Suboxone To Pain Management
UpdatedI was put on pain management years ago. I've had many of surgeries and have pelvic neuralgia , bulging discs at L5 and S1, spinal stenosis, degenerative disc disease and bi-lateral neuralgia. I became addictive 2 the pain meds. And went on methadone. I was on (110) mg. a day. Once I got down 2 (24)mg. I was in such bad w/d I went 2 my Dr. In tears. He gave me 2 choices, stay on the methadone and increase the amount or go on suboxone. I went on the subs that day. I had come down 2 far with the methadone 2 start over, again. My question is: would any Dr. Ever put me on pain management, again? I suffer so severely with pain, I can't take much more. Even if I have 2 let my husband hold them 4 me ang give them 2 me as prescribed. Please, any suggestions may b helpful.

I work in an addictions treatment center. Recently, a new Suboxone Treatment Program opened, and social workers from this program came to us to discuss Suboxone, etc. They flat-out said that Suboxone is a lousy drug for pain mgmt and that people in pain who are on methadone should not consider switching to Suboxone. Methadone apparently has much greater pain-relieving properties.
Dear Sub, thank u 4 the information. I wish I knew then what I do now. I was on methadone for almost 5 years and then switched 2 suboxone. I am a nurse and I should have known these things. But, back in 2001, didn't know much about methadone and suboxone.
Hi cats,
I was on subs a year or so ago for just 3 months. Started tapering after first month. Went from 12mg/day to .25mg/day and jumped. The jump wasn,t bad at all. I fiquired my pain pill problem was behind me. Problem is I need a knee replacement and couldn,t get it done right then. (time, work, lack of funds, lousy insurance) Pain was starting to bother me. Jobs very physical. Went to the orthopedic dr. and of course he suggests surgery. I tell him my insurance (thru Cobra) was gonna expire at end of year and thats when Obamacare started and I could get some insurance with pre existing condition. This dr. says he can,t prescribe pain meds for that long so he sends me to a pain dr.
This dr. starts me on pain meds, no problem. I didn,t say anything about past sub use but he must have saw that I,d been on them when he looked at my medical records on computer. So it is possible to go from subs to pain management with the right doctors referals. Be careful, I thought nothing would go wrong (pill counts, UA's, etc..) Ya right, I,m back on subs again and still havn,t had the surgery. My sub dr. knows about my pain issue and he has me take smaller dose 3 times a day. He says subs only work for pain for around 10hrs but it will work for addiction problems for up to 36hrs. Hope this helps.
I've been a chronic pain patient for over 10 years now. Without too many details, I have spinal cord stenosis, hx of 2 fusions in my neck, herniations at C3-4-5-6-7, T10-11-12, L4-5 and S1. Without pain management I am in constant agony and forced into a wheelchair. With pain management, I can atleast walk and function with a reduced level of pain - for now. After 10 years of constant oxycodone, trying fentanyl, etc. I voluntarily sought a trial of suboxone. It is used "off-label" for the treatment of chronic pain. It causes less respiratory suppression, little to none stomach/GI dysmotility, and overall less problems than typical narcotics. It is MORE difficult to come off of, but for those of us who will never get better from their source(s) of pain, it's probably one of the best choices for long term pain management. Methadone is actually better, but I can't take it due to cardiac issues. The best thing you can do is educate yourself about methadone and suboxone. I believe you'll find out that methadone is the better choice for you if you don't have any other disease/disorder that contradicts the use of it. Reason being, it's very effective for pain and there is no need to go into withdrawal 2 days prior to any surgery, or have to wait to use other narcotics for more acute types of pain. I hope this helps :-)
If you abused your medicine then the answer would be no if you chose to switch the nation allow you to take something for pain the worst thing you could've ever done was go on methadone that is the worst medication more bad than painkillers but Suboxone does help a lot I have the same problems been in the same places as you except never know methadone and I do OK on Suboxone I do have pain sometimes that I wish I could get something for it I don't know doctors look at people like that their drug attic's when I'm not a drug attic i'm someone that had a medical problem and got stuck on pain medicine but I never really wanted to be on it I hope any of this helps you
