Substitute For Clonazepam

What is another less expensive generic drug to replace Clonazepam? The Clonazepam is going up in price considerably and I need to make a change.

It sort of depends. There are similar commonly prescribed benzodiazepines but not many as "potent" as klonopin that have as long of a half life. Xanax is the closest in potency conversion but has a much shorter half life. Valium has a long half life but 10mg would be the conversion to 1mg of clonazepam. Lorazepam, while a little less potent, also has a lengthy half life but is about half as potent as clonazepam or alprazolam.

If you switch to a different, cheaper, generic you may have to adjust your dose accordingly. I'm not sure which is cheaper. I know generic alprazolam is pretty cheap but due to its much shorter half life you'd have to take it more frequently or get an extended release formulation. It's the closest to clonazepam in terms of potency per milligram on the benzodiazepine conversion chart (for commonly prescribed benzos).

There's also Librium, too. The first benzo ever created. It has a very long half life but is much much weaker in potency per mg than most other benzos. So after saying all that, you'll just have to figure out which one is right for you and call around to get pricing information so you can decide.

Clonazepam is a generic for Klonopin, it is a benzodiazepine that is used to treat anxiety, and panic disorders. The FDA warns that it carries the risk of being habit forming, and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, headache, and irritability.

Unfortunately, many medications have been going up in price, recently, and some of the prices are becoming outrageous. It is happening with many medications, not just Benzodiazepines.

Have you tried checking with your pharmacy to see which one is the cheapest they can provide? Have you tried any discount programs?

Clonazepam is used to control many other things than anxiety, depression, panic attacks, etc. I have a seizure disorder that causes certain muscle groups to feel as if they are at war. Was very painful and approaching crippling. It was the first medication they gave me. They added another, which I dropped. Then gabapentin which was my miracle drug ever since. Along with the anti seizure drug, clonazepam.
