Suboxone And D.o.t. Physical
UpdatedCan you pass a D.O.T. (Dept. of Transportation) physical if you are taking Suboxone? Someone said that there is suppose to be a chemical in this that would make you negative for a drug screen. Hope someone out there can help me? Thank you!

I use to do physicals, spot drug screens etc. for the D.O.T., in Wisconsin, but I can tell you that in any state, if you have a ligitamate prescription for the medication, (I take Dexadrine for ADHD) the screen is reported as a negative screen. What they are looking for are illegal drugs, or legal controlled substances being taken by people who do not have a valid scrip from a licensed physician. What happens is that if something shows up in your drug screen, you will be called and asked to give the name of the drug or drugs you are taking. You will also have to give the name of the prescribing physician and where the script was filled. You may also be asked to fax that information to the lab where your test was done. I work in a profession that requires pre-employment drug screening, and am always positive, but because I am taking the drug legally, my test is always reported, to my prospective employer, as a negative test. Unfortunately, if you are screening for a pilot's license, to fly, you are not allowed to take any controlled subsances,,and pilot a plane. This, however, is done through the FAA, not the DOT. A lot of people have legal, ligtimate and acceptable reasons to need to take controlled medications. It is the the person who is taking the medication who carries the responsability not to operate a vehicle if he or she feels, " under the influence, or high". It is the same as drinking and driving, you must be responsible, and will be accountable for your actions, if you are not. Legal script for controlled substance, no problem!
I just tried to get my DOT card in Michigan this week and was honest on my questioner about my meds. I listed Suboxone and I was denied a DOT card because it is listed as a narcotic and it has the potential to effect my reaction time driving. If I wouldn't have mentioned it I would have been ok because it wouldn't have showed up on a drug screen but going through treatment I feel like if I wasn't honest that I wasn't taking recovery serious.
