Starting Suboxon After Six Months In Recovery
UpdatedHave had major chronic pain for several years now, was on oxy for about 3 years, then Dilaudid and Methadone when the Oxy no longer helped. Got so addicted had to go to treatment to get off the stuff. Have been in recovery since Feb 2009, but dr wants me to start taking the 2 mg tabs twice a day starting tomorrow for the pain. Have been reading through the info and comments and am kind of freaked out. Is this truly a good chronic pain medication? I am not going thru any type of wd at this point, the one in treatment was almost more than I could bear and I don't know that I could make it through that again.

Suboxone contains the active ingredients Buprenorphine and Naloxone, an opiate and an opiate agonist.
I do understand where you are coming from, I quit very high doses of narcotic pain medications cold turkey and have refused to take anything stronger than Ibuprofen since.
That said, many people have had great luck with Suboxone, because since it is used to treat addiction, a slow taper of the medication has enabled many people to get off opiates permanently, so should you ever want/need to stop taking it, you will just have to follow your doctor's instructions carefully.
It carries side effects similar to all other opiates, including: nausea, drowsiness, dry mouth and constipation.

Did you have any other questions?
I have a couple treatments with suboxone ... both lasting over a 2 yrs..... With long term use, and a brain wired for opioid use, the withdrawal can be very long... Up to a month or more with post acute symptoms like chills and insomnia... Although less intense than withdrawal from long acting opioids like Oxycontin or Methadone, it can and may last just as long ... Be prepared and talk to your Dr. Question your Doctors motives if you are on Suboxone for a LONG period of time.
PS- This withdrawal was, on each occasion, after tapering down to .5 mg for a week or more. .5 mg is also usually lower than a comfortable dose for most people on this medication for a long period of time.. I dont want to alarm anyone, and believe there is a place for Suboxone. I just warn that it is not a magic pill. There is ALWAYS some withdrawal if you want to quit any opioid.
