I would like to know of any side effects of Lialda and how the drug compares to Asacol HD?

I have had Crohn's disease for 30 years,(I am 60) with one bowel resection. It has been mild over the last two decades. A colonoscopy last week revealed lesions in large int.I have taken asocal in the past, but could not tolerate it due to severe headaches The doctor now wants me to try Lialda, 4 tablets a day. Lialda has not been FDA approved for Crohn's, only UC. Is this correct? If so it would be "off label" and I don't think insurance would cover it ? Also, since asocal and lialda are essentially the same chemicals, isn't it logical to expect the same side effects? I know that lialda is not absorbed until the large intestine, but the chemicals still will be absorbed into the blood stream. Any information, or link to further solid information would be appreciated.
Thank you for the rsponse. I have taken both and had bad side effects from Asacol HD. I have not had the same side effects from the Lialda. I was wonderingif this is normal?
Lialda contains the active ingredient Mesalazine, a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory, which is most commonly used to treat ulcerative colitis and Crohn's Disease.
It's common side effects may include: nausea, cramping, diarrhea and flatulence.

As to comparing the two medications, they both actually contain the same active ingredient, they are just made by different companies and therefore have different names.
Are there any other questions or comments?
