Personally, mine began with red, glassy eyes. They felt HOT. Then my muscles began to hurt. The muscle pain was in groUps-thighs, then arms, calves etc. My entire body felt as if it were breaking in two. Then back pain began. Fever of almost 104 (taking meds did reduce it but it did not go away). Body felt rigid. Stiff, as if I couldn't move it. While this began, my chest was feeling tight, throat began to hurt and mouth and tongue began to swell. In no time my face was swollen. Now I would advise anyone to go straight to the ER once breathing is Impaired or labored. I however, have a cousin and his wife who are both RN's and a friend who is. I text them. I was NOT able to breathe if I spoke. Took 2 Benadryls. After 30 -45 minutes took 2 more. Then I began to feel nauseated And have diarrhea. I only vomited once but still... I just couldn't get comfortable. Felt like the flu except worse. Later on, my mouth became raw and is now full of canker sores inside it, on my tongue and going down my throat. Also there is a sickening headache that can be a side effect Of course I got that too! that one pill zapped all of the life out of me. I could barely walk for almost 2 days Due to weakness and dizziness. I took that ONE dose on a Tuesday afternoon. It is now Saturday afternoon and I still ache in my legs and arms, still have cankers on my tongue and throat. The inside of my mouth is still raw but now I can live with this. Oh and you may be sensitive to the sun. I sure am now. My skin is still flushed and eyes still glassy. I did find that coconut oil (organic and not processed) swished in my mouth has helped to heal the inside of my mouth. I just dig a spoonful out, and let it melt and swallow it (due to the throat probs) I hope this will help you or someone else. Oh and if anyone feels this coming on my cousins said take the benadryl asap and take a prilosec or Zantac with it as well.

I have been on Bactrim 2x1000 mg daily for the last three weeks and I think I am beginning to really feel side effects. I have MRSA and it is helping clear it up but I woke up in the middle of the night, sweating, chest pain, dizzy, neck pain, headache - and found this site where so many other people have had bad reactions. I will call my Dr in the morning to see if I can stop the drug or change it. I am allergic to most other antibiotics. I don't think this is an allergic reaction - no hives - but the side effects stink.

Couple weeks ago I started this med for a uti and got huge painful itchy red spots. Thought it was valley fever. Spots went away and took the meds. Today I started again for another uti and within 5 min I was itchy and the spots came back in the exact same places. It's more like again rash. Hurts oh so bad!

My mother is 83, took Bactrim for 6 days and started itching all over from the inside. She has polymyalgia and started hallucinating. Spent 11 nights in the hospital. Docs said her blood sodium level dropped and this caused the hallucinations. She has spent 3 weeks in physical therapy because she was so weakened. She still has burning / stinging sensations in her lower body. Doc thinks it is nerve damage. Pharm did not give her drug fact sheet to read (apparently trying to save paper). Talk to doctor about meds before using. This could save a lot of misery.

So finally I'm writing an update. In an effort to stop the sun rash from happening I went to an ER doctor, a CNP (who is naturally minded), a dermatologist who then had me come in to a meeting of top University dermatologists to see if any of them could figure out what was going on (I'd guess 15-20 at minimum, none of them had any ideas other than a "slight chance that it could be Lupus" and "something in the Bactrim must have reacted to something I was using on my skin") and finally a Dr. of oriental medicine. The only one that was helpful was the Oriental medicine doctor. She did a live blood analysis. It reveled an autoimmune response and some digestive issues that cause inflammation in my gut. I took a autoimmune supplement called digestacure autoimmune-x, and changed several things in my diet. (BTW autoimmune disease is common in my family not to mention at epidemic proportions in America) During this time I discovered that there are several autoimmune diseases that are drug induced.

I did the strict diet and supplement and kept completely out of the sun (covered my body head to toe even when I walked from the car into the grocery store) for one month. When I returned we did another live blood and it was MUCH better! Truthfully it was amazing & I was not expecting it to be so drastically different. After that I did brief evaluations out in the sun (5 min at first then working up to larger increments with several days in between to see if there was any change in my skin) with Badger sunblock (due to it's limited list of ingredients). I am SO SO SO HAPPY TO REPORT that my skin is no longer reacting to the sun! I have even been out in the sun long enough to get a slight burn and there was still no reaction! I also found out through the dermatologist that Neosporin has sulfa in it so you should not use that any more. Personally I will now use a colloidal silver first aid topical treatment or essential oils (please educate yourself before using ANYTHING on or in your body!) As many of you already on here I will NEVER let any doctor give myself or my loved one a sulfa drug. I believe they do more harm than good in the majority of people who take them. If you'd like more details I'd be happy to share. But I would hands down recommend anyone going through this to see a Dr. of oriental medicine and do the live blood analysis.

I was prescribed Bactrim on Wednesday. Took 1 pill and almost immediately my eyes were so bloodshot I could hardly see, had a sore throat like nothing I have ever had, fever of 101.6 and severe pain in my elbows and knees. Immediately stopped taking it. Went to my doctor and he tried to tell me it wasn't a reaction to the Bactrim, tested me for strep, asked if I could have Lyme disease (NO!) and said if it was a reaction it was very odd (then why are so many people posting horror stories
Online!?!?!?! It is 48 hours later and I am still having severe pain in my elbows and knees. I really hope
This passes soon. I spent today in bed because the pain is so bad when I stand. I'm 45...I really hope this goes away soon. I wouldn't wish this on anyone.

I agree so taking it. The longer it is in your system the wise things will get. It's been over a year for me and I still haven't gotten back to normal.

Have you been taking Benadryl? That will help those symptoms go away faster. That's what a RN had me do. Thankfully it was enough. But I had the same reaction as you and it was awful!

For me benadryl wasn't enough, I had to get a steroid shot and take oral steroids for a week. I should have said that before. I ended up in the er, my arms were feverish, red and swollen.

It's worth a try. If it doesn't work you will have to pay a visit to your dr or urgent care. The side effects are horrible and painful as well. Someone just commented that they needed a dr visit to get a steroid shot etc. I wish you the best, as I have been there!

Thank you again everyone. I actually have some prednisone for my arthritis and I started taking some yesterday. Figure it can't hurt. I will definitely see my doctor if it's not gone tomorrow. I've never had anything so painful.

Thank you again!

Please tell me you are ok now? I reacted pretty badly to Bactrim and it's been a month and my muscles still hurt, I'm still sensitive to the sun and itchy, feel so unwell. When does it go away? Did you find out it was autoimmune reaction?

It's been over a year and my arms are still red and sun sensitive, as is my cheek. They swell up still when I got hot. Not sure if it will ever normal again. Some people don't continue tip have issues.

It's been a few weeks for me and I still have the joint pain every couple days but nothing close to how bad it was when it first happened. I hope I never experience that again. I hope you start to improve more asap.

Thank you for replying. I have had so many horrible symptoms for the past 5 weeks. I am not sure what to do at this point. I am trying natural antihystamine, turmeric, vitamins, probiotics. I am not sure if anyone had luck with steroids? How did you treat the symptoms? I am not sure if it's allergic reaction still lingering or is it a toxic reaction. I am so sad and depressed. I just want to get better. I feel the burning in all my muscles and joints, my fingertips, my neck, I feel like i will have permanent tendonitis from this. Please help me with providing some success story of treating this :(

I was taking bactrim for 9 days. I went to urgent care on the 9th day cause I felt like I was getting the flu they couldnt find anything wrong. The next day I woke up with a rash all over my body. They said it was a viral infection I believe not. I am now back on steroids for a week to see if it takes care of it. I wish they could somehow flush this drug out of my body.

So I find out that one of my friends has been in the burn unit because of Bactrim. She had been on it for two weeks and was having problems with but the doctors kept telling her that it wasn't Bactrim. But finally one Dr at an er caught it. She has had heart issues and other issues because of it. If it had been allowed to go on longer she may be here. Scary stuff.
