills as well? I was to take 1 tablet by mouth twice a day for 7 days and now its making me want to quit completely. I already know my doctor will say its all in my head but I had the symptoms before I even looked it up. and I looked it up because of them.

It is normal for this medication to be prescribed for staff infections, since this drug is stated to be used to fight a variety of bacterial infections.

That is definitely the medication causing dizziness, spinning sensations; ringing in your ears; joint pain; or sleep problems (insomnia). These are common side effects associated with this drug, despite how bad they are.

However, it sounds like you are also experiencing the less common serious side effects too like having dark urine, etc. In cases of serious effects, it is advised that you contact your doctor immediately. On a side note, I'm not sure why this drug is still on the market with all the bad reports coming back on it. Hopefully you can change meds when you follow up with your doctor.

I was prescribed this drug for staff infection. I was to take it four times a day for ten days. As soon as I started taking it I felt dizzy and shaky, I feel nauseous all the time, and I can not go to sleep at night. In addition to this drug I was prescribed dicloxacillan that I was to take four times a day for ten days. I'm wondering if the doctor I went to might have put me on too much medicine at one time or if the side effects I'm having are just coming from the sulfameth/tmp.

i have taken this med recently , and the fist thing happend was i got a fever of 102.7, then and still days later Both of my legs hurt so bad i actually went to the er by ambulance.., i have a headache , leg pain , back ache and diareaha now and its 3 days later ???? wth

I was in a car accident on Sunday July 31st. After the accident I noticed blood in my urine. I went back to the er and they said I had a uti. Early the next morning they called me back and said that I have a cut on my liver and a bruised kidney and that I had to go back in for observation. I am on a ton of medicine and one of them is this drug. After taking it once the blood in my urine cleared up which I am very happy about but is there any way that I can stop taking the medicine a little early? I don't like taking so many pills at one time.. and if so how early? If i take it for 5 days in a row shouldn't that be sufficient?

I've been taking sulfameth and trimeth for a week with six more pills to go. I have severe isomnia and feel the need to urinate six to seven times at night. During the day I only need to urinate once every three to four hours. Plus my lower ribs are achy. What effect do these two medication have on kidneys?

my 9th grade sex ed class focused on all the sexual diseases that can occur, and ones that especially focus on urinary diseases can be transferred while having sex, so you need to take your partner in to the doctors office and both be put on the medication, refraining from sex while on the drug to clear it out of both your systems, or it will keep repeating. For some reason men tend to show less symptoms, so are commonly overlooked as a carrier.

I was prescribed this medication to treat a UTI infection. However since i started t take the prescribed dosage i have had a loss of appetite, extreme headaches, nausea (probably from how bad my headache is), and very bad dizziness, i also feel like it is making my UTI infection worse, because every day my urine is darker. I hope this does not cause kidney problems

It has been shown that in some trials of sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim that they can cause kidney stones because they metabolize there. To avoid it you just have to make sure you're drinking lots of water, which it may specify on your prescription bottle. It's just because the medication can help form calcium-oxalate kidney stones.

How long does it take for the side affects of sulfameth to ware off? I have sever blistering in the penus area mouth and feet. Began almost immediately. I continued the to take the medication for about a week. I stopped about two week ago but the peeling continues.

I got these sulfameth trimeth ds tablets for my staff infection...I can't sleep...I'm dehydrated...I feel dizzy all the time...I can't eat...and I just feel like crying for no reason...I just want to feel like me again without these crazy side affects.
