Ramipril & Amlodipine (Top voted first)
UpdatedI have had high BP for some time, treated with 10 mg Ramipril. The readings have always remained on the high side. Today the GP has prescribed 5mg Amlodipine to be taken in combination with Ramipril. Does anyone have any personal experience of this? Reading the side effects of Amlodipine seems a bit scary.

If taking Amlodopine and Rampiril, is it best to take one in the morning and one in the evening? and which way round?
Many thanks.
Amlodipine is a calcium channel blocker and it has about the same risk of causing side effects as the Ramipril that you're already taking.
However, the most important fact of relevance is that it's far more dangerous to let your blood pressure remain high than any possible side effects you may experience from a medication. Letting it remain high risks damage to your heart, which may be permanent, it also creates the risk of stroke, heart attack, congestive heart failure and other cardiac dangers.

As to the side effect of the Amlodipine, it really depends on you and how sensitive you are to medications. Many people manage to take it without a problem, but I am an example of someone sensitive to medications, so I had to stop taking it and switch to something else.
Thus, if you are sensitive to them and their side effects, you may want to talk to your doctor about trying a different medication. There are many others on the market that can be used instead.
However, if you don't usually have a problem with them, then it is probably worth trying to see if it works well for you.
Is there anything else I can help with?
I monitor my blood pressure at home and am on 5mgs amlodipine and 10 ramapril for 20 or more yrs. my pressure is 135/85..I stopped taking my meds for 5 days and my a be without any meds is 140/85...what is going on? Either I do have high blood pressure and the meds do very little or I don't have high pressure and that's why they are ruffly the same with or without..what is the best thing for me to do?
Based on my research, there aren't any drug interactions listed between these two medications. So you should be safe in that regard. As far as side effects go, that's unfortunately one of the perks of taking any prescription medication. If you want to avoid most side effects I'd encourage you to go the natural route. There are many natural alternatives for lowering blood pressure that in my opinion can be just as, if not more effective than prescription medication if taken seriously.
I used to have high BP for years in the range of 150/90, but was able to control it by controlling my eating habits and exercising. Now it is consistently around 120/75. What works for me may not work for everyone, but my initial advice is to cut out all processed foods (especially those high in sodium and other ingredients that are hard to pronounce). This alone should help reduce inflammation and water retention.
In general, eating whole foods that have little to no sodium and which are high in potassium and magnesium are solid dietary options for lowering blood pressure. These foods primarily include fresh fruits and vegetables. Bananas and dates in particular are great for this, among many others!
Other dietary and non dietary options for lowering blood pressure can include:
Coenzyme Q10
Garlic
Hawthorn
Folic acid
Yoga
Meditating daily
Autogenic training
Aerobic exercise
Ayurvedic medicine
Various essential oils (such as lavender)
I hope this helps! :)
Re: David (# 2)
A YEAR AGO MY BP WAS RUNNING AT 143/89. I WAS 79 YEARS OLD AND HAD ALREADY HAD A 5-WAY BYPASS IN 2002. MY BLOOD SUGAR WAS OFF THE CHARTS. I TAKE RAMAPRIL ANDAMLODIPINE AT 75MG AND10MG RESPECTIVELY. SO, I WAS PUT ON A HIGH PROTEIN DIET, AND ADDED ONE MILE PERE DAY WITH DOG TO MY EXERCISE PROGRAM. IN THREE MONTH MY BP WAS ABD IS DOWN TO 120/72, MY BLOOD SUGAR WAS 6.5 AND I LOST 35 POUNDS. T WAS NOT UNTIL I ADDED THE O NE MILE OF EXERCISE THAT ANYTHING HAPPENED VIA THE MEDICATIONS, WHICH NOW INCLUDED METFORMIN 3000 MG PER DAY. I AM OFF THE METFORMIN AND MY SUGAR IS HOLDING, MY BP IS STILL DOWN AND I FEEL MUCH BETTER. IT APPEARS THAT RELIANCE ON MEDICATIONS WITHOTU THE EXERCISE IS A WASTE OF TIME. YOU HAVE TO GET THAT BLOOD MOVING AND YOUR HEART BEATING
OR THE MEDS WILL ONLY PARTLY DO A JOB --- AT BEST
Thanks very much

I'm the same. Been on Ramipril 10mg for over 3 years my blood pressure is still high as in hypertension sage 2. Got amolodipine 5mg today. I've always eat fruit, hate salty, fried foods and I work in a warehouse. I do smoke and drink sometimes but I look after my elderly parents so I think stress may be involved?
I have raynauards / scleroderma / copd / pad and had two angioplasty's this year, and 214/1114 was my last body reading.
I was on ramipril for my blood pressure and it seemed to stop working. My doctor then switched me to amlodipine and it did bring the BP down, but now I'm having trouble with swelling legs and ankles, and tingling muscles in my legs. I also feel tired all the time and experienced weight gain. Is it safe to switch back to see if the ramipril will work?
I am taking amlopidine 5mg.I chose that channel blocker because some of the others slow my heart rate excessively. It is effective for me without side effects
Hello all. I’m taking 3 medications for high blood pressure: Amlodipine 10mg, Ramipril 10mg and Bisoprolol 2.5mg. I'm very worried as I am just 31. My doctors just kept on increasing the dose. Now my blood pressure is also okay. I was recently diagnosed sleep apnea too and I’m on cpap therapy. But my real concern is the high dose of these three medications. I spoke with my GP and he told me to continue with the 3 tablets. I’m very worried. Any suggestions?
