Side Effects Of Taking Amoxicillin Prior To Dental Work
UpdatedSince a total knee replacement in January 2008, my surgeon has prescribed Amoxicillin prior to my 6 month dental exams and cleaning. Within 8 hours from taking the Amoxicillin, I become ill every time. The illness is never exactly the same. A year ago, I was stick for a week with flu-like symptoms. My last appointment on June 1, 2011 has caused a lot of discomfort. Within 8 hours of the dental appointment, I began having a severe headache, bloodshot eyes that ached when I moved them. All that night I could not sleep more than a few minutes at a time. My temperature was slightly elevated but I felt as though it would register at least 104. All that day I slept whenever I could and ate nothing--just drank water. I was not hungry and I was not vomiting. The 3rd day I tried to live my normal life but it was difficult. So weak and tired,I could hardly move. Now on June 4, my body aches all over, but there's no fever. For the last 3 years since the knee replacement, I am sick every time after I visit the dentist.
Before this, I never was sick after seeing the dentist. My age is 75.
I discussed this with my internist, and she suggested trying a different antibiotic. Do you have any idea why I react this way to the Amoxicillin?

Not all medications agree with everyone's body system, so some people experience more side effects than others.
In this case, you should follow your internists advice and try a different antibiotic. There are many others on the market that are just as effective as Amoxicillin.

Have you discussed this with your dentist?
This is interesting, I had double knee replacement last september and have been to the dentist twice since then. I also took amoxicillin before my appts. The first time I came down with a very high fever and chills the same evening as my appt. I just went to the dentist yesterday, like you said about 8 hours after taking amoxicillan, I have flu like symptoms, ache all over, headache, had very little sleep last night and achy eyes. I almost don't want to go to the dentist anymore. I'm hoping it won't last more than a day. I'm not happy that you are going through this, but it's nice to know that it isn't just me going through this.
Your reply is the 2nd I have received. I have discussed this with both my internist and dentist. They both said to try a different antibiotic next time or possibly taking acidophilus prior to taking the amoxicillin. Two months ago, I began taking Florajen-3 and saw a general improvement with my digestive system. I need to get a prescription prior to my next dental exam in October. I will ask my surgeon to prescribe a different antibiotic.
When I first had the knee replacement, the instructions for needing antibiotic prior to dental work would be for 2 years. Now I have learned that it will be for my lifetime.
I contacted my dentist today and was told that they would prescribe a different type of antibiotic for next time. I also have been told I would be doing this for the rest of my life. I will be seeing my surgeon in september and talk to him about it as well. Thank you for your reply. I have been taking prebiotics and probiotics for quite a few months now, but I haven't seen that it has made a difference for me. Although the way I am feeling has nothing to do with my digestive system, it's just the feeling of feeling rundown and achy all over.
Sorry you haven't had any relief. I will try a new antibiotic for my October appointment. I hope we can report that is the answer to this problem. Good luck.
I've had basically these same symptoms for years after dental appointments ever since I started taking amoxicillin. The head and eye pain starts about 6 to 8 hours after the appointment and I can feel ill with flu-like symptoms for days. Haven't been able to find any info concerning this until finding this post. Did you try a different antibiotic? Did it make a difference?
THanks!
I am so glad to see these posts. I am just going to call my surgeon. I had very successful total knee replacement in March of 2013. I need to have my teeth cleaned every four months. So far, after taking the 4 capsules of amoxycillin, later that evening I have had incredible flu symptoms -- feverish, chills, body aches, then the night sweats. The first time, I thought I really did have the flu, although I seemed to feel pretty much OK the next day. However, just two days ago, it happened again so it's not a coincidence. I have taken that particular antibiotic many times and have no known allergy but perhaps it's just taking that huge slug of it all at once that makes the difference. Anyway, I figure there are a lot of alternatives so I will seek something else -- it's just good to have confirmation that I'm not loopy!
I just got my wisdom teeth pulled and was prescribed amoxycilin for the healing. Within 12 hours of taking it, I began to have some discomfort in my stomach and felt a little dizzy. Within 48 hours of taking it, I felt like I was coming down with the flu. I began to question whether it was the antibiotic when I noticed that the flu like symptoms got worse about an hour after I took each dose. Last night was like he'll. I had heavy heart beat, sweat, anxiety, and stomach pains. Today, I felt so ill I couldn't eat, so I didn't take my morning dose of amoxycilin, interestingly enough I have begun to feel better and it's only noon. Now I am afraid if I take my next dose, I will feel sick again. I wish I knew what other antibiotics the dentist could prescribe instead of this. Any ideas?
My boyfriend had total knee and has to take amoxicillin,,in now for dental cleanings.he just came home from dentist and is experiencing flu like symptoms. Same fifth the fever and red eyes. This happened last time at dentist too. Horrible
I had my teeth cleaned yesterday & the dentist gave me 4 capsules of amoxicillin to premedicate because of bilateral knee replacements. By the time I got home from the appt, I was so sleepy & felt like I was getting sick with stomach pains & I felt so hot. I slept most of the rest of the day & has to cancel 2 md apps the following day because I felt too ill to even drive. I was so glad to see that other people had the same reaction to this intense dosing of the amoxicillin by the dentist!
i went to the dentist yesterday for a cleaning. They gave me 4 amoxicillins. I had total knee replacement in JUNE 1915. I have a couple of issues that need to be fixed. Maybe 1 or 2 crowns & a root canal.. I have a wide area of infections. Last night after dinner I got terrible stomach pains like the kind you get from diarrhea. It was hours before I got any relief. And now at 3 am I have bright red blood & clots coming from the rectum. Tam very concerned.

I was prescribed Amoxicillin before a root canal. I became very ill with flu-like symptoms: headaches, severe chills, night sweats and body aches. I could not rest at night . After coffee in the morning, I was fine. Every evening symptoms began again. Stopped amoxicillin and flu symptoms ended but I still feel very weak and exhausted. Spoke with pharmacist and she says these are not side effects of this drug. After reading the comments here, I believe she is wrong!
Wow!! I was so relieved to see this!! Over the summer, I had a dental procedure done which I was put on amoxicillin for afterwards. By the second day of the antibiotic, I had chills and body aches all over. By day three and on I started running a fever with blood shot eyes and thought for sure I had the flu. I managed to make myself a doctor's appointment which I barely made it to I felt so bad. I was negative for flu. I ended up running a fever between 99.9 and 102.0 for 17 straight days. The docs never could figure it out but i was told to stop taking the amoxicillin because it obviously wasn't working. Once that stopped, so did the fever.
All three of my kids just got over strep throat. I started feeling horrible shortly after which the doc said I wasn't positive for strep yet, but put me on amoxicillin to knock it out. Once again, by day two, I was aching all over again and this time feeling as though my temp would be upwards of 102.0 and unbelievable night sweats. I never noticed this drug doing this to me when I was younger. I'm 32 now...and I've come to the realization that amoxicillin and I don't mix! Thank you for this post!!
Kacey, My doctor immediately realized that I had Serum Sickness as a result of taking the Amoxicillin. My liver and kidneys have been damaged and I am extremely weak and continue to feel horrible. My doctor says it will take a long time for my body to recover. Once you have this reaction, you should never take amoxicillin again because the next time the reaction will be worse. Why aren't these symptoms listed on the side effects that accompany the medication? I too am so glad I found this blog. More people need to know.
I am actually thankful for your post because at age 74, this and more happens to me and I was having trouble believing this could happen. (I have to take it due to hip replacement). It seems to get worse each time. My stomach acts up, my mouth acts up, I'm exhausted and feel sick in general and no appetite. All I can think is try a different antibiotic. I'm going to discuss it with my physician. I do know the jury is out as to whether we should or should not take antibiotics just for hygiene dental visits. At least I know I'm not alone. Best wishes!
Re: Kay (# 11)
If you had your knee replaced in 1915, you are clearly over 150 years old. I wouldn't worry.
