Yes, unfortunately these class of medications (anti-psychotics) do carry the side effect of weight gain. These meds actually slow down your metabolism causing weight gain. If you are using it for sleep which is what a lot of us are prescribing it for, so as to not get you hooked on sleeping pills. These meds side effect of sleepiness is why we use this even if you're not psychotic. Try breaking one in half with a knife and try using just half. Whatever you do if you are taking them every night you DO NOT stop taking this medication before speaking with your doctor first.

Abrubt stopping of these meds could cause seizures and other problems you will have to be titraited from the drug if you so choose. It is a good drug for occasional insomnia, but if you are having issues with sleep you should really have this followed up on. Sleeping is like breathing we have to do it everyday. If sleep is a challenge for you there could be an underlying situation and this could be a symptom.

Talk with your doctor and explain what is happening. When older doctors went to school there were only three pages on sleep. Now these days sleep is included in every doctors rotation and they are more familiar with sleep issues. Whatever you do... Don't stop taking this drug if you use it often without consulting your doctor.

I hope this helps you.
