Sleep Medications Stronger Than Melatonin
(Newest replies first)

Updated

Does anybody know any prescription strength sleep aids that are stronger than Melatonin? I have been using at least 10 mg Melatonin a night at bedtime for a few years but it isn’t working like it used to. Keep in mind this is when needed and I would talk to my doctor about this once I have a list related towards this.

They don't make anything good anymore. Tuinal, Seconal (made still but hard to get and very expensive), Nembutal, Placidyl (an Elvis favorite), Noludar, Quaalude, and my favorite Doriden (Glutethimide). These meds worked always, but of course our government knows what is best for us.

Every med has side effects, you are pointing out the most obvious things.

Lunesta is more effective than Ambien in my opinion, and doesn’t leave you with that hang over feeling, and it keeps you asleep throughout the night. Ambien makes you pass out and then wake up 3hrs later because you slept so hard lol.

Elavil (Amitriptyline) is used off label for sleep as is Desyrel (Trazodone) which are both antianti-depressants. Doctors don't like writing scripts for controlled substances. All of the good sleeping pills are not made any longer, thanks to the benzos. Tuinal, Seconal, Nembutal, Amytal which were barbiturates. The therapeutic dose was very close to the lethal dose. But they were good sleeping pills. Tolerance built up quickly though . Then you had the non-barbiturate sleeping pills like Noludar, Methaqualone, Placidyl, and my personal favorite Doriden (Glutethimide). Which had some special qualities to it, especially if mixed with codeine. But good ol' Uncle Sam knows what is best for us and practically forced the pharmaceutical companies to halt production of these meds, which all worked well by the way. SMH

I use Melanton, and it works great for me. There's many prescription sleep meds, but most docs have gotten leery of prescribing them due to they cause dependence. Ambien, Ambien CR, Lunista, and there's a wide range of antidepressants docs usually favor to prescribe for sleep: Trazadone, Seroquil, Mellaril

I haven’t yet. I understand the side effects and know there are possible side effects, but the side effects are ok if it allows me to sleep 7 hours (or longer) nonstop. If it’s hormone based like Melatonin I’ll take it 5 days on and 2 days off.

The rough nights are more of a pain than morning grogginess for me anyways.

Please keep in mind that the prescription options mentioned do carry the risk of causing side effects, for example along with the desired drowsiness, they can cause dizziness, headache, and some like the Ambien are known to cause sleep actions, and next day hangover-like effects.

The issue with Melatonin is that it's real use is to help reset your natural sleep cycle, by supplementing your natural melatonin production, it doesn't actually induce sleep, and your body doesn't absorb much over about 2 to 3mgs, so the higher doses are really just a waste.

Have you consulted your doctor, yet?

Halcion works great! Knocks you right out. I take it only when I need to. You need a prescription for it.

Melatonin is an OTC natural brain chemical, it supposed to have a calming effect. It's about as strong as Benadryl, if you know what I mean. There are many different sleep medications available, and some of the anti anxiety medications will help get you to sleep too. Valium, Ativan, Klonopin, and Xanax. Also Dalmane, Restoril, Doral, and Pro-Som are ok I guess. Nothing good is made anymore, Placidyl, Doriden, Nembutal, Tuinal, etc... Doriden was quite effective and had some special qualities to it also. Good Luck

I am 89 and have used Ambien, 5 mg. dose for years, with no bad side effects. It gently brings on a sleepy feeling and usually lasts thru the night. A slight hazy feeling in the a.m. lasts for about an hour but that's all. Recommend that dosage.
